Non-diver here. I’ve accidentally “killed” three watches swimming that said they were water resistant but proved not to be. I’m glad to see people like yourself testing the real-world water resistance of the Apple Ultra. After I see dive tests going well with the Ultra, it makes me feel more comfortable with the water rating of the watch being genuine. Good video too. 😊👍

Hi Coby, I am all for Apple Watch when it comes to this! I bought an Apple Watch series 2 when it was launched in 2016 and wore it to swimming competitively for two years, never had any problems. I continued to wear it almost everytime until it just died at 6 years old a few weeks ago because I accidentally put it in the dryer with my coat pocket, thankfully it did not explode. Ever since Apple Watch Series 2, swimming is absolutely no problem. The built-in swim tracking feature is getting better and better too. I have a couple of swimmer friends who can testify as well. The latest software update also added the ability to track partial stokes, like if you are only working on flutter kicks and your arms are not moving at all. AMAZING. And as a diver, thanks Steve for this first dive, can't wait for the compatible App! Also can't wait for a vacation to go diving again.

@@TheRealJamesWu I’m glad to hear this. Naturally most manufacturers suggest that watches are waterproof if services regularly which begs the question in my mind, how long could an Apple watch like the Ultra be waterproof? At least it is probably the “most” waterproof Apple series watch. (Waterproof also being good for dirt and sand resistance) 😊

There is videos on KZbin where they push the Ultra way over its dive depth limit and it worked absolutely fine. I’m betting it could go to 200ft with ease. Apple seem to be cautious when giving its recommendations on battery life and dive depth.

The screen goes into wet mode, so it's useless underwater or on the surface, The buttons can only be set for quick access to another app - which of course, all rely on the screen being dry to use. So, all that to say, buttons offer no benefit.

I do a lot of open water lake swimming. Now that the weather is getting colder I need to start wearing a wetsuit with gloves and boots (water temp is typically 5-10 degrees). I bought the Apple Watch Ultra for added safety and to track swims, hikes, bikes, scuba/free dives and ski days mostly. I'm finding the Workout Open Water Swim mode utterly useless when the watch is on top of any clothing or fabric like the wetsuit. I have splurged on the extra long band to accommodate wetsuits for swimming and scuba diving too. If it can't sense my skin, the password prompt keeps coming up, it won't show me live stats of the workout and it it won't track the workout. Is there a mode I'm not aware of, or a way around this? #apple please read this and update your software!

Thanks Steve, love this, please keep us diver updated on this, as new features gets added. My first thought at the announcement was the sensors wouldn't work if I am wearing it outside of a wetsuit, or even a drysuit. But I guess what's exciting is also the expandability of it: the newer suunto computers just had the add-on tank pressure sensor a few years ago. I wonder what kind of diving accessories can be used in conjunction with the Ultra? Blood pressure sensor? Body temperature sensor? Heart rate sensor? All can be wore seperately and connects to the Watch wirelessly. Think of the implications of this when it comes to diving safety, and the ability to further study what happens to our body when diving, for health science research? It's really amazing, and hopefully third-party developer can get on with it and make it a health competition.

@@eyezinstein9168 Very true, although the lower frequency that Apple Watch Ultra support is the 13.56Mhz band, which is for NFC, and is sufficient for about half a meter, which is enough for pretty much everything we wear underwater. The Suunto Oy Diving tank pressure sensor operates at 123khz, which is much better, but the thing is half of the price of an Apple Water Ultra for just a sensor.
