We finally got some decent rain. It's time to start the third cutting, and the sprigged field gets cut for the first time this season.

I recently was in the area on a business trip and got to meet Scott and Kim. You can tell by the videos and even more so in person what kind of people they are...GREAT! Scott took the time to carry me around the farm talking hay. As a hay grower from Alabama, that had to be the best quality hay I have ever laid eyes on. By the videos you can tell that Scott is his own worst critic. I got to see his new sprigged field. It looks great! I wouldn't even think of rolling it. Keep up the awesome videos!

Talk about warm weather maybe into October, went to the Alaska State Fair today, Aug 26. 50 degrees, breezy and rain, by Labor day, were suppose to have lows of 36 and daytimes in the 50's. By mid September the mountains peaks will be covered in snow or Termination Dust, terminating summer!

You can expect to have weeds and grab grass in any new field until it grows thicker and crowds out the weeds and crab grass. It usually takes several years for it to get thick enough to keep the noxious stuff down. Goat grass is one of the weeds I hate in my yard.

What determines if you square bale or round? And what is the difference in the product? Thanks in advance for the education. I appreciate you guys taking the time to make your videos.

Good is 80 and bad is 30. First cut is the least yielding, second and third cut swap depending on weather, and the fourth cut is usually the third best

Her: "We've got a lot going on in the next week." Him: "We do?" Haha, love that response; I feel like that's typical for married couples! Hey Scott, do have a question for you. Do you spray anything to control the foxtails and what do you spray, if so. We have a ton of foxtails that come on in August. I don't think they necessarily hurt the hay but I know they don't help. Just curious. They are thick this year.
@NorthTexasHay5 жыл бұрын
They are bad this year. The only thing that can post control is msma and our overlords won't let us use it anymore. I'm possibly going to try a pre emergent in May to try and stop them next year
@OSUOiler5 жыл бұрын
That sounds good, let me know which pre-emergent you try using. That gives me another question, as well; do you have much issue with Johnson grass? That's another one we fight, and much like you said, MSMA is one of the few herbicides I know of that'll get it. If we don't keep a field grazed out it'll take over our Bermuda within a few years. I hate it.

Stupid questions time: (1) what kind of grass you grow again, and (2) you have 3 tractors - 2wd NH for cutting & tedding, 4wd NH for loader work, & 4wd JD for baling? I forget ... too much work, too long of hours, getting too old
@NorthTexasHay5 жыл бұрын
I have Coastal and Jiggs Bermuda. 3 tractors but the only set jobs each has is the 2 wheel always sprays, the Deere always bales, and the 4 wheel new holland always moves the hay.

What does it take to decide whether or not a t-shirt has seen its better days? When your hay quality is better than your t-shirt quality, it might be time to discard it!
