Neil Armstrong was VERY stoic. That's one of the reasons he was chosen to command the first moon landing. So A+ for them being authentic to the man. I'd rather that be the case, then to embellish his character to please audiences. So your "detachment" is a good sign for me.

See your point. Don't agree. Think that was the point. The film is about assumtions, and how people shouldn't assume based on hunches and rumors. It isn't about his life, it is about this very personal experience he went through that also happened to be the most globally viewed event in history. People assumed a lot about Armstrong and the moon landing itself. There are still people claiming it was a hoax. And then there are people saying "we walked on the moon". We didn't. They did. Armstrong was a very private person and that was not a good thing in a lot of situation. But the movie goes through why he is like that and how he feels about certain people and situation. But in the end it isn't a character study. It is a dive into an extremely famous event that a lot of people feel many things about, even though they should probably shut up. Loved it. A+ film making.

@Soundtracks926 жыл бұрын
@@raam726 We haven't been back to the moon because we don't have the military backing our funds for space exploration anymore. NASA's budget is only 0.5% of the Federal budget today. (4.5% during the Cold War) The military's budget is over 600 billion dollars. Also back then we were at war with the Soviet Union, and that was the sole reason for the Space Race. We'd need another country to challenge us to go back, or go to Mars. Luckily, private companies like SpaceX are looking to be ahead of the game, and may lead the new frontier in a few years. Kinda sad and ironic that the United States is now having a mini Space Race with itself just go try to back to where it was, and a private company is accomplishing more than what modern NASA is attempting. Since NASA retired the Space Shuttle, we now have to hitch rides with the Russians just to get to the ISS. The fact that we now depend on the ones who we were previously at war with to get into space, to get back into space is perhaps the biggest irony and one of the greatest embarrassments of all time. We pay them to ride on their spacecraft and we no longer have a spacecraft of our own for our astronauts. Hopefully SpaceX's Dragon capsule will be ready soon, and it looks like it will be in service before NASA's SLS is.

Armstrong was not nearly as stoic as this movie portrays. If you read the transcripts he teases other astronauts, celebrates achievements, awes at the environment, etc. He put on a very professional public face, but he wasn't nearly as empty and emotionless as this movie portrays him. It was a movie that focused only on him and aggressively ignored everything else, so it set the high bar for itself.

And I think Chazelle did a tremendous job to give us a better picture how this mission was nearly impossibble. Because everybody dies around Armstrong, nearly killed himself also, and its just a can, and Nasa want this can to land in the face of Moon. Just Crazy. And the people reaction was so transparent. Frist everybody want to closed the mission, because just a money grinder, than everybody (blondies from the street, who know shit about spacefare) said: I always beleieved in this. I dont understand why you didnt get emotionally connected with this movie. I sure did. I cried at the end because it was dealing with the themes of life and death, loss and grief, and acceptance in letting go. I believe this movie is a masterpiece as well. I heard that some of Niel Armstrong's closests friends said that the short time he was alone on the moon, he left something there, and that item had something to do with his deceased daughter. So you could say that, that scene would be accurate in its symbolism. I give the movie an AA++

I think you picked away at this movie like you were performing an autopsy. (One of the main characteristics that really bugs me about critics.) Did you consider the possibility that the detachment you felt was intended by the film makers? When you consider how much was happening to Armstrong throughout the movie. From the death of his young daughter. To the death of his colleagues in the fire. To the death of Elliot whom he thought might be joining him on a future mission. So much loss. Who wouldn't be detached? Hence, audience members might feel detached, as they are watching someone who is hiding out in his own head. As he was when he was about to leave for the moon mission, and his wife had to talk him into talking to his sons about possibly not returning from the mission. Maybe your detachment came from watching Armstrong detach from his family.

One reviewer (a blogger from "MarySue") who apparently is a "top reviewer" (how?) gave the movie a rotten score -only- because it's not politically charged (about modern politics). Her words: "It feels as though there's been a tonal misstep; someone didn't read the room properly. We don't need apolitical platitudes." - Kate Gardner, """""""Top Critic""""""" Basically the RT score needs to be fan-recalculated to discard that review lol, she bashed the film because it didn't take a stand on things like Trump or 2018 Democrat/Republican garbage. As I was watching the movie I had the same reaction as you did. It felt very detached and empty. A lot of this, I also believe, has to do with the lack of development that anyone outside of armstrong and maybe his wife gets. I mean there were only 2 scenes with him and Aldrin together, where they traded very few words. I'm still mixed on this decision to make armstrong so isolated. If the purpose was to kinda show on the screen how he may of felt internally because of his flaw of not being able to let go of pain and internalizing it, this movie brings a whole new meaning and story. For instance that Moon scene with the bracelet may have not been meant to be taken literally, but him more metaphorically letting go of his grief. I really would love to see it again with the thought of heavy symbolism in mind. I think this will either be Chazelles forgotten weird in between movie or possibly a cult classic. All the elements for a great movie are there as you said. Maybe it did come together and I just didn't see it. Anyway great review Chris.

Hey! I was at an early screening in Atlanta yesterday and both Damien and Ryan showed up after the movie for a Q&A. MILD SPOILERS They talked about the part of him on the moon and what he did and said that the astronauts were allowed to bring personal items with them. Damien said that naturally the astronauts had every single second planned out of what they were going to do when they got onto the moon but apparently Neil actually took a detour to that crater and stayed there for about 10 min. Damien said that Neil did in fact throw something into the crater but we don't know what, so they decided to incorporate that thing. And because he stayed there so long he actually had to rush back. And about the feeling of not really knowing Neil as portrayed in the movie ... they said said he was super reserved and kind of secretive so I feel like that's what they wanted audiences to feel. It was an awesome experience being in the same room as them😆

Chris, --no offense, but you seem to be unaware that Neil Armstrong himself was "stoic", detached and quiet. Gosling was just accurately portraying him. I think you should see the movie a second time, as Justin Chang (L.A Times) did. He liked it the first time but was far more impressed the second.

I didn’t feel detached from Ryan’s character; if anything it showed how Neil really was but behind the scenes he was hurting so much with the loss of his daughter that he never got over. I didn’t know this part of his story until I saw the movie and it knocked me for six. So emotional; I have a young daughter and I could understand how heartbreaking it would be. I love this movie and the score, especially the moon landing sequence.

I enjoyed the movie. I was focused the whole time. What’s best is, I was alone in the cinema, people were at work and school that’s why. The thrillest and maybe my favorite part of the movie was during the Gemini 8 launch. The details are mindblowing it gave me more ideas how the astraunots felt inside that assembled metal with bombs of enormous blasts and infinite rumbles and shaky seats and... I mean, I really appreciate the details that I have just been introduced to. Of course, Apollo 11 event was also fantastic. I also really admire the details of them dealing the whole NASA projects that they have to handle, the complexity not just science, but psychologically. For us knowing there is a big success ahead of them is one thing, but for them not knowing that yet, that it’s about losing another friend or their own lives and leaving their kids behind, or losing another millions of taxes, or just ending up to nothing, is a whole different level and this movie was able to give us that part of the idea. Amazing movie. I recommend watching it solo in the cinema like I did. XD. I also expected many experts will have something to say about the actual facts, but I went to the cinema to absorb additional info about the experience of being inside that rocket and the psychological feeling of dealing the enormous tasks that they were up to. The only thing that makes my mind goes back and forth into is, associating the actors’ faces with the real ones since I know Neil’s and Buzz’s faces so well, we all do, and they are not that close, especially Buzz. But acting is more important, so.

As a fellow film enthusiast, I definitely can relate to feeling conflicted about a film directly after seeing it. Sometimes even a few days to a week go by before I can process all my thoughts. I'd suggest maybe giving yourself some more time to process your ratings and overall conclusion of a film before making your review. Your reviews are great. Chris, I love watching ur reviews, but I don't think you have given enough credit for how well crafted this movie is, the tension, the realism. was hoping u could have given a fairer review.
@thefirstbourne1495 жыл бұрын
@JAson Wd Yes, he did give credits to the craft of the movie. Almost the entire last half of this review was talkiong about how well-crafted this movie was. You're thinking of two totally different things. I mean...I don't think I'm going to hate this movie, far from it. But, I was getting a little concerned since the trailers gave a Gosling performance that was pretty much the same really sincere stoicness, which still works, but for a character, it did feel more emotionally detached. The visuals will win me over probably more than the characters, despite their attempts to make the characters as sympathetic as possible, but I think the real problem was the variety. Pretty much everyone was stoic. Not everybody in that trailer really acted like a normal person, which, not in the way that they talk weird or they say really clichéd lines, or they're written badly, but just from the trailers, and judging from Stuckmann's review, probably the actual film itself, nobody really seemed to act that much different than Gosling. I'd understand maybe the family acting similarly, but there really aren't as many other characters that act any different from them. I'll have better juice to give once I actually formulate my own opinion, don't worry.
@CHMgamemedic7775 жыл бұрын
Don't listen to the others Chris. You said something completely right about goslings character. Gosling has a very mysterious aura to himself, and he used that very well in Blade Runner. I needed more energetic emotion, i needed more expression. Goslings Armstrong seems like a so introvert and complex character, and that adds an extra layer for you to come through to the character (in a kinda negative way). Gosling is a great actor, but i could just not relate to the very overall stale pokerface he had through the whole movie. I needed more of that (The brother reacting to his sister dying in Hereditary) kinda expression. To really immerse yourself further into his perspective. Anyway, great movie!

Finally got around to watching this. For a self-proclaimed movie buff I tend to miss a lot of movies I really want to see. Let alone a self-proclaimed movie buff who relearned his grade 12 maths and went beyond to university level maths just to feed an obsession on space. From an aerospace nerd and nutter for space stuff, this film was remarkable. The story was certainly told from Neil's perspective, but it nailed almost every mark on realism and historical accuracy. The moon landing sequence they obviously skipped over several pieces of dialogue but the fact that they didn't CHANGE any of the dialogue is astounding. Even the VFX shots line up with the camera footage from both Gemini 8 and Apollo practically frame by frame. Not to mention the way the space craft moved on camera was dead on. I'm so pissed I missed this when it was in theatres. I agree that the cohesion felt a bit off but even so this is still now one of my favourite films ever. A grounded, visually stunning and "no bullshit" telling of the man who is the face of the greatest moment in human history.

To answer your question about what Neil did on the moon. I was at a screening with the author of the source book and he basically said it was artistic license, while also noting that it has never been revealed what Armstrong brought to the moon in his personal effects. He said something to the effect that "sometimes poetry is more satisfying than cold fact" and through his extensive interviews with Neil Armstong he felt that it was a credible possibility about what happened at West Crater.
@Kie776 жыл бұрын
But Neil Armstrong was quite detached in real life. This movie was a 5/5 see ya at the Oscars movie. Go see it!
@mhobsonirish5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Chris, great review! I agree with pretty much everything you said. For me, though, the sort of detached feeling we get as an audience about Armstrong's journey I think is done so purposely. For one, that sort of stoicism is 100% on par with Armstrong himself, and he was famous for being that unflappable guy. Second, the sort of quasi-objective shots from the very first scene all the way up until the Apollo 11 mission serve as a tool for the audience, I think, to put us in Armstrong's position; or at least close enough to experience his tortured life. Ultimately the detachedness serves as showing how Armstrong dealt with these major beats in a stoic manner, but it presents to the audience this question: "Wow. At what point on this journey would I have tapped out?" That question was something that kept popping up in my head throughout the movie; and was at its loudest when Armstrong was using the practice lunar landing vehicle later in the film. At that point I remember telling to myself "I would not have blamed him if he just quit here." It's that semi-detached story telling that I think allows the audience to look into Armstrong's frame of mind while simultaneously looking within ourselves. And that I think is the great, if not perfectly executed, success of the story.

Love the reviews, Chris. I haven't seen the movie yet, obviously but in what you describe as what might be a fault in the movie, that Armstrong was detached from the movie or the viewer, you are describing exactly how people describe their relations with the man. He, Buzz and Mike Collins worked closely together for years yet Collins said none of them were friends and were amiable strangers to use his phrase. No one really called him a friend except for Ed White. People worked with him in NASA for a decade and never even knew he had a daughter let alone that she died in such tragic circumstances. The director got it spot on by your description. Sorry for nerding out. Keep up the good work.

This movies was so beautiful. I liked how movie never lost focus and stayed with Neil Armstrong. The movie could have been Go Go America and it would seem cheesy and propaganda. The space scenes were very intense and again stayed inside the space vehicle giving the scenes very intense and intimate experience. the sound was so good in this movie. And the acting of the lead characters were very good. In fact all the acting in this movie was on point. My only negative is I wish there was more technical explanations. But causal movie goers don't care about that especially women.

I went in thinking I'd love it, but was also disappointed. The old blurry film look killed the IMAX experience for me. The extreme closeups and claustrophobic look worked really well in the spaceship scenes, but kinda ruined the other bits...And the little dialogue and explanations they had made for a very slow movie. Although I think they did a great job showing how impossible the mission seemed and how difficult it was, it was also underwhelming due to the movie being so slow and when he finally lands on the moon, the image is suddenly crystal clear CGI...I didn't understand that artistic choice. Why not make the entire movie look either old or modern? The bit at the end was nice and sad, but it's only "good" if it's based on reality, otherwise, Neil came off like a quiet, boring guy who didn't know how to communicate with his family. I did however enjoy the use of the real audio from the moon landing.

About 10 years ago I was having in depth conversations with Apollo 14 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell. At one point I asked what Neil Armstrong was really like and Edgar described him. The character you see in this movie is picture perfect of the image Edgar gave to me, actually, Armstrong was much quieter than Gosling’s portrayal. One thing Edgar said really stuck with me, “[Neil] rarely spoke unless asked but when he did you knew he was always going to be right and you were always going to be wrong”

I agree with everything you said. I think the reason he was stoic WAS because of everything he endured. The man flew combat missions in Korea. For all of those who have been to war, knows that it can change a person drastically. He also lost a lot of friends along the way, as well as his daughter. Not to mention all of the people who lost their lives in the space missions. I would take a leap with all of this, and hope that Ryan as well as Damien took this all into account when making Neil like this.

The very touching scene that you might be referring cannot be confirmed, but it cannot be denied either. It wasn’t unheard for those who landed on the moon to leave behind personal items for personal reasons. Armstrong’s family are also unsure of if he did it or not. But there is proof that he had brought a couple of personal items for the mission (which was common for astronauts to do) and on the moon there was a 10 minute period in which Armstrong was by himself with no communication. So the theory for what he did is still in the air, but there is so little evidence to confirm it. But I wouldn’t doubt if his family would believe he did that extremely touching moment in that scene. I honestly bawled my eyes out at such a heartwarming moment.

I am a HUGE Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo nerd. I just saw the movie this afternoon. Since I went in knowing 99% of the content, I do agree with you Chris about the astronauts relationships and lack of character development. My husband didn’t go with me because he knew I would be spitting out all kinds of info like free return trajectory, TLI, launch azimuth, etc. 😂 I realize the movie is about Neil, but I was shocked they completely left Apollo 8 out of the movie. In addition, though Neil WAS stoic and more of an introvert and shunned the “fame”, the script writers didn’t have to make him appear to be on some type of tranquilizer throughout the film. Movie goers that don’t know the facts inside and out like myself will never understand or recognize the roles the Gemini and Apollo astronauts played in getting to the moon. I clearly knew who Pete Conrad was before they called him by name. However, technically, the movie was absolutely stunning and accurate visually.

I disagree... I think Neil was a nerd and that showed, he was a quiet genius who loved his family but also loved the insane engineering challenge presented with no ego (compared to buzz for example), he was like the anti astronaut, more like he was in love with the theory of it all and saw the beauty in all that... into realization. I loved it. I thought the pacing was perfect and felt real to a real life. Neil was not able to be a totally emotive guy because he just wasn't but the love was there... if that makes sense... I think Gosling nailed it. To me the crux of the movie was the approach to the moon... that was astounding motion wise and musically... awesome.
