Built on Dec. 11, 1987, this car marked the end of General Motor's mid-size rear-wheel-drive G Platform and the closing of GM's Pontiac, MI, assembly plant. It was purchased by Buick dealership owner Bob Colvin, who prominently displayed it in a specially made 23-by-13-foot climate-controlled “bedroom” at his house. With only 33 miles and powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, it still wears the original Window Sticker that says, "The Last Grand National," and all the factory-installed interior plastic is still in place. This black beauty with gray interior has unprecedented levels of photo and video documentation. A GM film crew captured the car's final assembly and the emotional line workers who autographed their names on the engine and throughout the undercarriage as each installed his or her part for the final time. As the Buick progressed down the assembly line, the workers decorated it with signs reading, "Built by the Best" and "The End," and both signs are included in the sale. Designating it is the final Grand National, Buick applied an additional badge to the header panel, just above the passenger side headlight assembly. The car was prominently displayed by Buick at the 2003 Buick Centennial in Flint, MI, and starred in the 2012 film "BLACK AIR: The Buick Grand National Documentary."

As a GN and GNX owner, there was so much left out. To me, "Black Air" created visions GN's doing wheel stands. Few people that were the real movers and shakers in the GN world were interviewed or even mentioned. Only a short segment of the great GN racing scenes of these cars at the Buick GS Nationals was shown ... THE GS Nats. is the greatest Buick performance venue bar none. And on and on. So I was very disappointed after hearing the early hype about this movie. I expected much more.

I've been following this car for years. What a great story of when Bob Colvin, his wife and son went to the Pontiac MI "g-body" plant to film and watch this car being built. He contacted the 'higher up's' at GM early in 87 to tell them that he wanted the last one. His dealership sold the highest amount of Turbo Regals in his zone. They couldn't promise him the last one, but told him his would be "one of the last" one's built. Imagine his excitement when he found out he was getting the last one. Can't wait to see what this car sells for.....

Beautiful car. I bought a brand new one in December of 1987, and based on the VIN of my car, it was built about a month before this one. I thoroughly enjoyed that GN, and back in the day, it was hard to beat at the stop-light drags. Great fun. Life went on, and I sold it in the early 90's. Found the current owner of the car, through a friend, and learned its located about 50 miles from where I live. I've been in regular contact with the current owner, and he's more than aware - when he's ready to sell, I'm the first call he makes.

I have a t top 87 and during restoration I found the build sheet inside the door panel. Mine was built in October 1987. My dream car and after minor bolt-ons it has 500hp.

I prepped these when they were new as a Buick Tech. You had to take them out and whomp on them because because the O ring seal at the oil filter housing got crimped during final assembly at the factory and they would blow out and spray oil all over the block. Great cars and a ton of fun to drive...

My father built that "bedroom" the car has been stored in all these years. It had a large window opening into the den so you could view it from there.

The Grand National may be unsophisticated, but a lot of people with fond memories of "the good old days" will find its throaty voice and squalling rubber to be exactly the sort of aural gratification they've been missing lately.

Actually, for 1984-1987 the Turbo Regals were VERY sophisticated. Sequential port fuel injection, distributorless ignition system and a front mounted intercooled V6 Turbo set the Turbo Regals apart at a time when GM still pushed out carbed V6's and V8's.

@ct87gn25

Yep, I suspect that after the "last GN" sells, interest will be even higher on these cars, if that's even possible. I bought my 87 GN in 2001, glad I did as prices have gone higher and higher on them since. It's all about supply and demand. Many of these cars were driven hard, wrecked, stolen, parted out for their valuable parts and just rotted out in the 'rust belt' states and are no longer with us. Pretty sure it's a safe bet to say that at least half are gone. And they didn't make that many to begin with. Buy one now if you want one as by spring prices will skyrocket.

@@buick3.8grandnational99 Due to aerodynamics, the TTA can be potentially faster than a GN and the engine has a few minor upgrades over the GN, too. Heads are different than the GN but the same as some of the front wheel drive Buick V6's for packaging purposes in the Firebird engine bay. Pistons are not designed to interchange either because of the heads. Still, all BUICK. Go for it! It can be a "sleeper" nowadays. Unlike the GN, few people even know what it is.

Because the grandnational is a piece of state of the art in automotive engineering. Just as fast (0 to 60 and 1/4 mile) as the super cars of that time. The grandnational and mostly the GNX were kinda like American super cars at that time. It would be the equivalent of buick making a car with 900hp. Chevy would lose their minds. A grocery getter that would smoke the C8. I have a t top version and after putting in 20k I have a 500hp with 600tq car. That's on an unopened stock rotating assembly engine with a bigger turbo, injectors, and bigger fuel pump, larger exhaust.
