King’s X is a rabbit hole that deserves exploration. One of my favorite bands over the last 30+ years, and I agree with any assessment that declares them criminally underrated.

Now, this song is a true "Banger"! This band is better than most of the "head-banging" bands that dominated the 80s! I can most definitely hear both The Beatles' influence, and Lenny Kravitz' influence!

My favorite hard rock band since 1988. Seen them 4 times met them twice. They have so much talent but MTV only played 3 songs between 1989-1990. It’s Love from their 3rd album,Faith Hope and Love is the second video and it’s hilarious but very complex much more substance in the song. They have 15 studio albums and the 16th is to be released soon date unknown. So many great songs in their catalog. All 3 sing and they wanted to be “The Heavy Metal Beatles”. Nothing they released sucks or is sub par in any way Daniel. Goldilox from their debut, Out Of The Silent Planet is a concert favorite for decades because the band turn their mics toward the audience and they sing the entire song while the band provides the music like massive karaoke. It’s phenomenal to witness the love and dedication the fans have for this trio. It’s amazing they are still together and have outlasted a myriad of bands that were more popular but couldn’t sustain a following and just faded away forever. If you really want some heavy metal experience perhaps play the entire Dogman album produced by Brendan O’Brien in 1994. They played at Woodstock’94 on Friday night and blew half a million minds with their set.
@hansvandermeulen55153 жыл бұрын
I first saw them play in 2007 and they took requests. One of those request was Goldilox. Dug, bassplayer and lead singer thought he would screw up with the lyrics as they hadn't played it in ages so if the audience wants to hear it, the audience has to sing it. About 250 dutchies sang it with all the trimmings, the 2 part harmonies in the chorus. It was so beautiful.... Then I read a review of their next show where they did this as 'audience participation'. They had to stop halfway because the audience wasn't into it enough.

"Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" is a turn out the lights, roll a doobie and experience one of the greatest albums you've never heard (of) kind of album. Helene here.. Strange ending..... I’m an old rocker.....and that was a great straightforward heavy rock vibe and lead singers voice was great.....great lead guitarist.......yet I have NEVER heard of this band. Comment that it was a Christian rock band tells me why Kings X was never really huge, as Christian rock doesn’t get mainstream radio play. But this is going on my playlist.

Daniel: I am just so overjoyed that you finally got to this band. And I can't wait to watch as you discover the hidden treasures of their catalog. Hearing your usual preference for complexity in lyrics as well as intensity in music (my paraphrase), I would suggest Mission, We Were Born To Be Loved, Black Flag, Prisoner, Cigarettes, It's Love, Not Just For The Dead, Goldilox, Summerland or In The New Age next. I haven't commented in a long time but I'm still following your adventures on the channel. This one I had to comment on.

This is actually an old black spiritual sung by slaves. I took an African Music in Dispersion class in college back in the late 90’s and was blown away to see this song listed as one of the songs that was sung by the slaves back in the early US history. I said “Hey!!! I’ve heard this song before!” Interesting Doug says his grandma used to sing…. Gives a little more depth to the song.

If you do King's X I'm going to subscribe!!!!! Thank you! If there was a Hall of Fame for artists that changed the way music sounds that most people have NEVER heard of, King's X would be one of the first 10 inductees. Lotsa bands loved KX, ike Pantera (that moved towards heavy power rock as a result), Soundgarden, even Alice In Chains once joked that they "wait for King's X to put out an album then rip it off" when asked how they developed their sound. They are a really worthwhile band to explore.

At the height of Hair Metal they developed the guitar tone of the 90 s - today ( no credit due) yet none have the tone of guitarist Ty Taybor. Lots of talent in this band and Ty Tabor is really underrated as a guitarist. I’m not ready to put them in the same light as Rush but I do agree they should of been bigger than they were. The Christian rock label, wether true or not, definitely held them back.

At their heaviest I think they have a bit of a Soundgarden sound. (if you know them). Try a song called "Out Of The Silent Planet". It's pretty cool. I’d love to see you react to some of Paul Simon’s solo work! Here is a list of a bunch of Paul Simon songs to choose from (or if you wanted to go down a Simon rabbit hole you could watch them all!) They are in no particular order and honestly they are all equally fantastic. Any one of them could be released as a single and top the charts So here they are : Kodachrome - ( Super catchy guitar, melody, and just an overall happy a mood-lifting track) Still Crazy After All These Years - (Amazingly crafted chord progressions, beautiful melody and soul crushing lyrics about “the one who got away”) 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - (Beautifully written verses and a chorus that will get stuck in your head all day, fantastic drumming on this one too) Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - (just fun and catchy. It’d be very hard to find a person that wouldn’t enjoy this song) Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes - (Beautiful African influenced harmonies and rhythm) You Can Call Me Al - (Lyrically and musically brilliant - I would suggest watching a lyric video over the music video which is a bit distracting and takes away from the song imo) Slip Slidin’ Away - ( catchy, melancholy but yet so relatable) Something So Right - (One of the best love songs ever written imo) Late in the Evening - (Rockin’ and bad ass! Also a fantastic horn section!) Have a Good Time - (catchy, good vibes) Father and Daughter - (this ones a tear jerker for me) The Only Living Boy in New York - (technically a Simon & Garfunkel song but he wrote it about Art Garfunkel while he was away shooting a film. That is what the song is about and it is a beautiful tribute to friendship)

If you've got about 15 minutes to spare to watch a video that gives some idea of how they perform, live (this song, given a different treatment), you might enjoy this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/boSuhqWwasiqfrc (dUg does some overtone singing in the beginning, for one thing - and he also "preaches" at The First Church of Rock n Roll - where they say the f-word if necessary, so don't be put off by that) Him and Jerry were in a band that had a hand up from guitarist Phil Keaggy (from the Christian music scene - a great guitarist). That moved them kind of into that world (and Jerry is pretty much a part of it). Then they met Ty, and began to detach themselves from that world (because they were never a "Christian band" - just a band with people of various levels of faith and non-faith in it, who all got along well). If you listen to the interviews for their most recent album, you'll get the story from the horses mouth, instead of this half-remembered hearsay. The main thing is that they don't fit neatly into some little box. They're them, and they take whatever artistic liberties they like, to make the music they like.
