To those who said start simple and check if the trans has oil, thank you… as you can see in this video the trans had mud in it!
Hopefully this is a positive trend that continues with this bike and the end result may just be riding it from NYC to Sturgis in 2025!

There’s a ball detent and spring that locates and engages notches in a plate and drum as you shift. It seems the detent spring was hanging up and when you dumped the crap oil/water and rinsed it , it freed it up allowing you to get the rest of the gears. Bravo!. If it’s still sticky you can pour diesel or kerosene , mixed with auto trans fluid in and slosh it around a while. Drain it and repeat as needed, then put fresh oil in and ride it a while, then drain and fresh oil again. That will also flush any rust or sludge out of the bearings.

Great story! Yeah it’s a steep goal, we went to Sturgis in ‘22 with my ‘96 Fatboy and my friend Chris’s and 2022 Road Glide CVO… but we trailered due to time. Chris currently has a 2024 CVO Road Glide ST and the plan is to ride out together (I think I’m gonna have more fun) and I’m shooting for my wife to ride the ‘96 Fatboy (which was the last bike her dad was riding before he passed away). It’s like we have to do this to honor the memories of both her dad and the original owner of this ‘84 Tour Glide (who is currently battling cancer). So big goal but hey shouldn’t we shoot for the moon… even if we miss we will end up among the stars!

Points are easy to install, easy to maintain, and cheap to replace. Plus, you can keep a complete ignition system in your tool bag for a small fraction of the cost of an electronic system. Give it some thought. Diaphragm clutch is late '84, but that doesn't mean that your bike doesn't have early '84 features. My '84 Softail has features from both early and late production.
@tta850
@tta850 3 ай бұрын
I have to research this bike some more, I’ve been told it’s early ‘84 and that the enclosed chain final drive is part of that, but honestly don’t know. The ignition parts were made 12th and 13th week of ‘84 so that may not be early in the model year depending on when production started 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just change all the fluids and run her how she is. After a couple of miles you will see what needs your attention. Don't touch that fuckin cam position sensor! On my old '84 FXRS Low Rider it looked exactly the same, I changed it for a new one and she wouldn't run properly anymore, no matter how I adjusted it. I've put the old molten looking piece of shit sensor back in and she ran like a charm. Just my two cents. Greetings from Germany

HD started 5spds on the rubber mounted FLT in 79 actually, then in 82 the FXR was added with the same drive line.

The five speeds changed through the years but yup it’s a five speed, and now it actually is because it’s going in all five gears not just two lol
