Love your channel & nice to see someone in your generation looking back into the roots of Rock. I started playing professionally at age 17, on an Air force base outside Madrid Spain. Luckily the play I played & sang the male lead. West side story. The female lead singer who was headed back Stateside with her husband. What a great voice she had. I only wished I'd had more time to sing & play with her. A siulful Linda Rhonstadt & mix of Martha & the Vandrells the original Mowtown singers of 'Heatwave' She stayed after the last performance, I was lucky that the Drama teacher had so many requests, he added another weekend of Fri & Sat performances. Being the last show. She had to wait a while. She conpkinented me & said I should show up the following Friday night for a live audition at tye NCO Club. I did of course a chance to join a band that'd played for a decade, repkacing whinever they needed to. They were all about a decade older then me. But I'd had Music theory, Strings, Chorus. Drama, Speech, Composition & Electronics my Sr year. 1st lucky that my school had so many fine arts classes & I got the role cuz I had a 4 octave vocal range, only that year of Drama. I chose my song which I was set to sing it in the 3rd set, but they hired me before I sang it cuz I'd been harmonizing above her vocals. Once they found out I also played guitar, they setup a practice the next Tuesday & the only Spanish guy in the band was a studio bass player l. But loved American Top 40, he also played guitar. He said he'd be happy to share lead & rhythm with me. Very rare with musicians, if they don't have an ego the size of Montana, they've got a drinking or drugs issue. A drink or 2 man or a toke or 2, that's fine. With many it helps calm the nerves & while playing ignore the crowd, & relate to them in between songs. The drummer was a disc jockey for AFRTS, until when General Westmoreland visited the base in Vietnam he was stationed Soon as the General stepoed off his plane Kurt played Warpigs from Black Sabbath and cranked up the volume at the Station which pkayed loudly on the flight line. Needless to say it went over like a fart in church~. Almost git him court marshalled, instead he was shifted to behind the scene & eventually to the TV portion. So I certainly didn't need to do much taking, songing 60 to 70% of the songs & harmonizing the others I needed to rest my voice. Within a month I was learning all the new Top 40 & writing 3 & 4 part harmonies & on songs I wrote Javiar played bass on. That was my start in 1975. After stage 3 Melanoma, 6 injections a week for a year, that I mixed & injected myself with Interferon. 2 severe rear end collisions 50÷ mph & 3 work injuries, I had 3 nad discs CV in my meck & another in my low err r back (beltline) where no disc was left. I've been disabled since 1995. I'd fronted a Classic rock, Top 40 & variety band & opened for the Gatlin brothers at Scottsdale's Giants stadium for spring training. A crowd just shy of 10,000. We went on 1st & took 3 songs which had a 50's or 60's version & played either the 70's or 80's version, we atarted with the older & ended with the new. Sonething for everyone & ended with 'Some kinda Wonderful' itself a 50's remake by Grand Funk & lastly Closer to home. We couls use tgeir amps, but couldn't change any knobs, with so many changes, since I was lead guitarist I had to lug my 200 watt per side stereo amp with 2 15" s in them & I took the wrong exit. The Gatlins came out early to tell us we did a great job of getting the crowd up & moving & complimented my voice. Very close to Mark Farner's of Grand Funk, with a bit of Uriah Heep & Glen Campbell which sounds like an odd mix but Glen played all styles. In 1966 alone he played guitar for over 600 hits for Capital records. Sorry for the long intro, but I've always had a wide range of music I enjoyed, but I'm a huge Grand Funk, mostly Mark Farner after the drummer & bass player screwed him over, just when his 21 year old son had a horrific fall & broke his neck & was paralyzed fron the neck down. Mark's dates went from 60 a year to 20 cuz of just part of his high school buddy the drummer did to him. Mark wrote over 90% of Hrand Funk's music. 3 Doors down, the Who, & several new bands that were introduced by either Mark's singing or guitar playing. And 70's musicians that knew Mark. A down to earth loving man. He's forgiven the Drumnet & bass player, but they refuse to tour as Grand Funk which the did for 3 years 97 to 99. After partying that's when Don tricked Mark into signing nothing near what he was told. Mark's dad died when he was 9 & he never graduated high school & Don's a lawyer. There's a movie of their Shea stadium concert which with the exact same way to buy tickets, took the Beatles 2 weeks, Grand Funk 72 hours, a record that stands today. There's also a video with Paul Shafer from David Letterman's band leader, directing the Detroit symphony backing up Grand Funk's 2nd set. But Don won't release them cuz Mark's the frontman~ the latter was supoosed to go to the children of Bosnia from the Detroit, New York & L.A. performances with a different special guest & conductor. I saw the L.A. show I forget the venue but it's cut into a mountain where the audience is surrounded by the sound. Goisebumps on my goosebumps! Mark still plays at 72 & sings in the same key. Checkout Mark Farner's American band in Santiago Chile 2017, 18 & 19. He's got James Brown's last drummer & alsio a black bass player. Mark's music has always had rythm & Funk to it. They speak many languages in Chile & they know his songs & Lyrics from 69 to 75, just like Russia & Japan. He's always been big there, with Grand Funk or himself. Here's tge story behind Closer to Home. Mark's 2nd wife of 40 years, knows to collect naokins, loose papers etc. Cuz Mark's always writing. He usually starts jamming till he feels a groove & later writes the lyrics that fit. Not with Closer to home. It was during Vietnam & after his prayers he put a ps on it. Asking God to give him a song, that'd reach out & touch the hearts that God felt needed it most. As he sat on his farm in upper Michigan, drinking his coffee & strumming his acoustic guitar & came up with the opening run & chords & played the C in a way he'd never done before & had the main rhythm guitar part. Then he remembered writing words when he woje up in the middle of the night & Closer to home was born. Mark's the kind of man who will stay till everyone whose bought any of his 100% American made items down to a $5 8 by 10 & will autograph & pose with them for a picture. For years every Vietnam vet told him that Closer to home always got them feeling better & 'closer to home. When they had the 25 year anniversary of the Vietnam memorial wall. They sent out emails & snail mail asking among other questions, what song helped them when they were down & needed it. By a landslide Closer to home was the song. They asked Mark, since he's always helped the troops from Funk till now, to come & play it acoustic. He said I'll do better a pay for my band to come & give a free concert the troops & their families. He played over 2 hours, with his full setup. Nothing but the max for the troops & since he's part Indian he plays a lot of Indian Casino's. He was given a Chief's ceremonial blanket, by the Lakota tribe ( South Dakota by the Black Hills & Mt Rushmore, which brought tears to his eyes. A few songs to look for Creepin, Loneliness, The Railroad, People let's stop the war. Sone of Mark's solo Isn't it amazing(what a prayer can do), a Christian song he sang & came in 2nd to Amy Grant for a Dove award. It was my Montra fighting for my life. My son's were 9 & 12 & my ex-wife of 35 years was making $8 an hour, which wouldn't have covered the house payment. No way I wasn't going to beat it. I went from 175 pounds working on construction sites for 7 years in the Phoenix Valley desert, installing the huge Satellites and TV systems before networks started scrambling their signals, but I didn't have more than 5 lbs of fat, which I was supposed to inject the Interferon into a fat pad~ went down as low as 120 lbs @ 5'10". After my 5 year follow-up my Dr's said not one of them expected me to survive. I list my oldest son in 2017, the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with. Tears in heaven truly huts home. I now play guitar & guitar synthesizer, keyboards, bass & drums & have my own home studio where I use computers, but in an analogue manor. Soon as my house refinance goes through I'll make a donation on Patreon & give you a few great Uriah heep songs to check out & a few female singers & musicians to check out. Keep up the great work. Just getting ready to checkout your live Guitar playing. Thanks Ric Cottrell

Saw an interview with Mark Farner in which he said that the band had been touring hard and he was physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted. He wrote this song as a plea to return to his faith for strength. The Captain is God; the stranger is Satan. Getting closer to home is getting his faith back.

This came out in the early-mid 70's when I was a part of the US Navy. This was huge for us sailors in the nightclubs in Naples, Italy. Bands from all over Europe would play there. This song seemed to be on a lot of their music lists since we were in port. Memories beyond believe.
@armadillotoe4 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to take this song. I take the 1st part mostly literally. A Captain took his ship too far out, and the crew was about to mutiny. The Captain gets sick, and death is the stranger with hands around his throat. In death, he is finally going home.

Thank god that there are some of you young 'uns coming around to the BEST ROCK MUSIC ever made. 1965-1980. I again didn't read all 228 comments so if I am repeating, I'm sorry.. Mark (of course) wrote this song and it along with a few others Riders on the Storm (Doors), Take Me Away (BOC) several others always gives me goosebumps. Mark has stated that this song is referenced as being the unofficial anthem of the Vietnam War. He has received hundreds (yes) hundreds of comments from VN vets telling him this song helped them get through their time over there. He says he is very proud of it and it is his favorite of all he has written. There are some good bands today, but you have to look far and wide. Check out Seether, Veruca Salt, the Smithereens, Greta van Fleet, et al. EVERY one I know did the same thing you did when Closer to Home starts.... the head stops head banging, the face clears and the eyes close........ I always understood it to mean; that the captain 'getting closer to home, means he is dying'. Are you hearing how much his vocals are integral to the song? And ya know, the time signature changes shouldn't work, but they do... When I saw HIM do this the audience were on their feet with the first few strains of the song and never sat down. He had a standing ovation at the end, and we didn't want to stop clapping. I think you should also listen to Bad Time; another Mark song. It is based on the ending of his first marriage to Sherry; as he says 'I picked a bad time to be in love.".. It's a great song. They have so many that are. And while I am livid with Don, American Band is his and it is great as well, so is Shinin' On. I QUOTE this from Wiki: Decades later, "I'm Your Captain" remains a staple of many classic rock radio stations. It is considered to be the standout track on the album, and considered by both Farner and others to be his best work as a songwriter. With its melodic strengths and dramatic feel, it is often considered one of the best rock songs of all time. ...they had no ending for the second movement. Inspired by groups like The Moody Blues, they came upon the idea of using an orchestra,...

Oh,, and yes, Mark Farner is a Christian! "Farner became a born again Christian in the late 1980s and enjoyed success with the John Beland composition "Isn't it Amazing", which earned him a Dove Award nomination and reached No. 2 on the Contemporary Christian music charts." There are some interviews with him on the tubeyou where he talks about being a Christian!

I was in the Army in the 1970s, stationed in Germany. I'd go into the Rec Rooms of my Battalion (it was all male, females were separate) where we women were allowed and two songs would be blaring out. This and their "American Band". Amazing group.

From Grand Funk, it is about a mutiny. The captain has been poisoned but the poison is not working fast enough so the crew has someone trying to strangle the captain (the hand tightening around his throat). Closer to home is the captain's dying moments as he leaves his body for his "home" in the next world. My junior high offered guitar classes and this was a song we learned to play... 9th grade, 1969.

there is something about Grand Funk that should be mentioned, in 1970 or 71 my friends and I bought tickets to see Grand Funk at the Circus Krone in Munich and just before the concert Mark Farner canceled the event, we went back to the Circus Krone and received our refund and they explained that the concert was to be put on for free at an open air venue on a military base. all this was set up by Mark and if that wasn't selfless enough of Grand Funk because this dime was on them the opening group was Humble Pie. Thank you to Mark and the band, it was great fun and I will never forget that night.

This song was a favorite among Viet Nam vets because it was often played over the loudspeakers on the voyage home. I have heard stories of war weary soldiers singing "I'm getting closer to my home" with tears in their eyes. FM disc jockeys liked it because it gave them a chance to have a cigarette and use the bathroom during their on air shift without having to wait for the next newscast.

Your Dad was right. In Cobo hall Detroit, this band all were grom the city of Flint Michigan, where one of the largest & oldest car manufacturers Fisher Bodies, which went on GM cars. During WWII & Vietnam wars, the 1st they converted to building just tanks. A coincidence, the singer, guitarist, harmonice, Hammond B3 organ & an entire timbali sp? Drumset, where he & the drummer would pkay off each other. He wrote over 90% of their material, & in 99 after a reunion tour of 3 years, in it's full tour was one of the 100 top grossing tours on 1999 or 2000. Since they hadn't had all 3 members reunited since 76 when the drummer walked in late to practice to quit. Reality is his ego couldn't handle Farner being the front man. He's a damn good drumner & for riugh gritty songs his lead vocals were good. Nowhere near Mark's ranhlge, at 71 he was still touring & is huge in Chile & other Latin countries they knew he's the heart & soul of GFR. While partying which Mark a Non church going Christian, didn't do hardly at all. Whether he wtill smokes pot who cares. He's had 3 solo rock And Roll albums 77 & 77 Just titled Mark Farner & the album name on the 2ndm The last around 2002 'For the people' mainly his fans. The drug whose either a lawyer or close to it. Told him he was protecting the band. They were from the same High school & in reality it allowed the other 2 founding members stripped him of his voting rights in the Corporation. Mark 1st said it's not fair for me to abandon my group. But for the fans I'll do 2 years, when in fact he gave them 3 & the drummer & bassist recorded 2 albums after the breakup with guest guitarist, Columbia after thev2nd album was recorded & ready to be sold, said thanks but no thanks. While Mark in the 1st 2 the guy that signed him was fired the day he started work on the 2 albums, not cuz of Mark. But he was the one at Columbia, that'd made sure it was advertised & promoted. He got great critic reviews, which due to their 1st manager was an egomaniac, who everyone had to talk to him & they thought it was GFR's idea, 2 of them when signed to Capitol, which eventually gave them their oelwn label. I don't think anyone else ever got that. As of now they've sold over 40 million copies of the original 69 to 76 albums, the last prduced by Frank Zappa, who was a musical genious, far ahead of his time & strange but totally straight, except he drank several huge pots of coffee. But he had to respect them to produse 'Good Singing Good playing, Zappa's idea, so that's high praise for him. The Cobo hall incident GFR was playing & the crowd was going apeshit! Led Zeppelin's manager was an ex wrestler 6'5 or 9" close to 300 poinds told GFR's manager to cut the sound. He didn't & he came back reached out and picked him up by his shirt collar & said "I told you to turn it down" Someone had a mike long enough to say we gotta quit Led Zeppelin's too scaree to follow us, we've gotta quit now & probably won't be opening for Zepoelin anymore. The crowd went apeshit ripped seats up & threw them after GFR got their stuff off the stage. They were never the opening band. Unless itvwas a big festival. Their shows sold out everywhere & even in Japan, the got ahold of a telephone pole and a buncg used it to pound against the part of the stadium (baseball) and they got into the sold out concert. In Japan unheard of. Mark's 20 year old son fell & broke his neck & his 'friends" waited 11 hours to take him to bvn a hospital & Grand Funk was suing him that if he printed formerly of Grand Funk Railroad, he had to also hiblve an injunction. Mark never finished school, his Dad dies when he was 9. His Mother was the 1st woman welder at the Flint pkant when it was converted in WWII for tanks. He prayed for a song that'd reach out & touch the hearts of those God felt needed it most & the song, Closer to home. When their CD'S were remixed they added I'm your Captain cuz many fans knew it as that. But every Vietnam Vet who buys any of his 100 % American made products, he'll stay until the line ends, will take pics with people, he's a very down to earth man. To even at 1/4 the size of Mark Farner, he was forced to give an injunction which required the hiring of a lawyer. It took a while but Mark outsmarted them as far as touring. He now advertises as Mark Farner's American band. Which Mark wrote the music, just like every other Farner Brewer song, but Don asked for full credit & Mark gave it. Mark's a Christian he doesn't feel he needs a preacher to talk to God & sciptor says owe no man. So he doesn't believe in giving money to a church. He's big on helpngvthose who need it, but he does that cuz of the man he is. He did 3 released Christian tmrock records (CDS) but many preachers wouldn't let him perform in their churches either cuz of his long hair. Mark's proud of his Cherokee roits & during the tine hes got a quadriplegic son on life support in Upper Michigan for privacy. A bunch of 70's & 90's bands who credited Mark for getting then into music. As do I. I started as a pro at 17 in Spain, and once I felt I'd raised to great young men. I started playing weekends & worked all thevway to opening for Fat's Domino & with a classic rock band for thevCounyry Gatlin brothers, which not long after I began a lifelong battle with Fibromyalgia, stage 3 Melanoma, an area 4cm's by 6 cm's removed from the base of my neck & the general surgeon proclaimed me dead soon & used a cauterizer to burn 5 figure 8's to close the wound. 1 in my neck & 2 in my back & right shoulder where my guitar strap hangs. Followed by 6 shots a week I injected Interferon into me for a year. 12 shots over 3 months is the largrst dose given now, so I've been disabled ever since. The Vietnam vets all tell him that at their lowest they'd play Closer to home & it saved their lives. At the 40 or 50th anniversary of the Vietnam wall. They sent out fliers to all known Vietnam vets & asked for their favorite song. Closer to home won by a mile. They asked Mark to come & play it, he asked what if I fly out my band at my cost & give a free concert at the end of your celebration, which that gladly said yes & they played for 2 hours. Mark has done shows in Chile 2017 to 2019 at 70 to 71 he still sings in the same key & idls all over that stage. Midway through the 2019 cellphone recording they play People lets stop the war, a great jam song I come tumblin & Inside looking out. For almost 20 years he's had James Brown's last drummer, both his drummer & bass players have been black, which fits perfectly with Mark's material. It's who they are & how they play that's why Mark plays wity them. He's always offered at the yearly Corporate meetings which he can attend, he just doesn't have any vote. One person offered 20 million dollars for a year long tour, the others who hired an old Kiss guitarist & another one from 38 special, Don's precious ego can't allow it. He even tried to sue Mark for using American band, Mark uses all American instruments, amps etc. They can't say they own those two words. Grand Funk doesn't advertise that Mark Farner isn't wity the band & Mark hets asked why he won't play with them~ He lost his son the same year I lost mine 2017, mine was 35 & it was 5 years after my 35 year marriage was destroyed by my ex's alcoholism, my sister 15 mobths youbger died a year later & last year I lost my father & my baby sister's first born son died exactly like my son. Sitting cross legged on the floor & fell & died before their heads hit. Losing my son. I've got 2, but losing either by a huge amount is tye hardest thing I'll ever face. 28 years plus of pain that no amount of meds will stopz that I'm willing to take, are a cakewalk to losing a son. My only solace is my sons & I never stopped hugging & saying I love you, when eithervof us leftm You never know when that last time will come. I was condemned to die in 1994 & by 1998 that even golfing at a retirement course, where I've played with 90 year olds. With the 3 bad discs in my neck and 1 all gone in my lower, they said I'd be a fool. But it's time ai spent with my sons & ex before 8 bottles of wine & a 12cpack of beer a week minimum in a 3 hour window. Someone just shy of 5', she was a special kind of crazy, but I'd never had quit on her. I made that vow t9 her & God. Mark Farner's 'Isn't it amazing (What a prayer can do) was my montra through cancer & treatment it came in 2nd to Amy Grant for a Dove award. Soon as I get my loan dealt with I plan on requesting a few GFR songs along with many I played. Now with my computer based, but to record in an analogue fashion I play everything. Which I always learned the new top 40 & taught what each band would play of the over 200 I do along with my originals. So I spent a year teaching myself drums, instead of charting each drum. Love what you do, keep it up & soon as the cashola's in my hangds I'll show tge proper support. You're wise beyond your years & I can tell your Dad did his job well. Ric Cottrell

Grand funk is from my hometown of flint Michigan. I was pretty young when they were hitting it big around here. I've met past member keyboardist Craig frost on a few occasions. Super cool guy. He ended up being the keyboardist for Bob seager. My uncle owned a nightclub bar in flint for many years. I guess grand funk used to play there on occasion.

Metaphorical or not I will never forget the indescribable emotions I felt the first time I heard this song. A young Navy man in or on my way to Viet Nam (all I remember is a jukebox in some generic common area) and this came on, I was already a Grand Funk Time Machine era fan but this was so special for a 19 yr old rocker who had been drafted and at sea and getting a couple of hours off the ship somewhere and hearing it that first time on that juke box was indescribably magical.

There's so much great stuff to choose from... Back then the record companies allowed the artists to experiment and be creative. On FM radio, 3:30 songs were the exception, songs were allowed to breath and be fully developed.

Late night FM radio listening was always the best back then ! So many great memories of being with a small group of friends listening to music. Usually either had a black light on or a candle burning with some incense burning as well as some pot or hashish.

A lot of people think it was loosely related to the Mutiny on the Bounty. An old story from the 1700's There is a book and a movie about it.

Thank you so much! When I was creating videos for my old channel I would post on social media constantly, but now with this channel I just haven't had the time for it. Then I'll see some video is getting "likes" on facebook.... I'm very grateful for you and anybody else who enjoys the videos enough to post about it and help e with the media aspect:) Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! This song was just plain awesome.

@@DiconDissectionalReactions You're welcome. I was thinking, I'm also in a Steely Dan fan group so I figured I'd post your first SD reaction (Don't Take Me Alive) on that. DTMA is one of my favorite SD songs. I love the Larry Carlton guitar solo in that.

🌹always loved this song! To me, I take the song rather literally. A mutiny which leaves the captain adrift in a small boat. Perhaps he is still alive as he begs to be returned to his ship. The shift is where I picture his small boat reaching an island and as he dies/or already dead, he feels his soul getting closer to his true home (heaven or the afterlife). Not a sad ending in my mind, but you know this is just my takeaway. ❤️

Great band, my drummer is a big fan, saw Mark Farner, Burton Cummings and BOC at the LA county fairgrounds 2 yrs ago. A sick Captain delirious, thinking his crew are mutinying against him, feels death coming for him.

Yeah Don did screw over Mark. Very sad shit once they broke up. Mark did some Christian Rock which was pretty good. I seen one real reunion and they sounded great. But without Mark Farner it isn’t Grand Funk. I seen them in late 74 or early 75 In Denver (All the Girls in the World Beware) tour. Was a total kick ass concert. Mark was reaching down and taking joints from the crowd then taking huge hits on them. Everyone going nuts then he played Inside Looking Out. Good times and good memories 😎

Great songs your playing , Had my drums set up next to the Stereo, and played along to Grand Funk and many others for hours. Brings back so many memories,all through my early teens when these bands were exploding on to the scene. 1965 to 1978 was the golden age of rock. Trust me you need to check out these songs. Mountain - " Nantucket Sleighride" The Animals -"Sky Pilot" Lou Reed - " Sweet Jane" ( from the live album, Rock n Roll Animal Fleetwood Mac - " Oh Well" James Gang- " Funk 49" Alice Cooper- " Eighteen" Great job your doing! The 70's were the mother lode

Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson Airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson Starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

Being 15 at the time I thought this was one of the coolest. Now,much later I feel like it drags on. Talking to a friend, a music guy he said that a song should never meander. The points should be made and end. I thought about that and agreed,having never thought about music that way. As a friend,and hopefully directing you to some really cool music you must look into early Roxy Music. Bryan Ferry has a crazy distinctive voice. Also music is very dramatic. They are at their best with Viva' Roxy Music. It is live from about 1972. You could go full on album and you feel as if in the front row! Stunning. If not album check "If There is Something! 3 movements, 10:30 time. You crawl in like an old Pink Floyd tune. Enjoy, Ray

I can remember back in the day when I was a young lad, I saw Grand Funk Railroad in concert. They opened up for Black Sabbath and after hearing both bands it was really hard to decide in my mind who I enjoyed most. GFR really knew how to rock on that stage. They were just three guys in a garage band who got real lucky because of their awesome Talent.
@Starriddin4 жыл бұрын
The song is about a mutiny. First, they poisoned him, the feeling sick part, then someone strangled him. The closer to home part is his journey to heaven. Yes, Mark Farner, the guitarist/vocalist is and has been very spiritual. Pretty sure he is a Christian but not 100% sure. During the Vietnam war, many service people loved it for the closer to home part as their tours wound down.

I’ve read several places that this song became a sort of unofficial anthem for the guys returning from Vietnam... that’s not what the song is about but I think of those guys every time I hear this. Imagine listening to this as you board the transport.
