Comparing an iPhone with BMPC 4K? You are bold, yet iPhone + Filmic is a worthy contender

Question: What is your opinion on filming in HDR? I love how HDR looks but then some people can’t view HDR content so wouldn’t that effect how the video looks? Would it be better to film in SDR so everyone sees the same image?

Really depends on what you’re doing. SDR is my preferred right now, and probably will be for a while. As you say, many can’t see it and if the metadata isn’t there it doesn’t look right.

I really like the footage from the filmic app. Apple should upgrade their camera glass or the coating of their glass. It's low quality and it produces so much flare on light sources. If you try to shoot at night time in a city with artificial lights you will see that it's almost unusable. Other than that it's a very capable system.
@QIsForK124 жыл бұрын
Is that what causes the flare? A simple coating?
@VenomIIID4 жыл бұрын
@@QIsForK12 I think a little help from Zeiss or Leica will help Apple. For example, Sony uses Zeiss glass with T* (star) Coating to fight flares. On the other hand, if you don't mind the distracting flares or you like them, then you are good to go.

It looks great but i dunno if anyone else notices this with Filmic Pro on any iphone including here, the judderiness of the image when your panning, 9:33-9:40 look at the towers in the background. I was having this issue with my iphone 8 shooting on Logv2, i tried different shutter speeds to no avail, it was so choppy it bugged me too much, ive since stopped using filmic pro and have found the native camera doesnt do that. If anyone has any ideas please share some thanks
@iphoneographers4 жыл бұрын
Would say it’s just the 24p shooting at 1/48 shutter and so there will inherently be judder sometimes in shots regardless of the app or camera, especially when shooting run & gun style. The native app is constantly auto adjusting the shutter etc, so it might hide it more, not sure.

There is the “green dot” in the flares that’s been present for a while in other phones too, but it can be reduced or eliminated using third-party lenses. What the difference between shoot using 10-bit natural and using logv3 then delog?
@iphoneographers3 жыл бұрын
Natural has a baked-in REC709 look. LogV3 is log and so it’s very flat and retains image detail in the shadows & midtones providing more dynamic range and thus more latitude for post color grading. The DeLog LUT returns it to a standard look that you can then customize.

I saw your DolbyVision 10bit HDR video where u mentioned, The upcoming LogV3 being 10bit, so is this really SDR and not HDR? Is LogV3 10bit not already HDR? if not, how do we change it to HDR or we'll have to shoot in Dolby and sacrifice colorgrading? I know I've asked in other video but, what's the difference between the DolbyVis HDR 10bit and LogV3 10bit, I must admit, to say all these is confusing is and understatement. great video nonetheless.

I just replied in a previous comment, but they’re both 10-bit, just one is SDR and one is HDR. LogV3 is SDR (and is for color grading) and Dolby Vision is HDR (not designed for color grading - has a baked in HDR look).

I feel like shooting flat or normal is better while Having your color image already set by manipulating the saturation and vibrance. Or am I missing something?
@technoendo4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that flat/natural is better when FilmicLOG was 8-bit from what I've learned about it, but now that its 10-bit we should be on the lookout for dynamic range/noise/image quality tests to re-evaluate things. Be skeptical of tiny sensors of smartphones and their ability to capture deep color/dynamic range, but if you do any color grading then going from 8-bit to 10-bit on a log format may add valuable data for highlight recovery and grading latitude. This is a decent free upgrade to the recording/file format. My guess: everybody with capable hardware that likes to color grade and that is paying attention will migrate to 10-bit color profiles. We should wait for the tests though.
@iphoneographers4 жыл бұрын
Just depends what you’re doing. I shoot log on both traditional cameras and iPhones in 8-bit and have had great results, although many don’t. But now with 10-bit it’s definitely worth exploring (on both). Also depends on the type of project. For quick turnaround stuff I’ll often just shoot natural or flat. The other thing too now with the iPhone 12 Pro Max especially because of a larger sensor it’s so much better in low light and the video noise levels are low. It’s a very solid option.

HLG and DV profile 8.4 (which is also basically HLG with some DV metadata -- fairly similar), both rec2020, and interestingly it looks like the histogram and analytics are working when in 10-bit mode but still not in DV mode (unless you use the one inside the WB tool and leave the color profile selection open for its exposure histogram). I'm happy scopes/analytics now works in one of the two HDR recording modes. FilmicLOGv3 going 10-bit is also good news and I imagine once folks do their dynamic range/other tests everybody paying attention will stop shooting in 8-bit log on smartphones and migrate to 10-bit (assuming their hardware is capable).

There is one very important caveat that needs to be explained in this upgrade and that is that in order to shoot the 10 bit you can only do 24 FPS ,30 FPS will reduce the resolution to 2K and 60 FPSwill reduce it to 1080 P. In a day and age when most filmmakers want 4K and are creatively restricted to 24 FPS what is the point of this upgrade, especially when it’s only in an iPhone 12 model. your’e held hostage to 24P. Sorry - not impressed.
@iphoneographers4 жыл бұрын
Actually you can do 4K 30FPS, 25FPS and 24FPS. At this point you cannot do 4K 60 FPS in 10-bit log. The 10-bit aspect is part of the iPhone 12 and 100% dependent on the Apple hardware, thus it won’t work on previous generation phones.
