CT you're bringing it all back to me, memories of 40 years ago.... my ass end hanging out of the backend of my 70 bus frantically reaching for my trusty 10mm, 13mm, 12mm, and I believe the occasional 17mm. I enjoy the memory being jogged to a simpler time when 3 or 4 wrenches and a flat head screw driver could dismantle an engine! Great luck with your resurrection of Rusty......

CT, been a few years since I stripped down one of the engines, but if I remember rightly, you need to undo the bellows underneath the engine to the release the linkage which runs up past the barrels. Great quality video as always. We are all still watching. Ben, 🇬🇧

Ah, the old broken bolt/ stud trick. Usually results in the creation of amazing new adjectives, with the socket then used for target practice! It's about then that I realise that was my last (findable) 10mm socket! Really enjoying your vids/work CT, you're a patient man! Cheers again from Down Under.

You need to see if you can get your hands on a portable handheld induction heater. They heat up and ease removal of the many rusted nuts and bolts you find on old engines. I borrow one from work and it's amazing. So easy and quick to use and much nicer than sheared fasteners!

FWIW, those use standard 18650 batteries that you can get lots of places. So you can swap in a higher capacity cell ( they have a fairly low cap one), or keep a spare on a charger.

Don't know if you noticed but the shaft of some screwdrivers are shaped like a bolt so you can put a wrench on it to add torque, The handle of craftsman drivers allows you to place a large box wrench on the plastic handle to do the same. so if vise grips can't fit in the space you can use the wrench trick. sometimes it snaps the tip of the drivers but it is handy to know.

Next start with the exhaust nuts on the flanges . If they don't come of easily get a cold chisel and hold it against the side of the nut paralell with the stud and wack it a few times. What you are trying to do is either split the nut or expand it enough to get it to come loose on the thread. this is better than breaking the stud off as getting a 40yr old broken stud out is no fun. Once they are off, the inlet manifold is next , then the tinware and rocker covers. Then the distributor, fuel pump and generator mount. Have you bought a flywheel lock? they are cheap. You may want to put it on the ground as the flywheel bolt is tight (36 mm socket) and you may end up pulling it off the stand. Its normal to use a long handled power bar and a piece of pipe. fit the flywheel lock and wedge the head of the motor under the bumper of a convenient car or a bench with a block of wood under the other head. this is to stop the motor trying to rotate. Undo the crank pulley (30mm) then undo the flywheel nut. (36mm) then you can take the heads off and the air deflectors under the cylinders. the cylinders. Don't break the fins. The oil pump and all of the case bolts and nut and split the case.

@CT - That engine looks like it could be original to the car. That thing under the carb is a governor. Governors were only installed on Type 2 buses. If the engine is original, the trans is probably original too. Original engines and trans make VW's more valuable (to the right buyer, anyway). When you're rebuilding it, try to retain as many original parts as possible.

Enjoy these vids of yours. But can you drop the shots of every nut and bolt and the socket used to remove it. Just saying.

yokom zare I agree! These long visual inspections of every part gets overly tedious, not to mention doubling the length of the video! I end up double tapping to get beyond those shots. I love what you’re doing CT but man o man! Not trying to troll you just a friendly suggestion?

May sound like overkill but I replace all the bolts, studs and nuts with stainless. All holes are retapped and cleaned. I work on Porsche products that are very precise.

I know it's moot now but, next time take the carb off and the blower housing will slip right off. Or take the blower out of the housing.

If you are going to continue to shoot your videos as A POV, I would suggest you invest in a decent quality pair of safety glasses which has a video camera and mic built in. Then you will be able to use both hands to work. Very convenient and you can get them with pretty good quality cameras nowadays. I saw one recently with a pinhole 1080p built into the bridge so you don't have the problem of lining up a close up shot with the parallax view of a temple mounted camera. Don't know what you would do about guaranteeing focus when doing those long detailed small parts shots you use quite a bit.

CT moog if you don't get the camera glasses, don't give up on the pov shots. it kind of puts the viewer into the shop/garage. I find it interesting and compellingly.

20:39 I wonder what that linkage does. Open/close air flow? Diverter. 26:51 Cool valve covers. They look like the older master brake cylinder covers lol 27:24 Guessing that finned tower beast is the oil cooler/interior compartment heater contraption? 31:03 Everything loose, still can't get it out.... time for a beer lol (looks like it will have a small clip down below most likely). Old carb linkage technology where you have to rotate the arm around further than it goes in normal operation to line up the slot and pull it out freely.
