In 1967 when Kenny Rogers sang this song I had no idea what psychedelic sound was all about. Asked my brother who is 10 yrs older than me what this song was all about. "Nothing you want to know about", he said to me. Wow! Jimi Hendrix of all people had said this was his favorite song. Kenny looked so hip. Heck, later on Kenny said he had no idea what the song was all about when they sang it. Groov-y man!

The First Edition: From left to right: Mike Settle (vocals and acoustic guitar), Mary Arnold (vocals and tambourine), Kenny Rodgers (lead vocal and bass guitar), Terry Williams (vocals and lead guitar) and Mickey Jones (drums)
@t-mar92754 ай бұрын
That's not Mary Arnold but her predecessor, Thelma Camacho. The video was shot for "From The Bitter End", a television show originating from The Bitter End club in NYC. There are two other extant performances from this particular show, "I was A Loser" and "I Get a Funny Feeling". All three songs are from the first album. The performance appears to be from some time in early 1968.

Those have to be the most unmistakable bricks next to maybe the Comedy Store. Also, it's cool to see a completely live performance since a lot of Bitter End videos I've seen are sung to tracks, plus I don't know what cameras they used there (videotape, obviously, but beyond that) but most things taped there look like they could have been done yesterday. A clean immediacy with little of the vidicon light trails or halo effects associated with concert films of the 60s/70s. What a tight band the First Edition were, too, and played their TV appearances live most of the time, too. I agree the acoustics and/or mix here aren't deserving of the performance; there is another performance of this from '72 on here that's also live but sounds much better and well-balanced. The one with Jones and the drums at the middle forefront and the rest of the band placed surrounding him on risers.
