After months of anticipation, the 2023 Honda XR150L is FINALLY getting to dealers in the U.S.! And I was lucky enough to not only get a first look at the inexpensive new dual sport bike, but I ALSO GOT TO RIDE IT!!
This new XR 150L really feels like the strange love child of my Honda Grom and my Suzuki DRZ400, so I'm not sure if I need something that fills that gap. But at the same time...this thing was a BLAST! In my eyes, minimoto meets dualsport is a match made in heaven! Especially for a new/first time rider!
So what do you guys think- Is the new XR150 a hit or a miss? Should we add one to the channel fleet or no? Personally, I feel like for the price the XR150L is a no brainer...
Shout out to Preston Powersports in Easton, MD for this opportunity! Make sure to check them out and be sure to ask for my guy Tyler!

That gas cap isn't "cheap" it's incredibly old school. Tons of older bikes had that style of gas cap. Grew up in a dealership from the 90's through the 2000's (family owned). Everything about this bike screams 1990's, which isn't a bad thing. Bikes have become overly complicated and excessively priced. This is a breathe of fresh air.

Bikes like this were pretty common in the 70's and early 80's. I think this is a smart move for Honda. A less intimidating first bike to attract new riders. Probably a decent city bike for most riders.

My parents bought me a used Honda 175 twin back around 1979 or so for transportation to High School. We lived quite far from HS, so had to depend on parents taking us to school since no one was of age or had access to a car yet. Max. speed was 60, a little less with 2 people. During the summer, it enabled us to go to the beach several times a week, which was about 15 miles away. Very fond memories.

I've been riding one of these in SE Asia since 2017. They're great. The biggest problem with the US version is that it lacks the kick-start back-up. A few issues that crop up with them over time is that the ignition switch starts to go bad, the space for the toolkit is under the seat but you need tools to get the seat off to get to the toolkit area, and the rear drum brake is pretty wimpy. Those are small issues though. I've added a brighter LED headlight, a more robust set of handlebars, a USB power slot and battery voltage indicator, a beefier 520 chain and sprocket, a larger rear luggage rack, an engine skid plate, long arm mirrors, fatter front and rear tires (nice, but makes changes and tube repairs a pain), and a handlebar stabilizer bar to mount things on. Most of these are really nice upgrades.

The trail will be more nimble as the center of gravity it lower. (Easier to lift when you have to lay her down, which will happen at least once in you time riding. (Why full motorcycle boots are essential. $250 if a lit less than the loss of income during recovery. ) Unless you're going above 45mph pretty often you're not gonna miss the fifth gear. Less power but the 125 still has enough to get a 230lb rider to 50mph.( screaming mind you. But still ) the trail costs more but if you throw a smart carb on the xr150l it'll come out around the same price.

I like it... worth mentioning is it is supposed to get 124 MPG which I think is awesome. Around where I live the roads are 45mph and realistically you need to be doing 50-55 if you don't want to get run over. That's the only thing keeping me from buying something like this to play around on. I still might for that price. Seems like a lot of fun! I wonder if changing out the sprocket would allow it to get up to 70 - 75 or so? I bet it's geared more towards lower end torque for off road from the factory.

I have owned the XR150L for 6 years. I would not change the gearing for more speed. In my opinion it is gear more for the street then off road having taken mine off road many times. I do wish it had a 6 speed trans like the Yamaha version. I could use a bit more low for off road and bit more high end for street. Which a 6 speed trans would give. I might even have purchased the Yamaha 125 if i had to do it over again. Not only does it have the 6 speed it has a 21" front wheel and 18" rear where the Honda has a 17" rear and 19" front. and the Yamaha 125 has 2 more HP then the XR150L. I'm not sure if the Yamaha is sold in the states.

I also had to replace the clutch due to the gearing wile off roading, ridding double and going up a monster hill. But the bike was 5 years old by then also. I have replaced the rear breaks about 5 times. A lot of city driving is the reason for that. I would recommend the bike it is a good bike. We had this bike for like 10 years down here in Argentina, and it has been doing great in our market as a city bike, people who delivers packages or food absolutely love this thing as a work machine, its suspension make it comfortable to ride even in not so well mantained roads, and its engine makes justice to the Honda logo printed on it, they get to ridiculous high km counts and are basically unbreakeable. Awesome first bike.

Good question…honestly I’m not sure 🤔 I saw that they couldn’t see me and assumed they might pull out, so the safest option I feel like always comes back to the rider’s situational awareness regardless of what the driver does. In this case I think she made the right call by stopping, but if there were a car barreling down the other lane it would’ve been best for her to just gun it, assuming she could do it in a controlled way.

I think the Grom definitely still has its place in things since it’s a true minimoto, fuel injected, and honestly just a much better build quality. BUT with that said, for someone buying brand new, the XR150 will make their decision on a Grom much more difficult. To your point though, I think this bike is much more “competition” for the Grom than the Navi is. It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out! Also, it doesn’t seem like there’s any dealer markups on these bikes yet (at least where I went), but it’ll be interesting to see how much they get marked up in the used market the way that Navis did when they first released and were impossible to find.

I have not been able to ride for a while but my first ride was a ride on a Honda Trail 90. That tells you how long ago that was. A buddy from high school bought one and came down to show it to me. I asked it I could ride to which he said sure. I took off and I was having a blast. Of course not a super bike but a fun one. I was gone for a while so I went ahead and filled the tank. Just as I arrived back to my place they were worried and mentioned they were just about to call the cops to see if I had a problem. I understand that I was gone for a couple of hours. The ride got me hooked. Honda dealers were trying to off the 305 Dreams when I went looking to buy. I was in the showroom talking to the salesman and I noticed another bike in there. It was just coming out. The CB 350. I asked what the difference between the tow was and as it turned out the 350 was barely more money than the 305. No brainer. Guess what I bought. I loved it After all these years sadly it is gone. My brother does motorcycle sculptures. He made me one of my 350. I have it on a shelf in my den. Very accurate details and it is all metal, none of that plastic junk. If someone is curious I will take a photo and post it.
