I'm 52 and just had my hip replaced on August 22nd. It has been overwhelming. Truly feel like a new person, it is miraculous. Though I want to go for a walk I'm not sure how far I can go. I know it feels better when I do walk, and they said it will help it to heal faster. Tomorrow I set out on a new adventure of walking. I waited about 10 yrs to have the surgery and all I can say is don't wait and suffer unnecessarily

This is such a good video. So accurate. I had my left hip replaced 2 weeks ago today. I’m a 65 yr old female that walked in to surgery w a cane In allot of pain. 2 hours after surgery I was up with a walker and putting pressure on my surgical leg. I was shocked !!! I went home that same day. OuTPATIENT. I only took oxy pain relievers for three days after surgery. And then just Tylenol. I was afraid to not use the walker as I could fall and mess it up. Got the guts to try it on day 5 and haven’t used a walker or cane since. My post ops appt was great. Finally saw the scar when they removed the bandage. It’s only 4 inches long. Amazing what Drs can do and only leave a 4 inch scar. Mine was the anterior approach ( front of thigh). Highly recommend this type of surgery. Still have a small amount of swelling in the thigh, but went grocery shopping yesterday with no issues. No pain. Good luck to everyone out there considering a hip replacement. I know everyone is diffeeent but my experience was awesome and I am the first to admit I have a very low tolerance to pain.

@mikewilliams7563 you will be so glad to have had this done. I'm 73 and 2 weeks post op, anterior approach. I've been up and around easily since day 3. Sometimes I use a walker "just in case" if when I stand up I feel a bit iffy. Watch some videos and read the comments by post surgical patients. You will be surprised at how well they are doing. You will too.

Quite frankly, its a miracle I can walk upstairs and down like homosapien rather than one of great apes that used to roam the meadows. Just being able to walk to a restaurant, go for a walk or wash the car🎉 Can't wait for the other hip to be done. Only had the surgery in March 23.

This is the BEST video I have seen. Thank you. Unfortunately, I am one of those healthy, active patient, who swims 4 days a week and did all the pre hip surgery exercises along with my normal yoga stretches. Thought I was ready for a quick recovery... Joke was on me. I am now on day 16 and just went for my post op visit. Since Day 4 I have been in excruciating pain. Not my hip, my leg swelled and started to bruise in the back and each day the swelling and bruising moved down my leg and now has settled in my foot and ankle. Can't even stand to walk as my arch is so swollen and bruised. Pain like I have never endured in my 72 years. I've been in contact with my surgeon since day 7 and at that time told me to stop all baby aspirin and ibuprofen. I take no meds, so I'm very sensitive to medication. I've done it all, elevate, iced, compression wraps (auto), PT... today I was told to stop all PT, and rest. Change to compression sock and elevate, but not at night in bed until my foot and ankle calm down. The opioids made me ill, dizzy, nauseous and shaky! Ridiculous... Now they changed my pain med to tramadol. I can assure you that I will NEVER say I wish I did this sooner. My hip was late stage severe hip arthritis so I had no choice. I put it off for 6 years with exercise. Best advice is to not wait as long as me. Today I was told by next week I will be walking around without any aids....we'll see.

I know everyone is different and this includes surgeons. You were clear, concise and gave good info. My surgeon is a nice guy has a good surgical reputation, however he seems so superficial, very zippity do dah and doesn’t seem to really listen or validate anything I’m trying to tell him. He made the whole anterior approach sound easy and I should be up and about with no issues. I guess I was that patient who wasn’t able to do this as of yet. Maybe he didn’t like the optics of my sister getting me a wheelchair. I knew I wouldn’t be able to walk all the way to his office with just crutches. I know many surgeons do have that ego thing going on and I know this from working around and for them for almost 40 years. I know, we in healthcare don’t make the best patients, or maybe we expect more. Anyway, I’m done complaining, i just find I appreciate docs like you, who don’t play games, give all pre and post op info and don’t talk down to the patient. Thank you.

We have watched probably 100's of hip related Utube videos. Yours we believe is the best, most real and factual ones we have found. We live in spain and my wife has just undergone hip surgery and while we have no critiscm of the quality of the surgery, the after operation support is somewhat lacking, not helped of course by our less than perfect understanding of the spanish language.Thank you for your videos, a breath of realism when cmpared with the majority of the utube hip op videos, mostly showing young heathy females performing appropriate physio therapy exercises, with barely a mention of bruising, pain and swelling. Thankyou again..

That's the best post-op video I've found ... usually the other videos explain the same "rules" and restrictions for everyone (don't do this, don't go over 90 degrees, etc), not taking into consideration "who" the patient is and how fit / active / old she or he is. Thanks! 👍

It's exactly 2 weeks today since my hip replacement. It's gone really well. I really miss being able to sleep on my side 😔. On the plus side, I'm able to walk with just a crutch. I can't wait to be able to start taking long walks again in the woods and just living life. It took me a while to come to terms with my situation as I'm in my late 30's. In the end, it's about the quality of life I wanted. I'm glad accepted reality on time and took the plunge.

I’m having surgery on my left hip on November 13 of 2023. I’ve watched a lot of KZbin videos, and this one that you produced is the best I’ve seen so far about what really to expect post-op. I am a 78 year old woman with pretty good leg strength, due to walking and swimming, so I am expecting and hoping that my recovery will go very smoothly and that I will get into the pool very soon after the operation.

I’m an 84 year old female who had a total posterior hip replacement. I needed one narcotic for pain two days after surgery otherwise one Tylenol 325mg took care of future discomfort. My main problem was severe swelling and bruising from thigh to feet that still persists three weeks after surgery and, while decreasing, may persist for a couple more weeks. While annoying, I can walk without walker or cane and don’t need Tylenol. Two items of great help: elevated toilet seat and that marvelous “grabber’. I drop a lot of things daily and this is a life saver. Last October I took a 21 mile walk with my daughter. Out of the question this year, maybe next year. Good luck!

I just had mine on nov 13, 7 days notice (as they had a cancellation) and was really given no idea what to expect after surgery. A lot of you tube videos show people up and around, walking with a cane or nothing after 3 days, I was so worried something was wrong when the after symptoms were magnified for me. This video is very realistic, if I might make one suggestion to surgeons office is make sure the patient knows what to expect, the pain, the setbacks, the healing. I'm 6 days out, tried using a cane today and it was ok, but wore me out...baby steps.

I am 54 y/o male. Had anterior hip replacement on 9/29/23. First things first, no patient should try and compare their results with others as everyone if different. My advantages were age, level of fitness and stable weight. I had pain, but also significant leg length discrepancy resulting in a terrible limp. I had same day surgery and was home by noon and going up stairs. I started having pain about 3 am that night when the regional block wore off. Saturday was the only day that was rough. I took only Tramadol, Tylenol and NSAIDS for the first three days. I was walking with cane for the next three days and within a week was walking unassisted. My results are not typical but have been lifechanging.

Had surgery two weeks ago. Some problems with anemia kept me in the hospital 3 nights. That is now resolved - I hope. Started having bruising a couple of days after I got home. Was pretty ugly and ran from my hip to the bottom of my right foot. Made sleeping difficult. So appreciate the PT who told me this is normal. And your video confirmed that. Nothing seems normal right now, but am trying to keep the faith - that everything will get more normal soon.

Pamela I had my right hip replaced in October of 21 and had the same problem w anemia. It took 3 months to build my blood back up. They don’t want to give you blood due to the higher risk of infection. Unfortunately, being anemic created low blood pressure and I could not take the stronger pain meds right after surgery because it lowered my blood pressure so far I passed out or felt very sick. Having my left hip replaced next week. Hoping for a better recovery this time!

@@pamelabrooks1944 I ended up losing twice as much blood with the left hip replacement. 1100 mls. They only provided one unit of blood and I am still anemic. Not sure why hospitals or doctors make different decisions about how to handle that situation. My hemoglobin and hematocrit are definitely below normal. It will take a few months to build it back up. I am about 4 weeks after surgery.

I am 47 and I just had an anterior hip surgery to fix 2 labrum tares. I was healing up fantastic it was so amazing. And then at about 3 weeks into my healing I slipped on the ice in a splits like fashion. My right leg stayed in place which is the side I had surgery but my left leg went out. It hurts and my surgeon has put my back on crutches, paused PT for 2 weeks, and I'm back in bed again. I am so frustrated. I was doing everything I was supposed to from using the CPM machine, Ted hose,and all my at home pt exercises. He said it's to enflamed to do another MRI right now so as long as the inflammation has gone down enough we will do one in 6 weeks at my next appointment. I'm scared I really don't want another hip surgery at least not yet. Thank you for this video it helped me understand a lot.

I had my hip replaced in 2017. I kept telling my doctor something was wrong. Not only pain in my hip, but terrible pain all the way down the front of my thigh. Wasn't able to put any weight on my leg for months! My doctor kept telling me "everything looked good " I told him something wasn't right! Now 7 years later, on disability, can't do anything, pain medication and heating pads, I found out through a bone scan that I never healed. My bones never grew to the implant! It's moving inside the femore and made some of my bone disintegrate. I am 57 years old now. I have surgery scheduled for July 9th. To have this all redone! What if it doesn't work again?!? I am terrified!

Had my first one in May 2022. Used a walker for 4 weeks than a cane for a week. 2nd one in Dec 2022. Changed surgeons, and only needed a cane for 4 or 5 days. I am 5 weeks in and can pretty much do anything. Picking a good Dr. can make a dirrerence.

Hi Judy, I had a right hip replacement in Nov 22. The relief from constant pain has been incredible. If you are able please excercise to strengthen muscles throughout your body. I could only do them in an armchair or on the bed, they did help my recovery and now I don't have the bone on bone pain anymore I can see and feel how much muscle wastage I had after 2 years immobility. I can walk a mile now and am very happy. I pray both your surgeries see you as a fit and happy lady very soon.

I had a posterior left total hip replacement just four days ago (31 Oct 2023). It happened very quickly (literally 10 days after the appointment to discuss whether I needed it), so I’m catching up on stuff that I wished I had known pre-surgery. The first few days post surgery were fairly rough- it literally felt like someone had sliced me open, folded my muscles back, sawed off and into my bones, and then stitched me back up. In my case, my pre-surgery pain wasn’t awful but it did limit my activity significantly. The post-surgery pain was higher than my pre-surgery pain though different pain. I’m 52 and am still not clear exactly what happened for my hip to deteriorate so rapidly (anxiously awaiting the operative biopsy results). In any case, my single biggest tip is to ICE the hip joint as much as possible. The first afternoon home from the hospital (while I still had hospital pain meds and was a bit loopy from the anesthesia) I didn’t ice vigilantly and I really felt it the next day. I resolved to do better and have been icing as continuously as possible since then which has really helped. I have very minimal swelling and the pain has subsided significantly. My leg DOES feel substantially longer (like I’m walking around on a stilt) which I realize is from fixing the significant cartilage loss that had occurred, but it’s sure taking some getting used to! Thankfully I have some chiropractor visits scheduled in the next few weeks to ensure I’m not throwing my back out of alignment trying to adjust. Otherwise, I’m just really glad I’m on THIS side of the surgery. My #1 tip (5 days post-surgery) is to ice your joint, and try to move around when it hurts. I felt that when I got up and moved around it helped ease the pain- it is counter-intuitive but it works. Good luck to you all!!

Dude avoid the chiropractor. Consult ur surgical team for guidance. Ur appliance is still settling in which will change ur anatomy. Follow the surgeon’s advice
@jenntown
@jenntown 8 ай бұрын
@@bluejay3945 Oddly, the surgeon didn’t give me much advice (other than to avoid the 90 degree angle and turning my hip/leg in). I asked about going to see the chiropractor, the surgeon was ambivalent so I went. The chiropractor was very conservative (as I anticipated he would be), but I don’t regret going since my upper back and neck felt better after some minor adjustments. Even at my 6 week follow up the surgeon still didn’t give much advice. In general my healing appears to be faster than usual, but I definitely have “stem” pain. The surgeon explained that it’s likely due to my height (shorter) and the disconnect between the natural flexibility in the femur and the rigidity of the metal prosthetic. He said it should eventually go away- it’s not terrible, but it’s noticeable when I have been more active.

@@loriemiller826 why go to a chiropractor for anything???? Are they actually doctors? When I was experiencing excruciating hip pain I decided to give a chiropractor a chance. He sat me down and used some “stick” that rammed my leg in 4 spots. Told me to walk which I did with a lip. He said “why are u still limping?” Total quack. IMO chiropractic is a placebo. It works because u are convinced it does. Of u really analyze it it becomes a laughing charade.

I had my left hip replaced in July 2023 and the recovering was somewhat easy. Of course, I had the usual discomfort after surgery but I moved through the healing process very well. Physical therapy was a little tough, but got easier as time went by. I'm having my right hip replaced tomorrow, May 23rd. I don't have the nervousness that I previously had because of the prior experience. Of course, I have a good doctor. He only does the anterior approach. I am 63 years old and I workout regularly, so I'm sure that helps with my recovery, This is an excellent clip!

@slipdisco Жыл бұрын
@@surfbumb123 If you are getting THR, the anterior approach is the best. The first surgeon I saw only does the traditional/posterior approach but he left the hospital that I use. When I chose the surgeon I have now, he stated that he only does the anterior approach. I am still amazed at how quickly things improved. BTW, we must be neck to neck with the surgeries: my list includes three hernia repairs, appendectomy, gall bladder removal, five lumbar spine surgeries, blood clot removal and thyroid removal for metastatic thyroid cancer. Most of the structural surgeries occurred before the age of 14. Needless to say, I'm a pro at this hospital stuff but I am sick and tired of doctors and hospitals. I need one more back surgery and I hope that to be the last. I workout regularly and when people find out my medical history, they are dumbfounded. I'm a college professor and I've been teaching virtually and I look forward to getting back in front of a live class pain free! Good luck with your hip procedures!

I was almost in no pain for the first 2 days. I could stand up from bed almost without using the weelchair. No pain in hip. But after a PT idiot specialist put me going upstairs the wrong way , i start having pain in thigh and could not bend the leg. After 2 days at home ,another idiot PT specialist came and put me to bend the leg and i could not even walk for another 2 days. And after 12 days still pain. So because of PT i am delayed in my recovery. For at least 3 weeks. So, for me and others, no PT 3-4 weeks after surgery. You have to heal first ,not manipulating your leg and joints,so you become more incapacitadet than before. It is enough walking. For strenght,another bullshit here the rush you to do things. You have time for that. No rush,better recovery. Thats why some doctors tell you ,no PT afrer surgery.

This was good information I wish I'd have seen before surgery as well but I also am on a support group through Facebook I don't know if many people know if that option but I found the support group when I had my foot surgery done and it was a blessing people that really understood what you were going through all different ages and it was understood everybody has their different paces and started differently and even after surgery healed differently so it was nice having relatable people to talk to, ask questions, vent to etc. it didn't replace doctors or physical therapists it's just friends who have gone through it or who are also about to go through it. And make new friends too.

I’m exactly 4 wks post-op. All in all, it’s all going as you’ve explained. I know for a fact, when I over-do,…. I pay for it in a very painful way. Today I was on my feet from 8:00a.m. until about 2:00, making dinner, doing laundry etc. I’m glad to conquer these things but I have to learn when to get off my feet!? That is my biggest difficulty. I saw my surgeon yesterday, our first visit since surgery. He recommended Benedryl to help me sleep because I can’t, ‘when I’ve been too active. I’m tired right now and want to sleep but the pain is awful. I think I’m my own worst enemy?? How long should you stay on your feet before you take a break and how long of a break? I think it’s important that patients understand limits after surgery. Thank you.
