Abba was a pop group from Sweden in the 70's... They named the group w/ the first letters from their first names of the 2 couples - (Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny & Anni-Frid) Their contributions to pop music have been massive w/ the records they released from 1972 until 1981 (The group unofficially ended in 1983, years after both couples had split up) Abba recently reunited in 2021 to record a new album 'Voyage', which they say will be their last album.

This was not a backing recording. They played it all on stage The early lyrics had a their odd moments, but they are not native English speakers. In any case, nobody does harmony like Abba. And not a smidge of fancy studio effects.

@@Dave5843-d9m Nobody said anything about 'backing recording'... Yeah Abba weren't the only ones - Scorpions and Accept from Germany sang in English and their accents were noticeable... ABBA was and is a juggernaut. While there is no accurate way to compare record sales thanks to many countries not tracking before the 90s and thanks to new methods like streaming, there are certainly in the top 10 in sales all time. To put it into perspective, their greatest hits album, ABBA GOLD, passed 1000 weeks on the UK's Top 100 album sales charts last summer. For nearly 20 straight years, week in and week out, they have sold the same record in the same country enough to be in the top 100 for weekly sales. That is an insane length of time for any album. And for most of that time, they weren't performing or putting out new material, that was just a steady stream of more people discovering just how great their music is and needing it for themselves. And after all that time, they put out an album last year, Voyage, that of course charted and set sales records, selling 1 million units and 100 million streams in it's first week worldwide. As I said, they're a juggernaut.

For sheer masterclass fo song writing try The Day Before You Came, pur rock and roll the LIVE version of Does Your Mother Know/Hole in Your Soul and for total beauty either Fernando or One Man One Woman. My mom is over 70 now, she set "dancing queen" as the ring tone for years. Until a few years ago I realised they won Eurovision. I checked wiki and found Sweden is the 3rd largest music exporter in the world. In the past, Sweden made me think of blonde, Nobel, Ikea and no sunlight in winters. I really love the 70s disco songs it could go from slow and sexy with Love To Love You (donna summer) and speed right up to You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)(Sylvester), maybe you can react to both of those songs at some point.

"The music is high" has to be one of the most descriptive phrases ever written. Yes it means loud, but it also conveys upbeat, energetic, happy/euphoric - music that when you hear it you can't help but get up and dance. High in terms of drugged really doesn't make sense to apply to music. Musicians maybe so, but music, no.

ABBA's inspiration for "Dancing Queen" was George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby". They also recorded a version of the song "en español". They were the only pop group invited to perform the song, at the Royal Swedish Opera House, the day before the King's (of Sweden) marriage. They also performed the song live on their 1979 North American & European Tour, to a sold-out Wembley Stadium (London), from 5-10 November, which is on DVD. The "idea" for "Dancing Queen" began in 1974. Recording sessions commenced in 1975. Released in 1976, when it topped the charts (Nº 1) worldwide. In 1977, it became ABBA's first and only Nº 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart (April 1977). In the original recording sessions, there was a verse that they decided to leave out of the final recording. It is called the "lost verse".

ABBA is one of the greatest music groups of all time with a catalogue of recognizable hit songs throughout their career that rivals any other group. The two guys wrote and produced every single song they ever recorded. There has been a Broadway Musical ( Mamma Mia ) and two successful feature films based off of their music ( Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again ). The Broadway musical began in 1999 and the two films had a combined budget of roughly $127 million and earned over $1 billion combined with the first film being the more successful. The blond female singer Agnetha was the lead singer for most of their songs and was married to the guitarist Bjorn for several years while the other singer, Anni-Frid did get to be the feature singer in some songs and she was married to the piano player Benny for several years also. Even through their marital troubles and divorces these four stayed friends and performed together. There was never any fighting among the ladies over who got to sing lead more or any of the usual bullshit that plagued bands through the years. The two guys have a unique writing style that has never changed. I greatly enjoy watching reaction videos here on KZbin where young people today discover ABBA's music and how great they were and still are.

There's another one where they're singing not in the concert but like in a small Club singing Dancing Queen you should look at that one as well. On this one that I'm talking about is only about four of them saying

They were huge; in terms of global record sales, they were only beat by the Beatles. Granted, they were bigger in Europe and Australia than here, but we expected our music groups to tour and they didn't do that much.

"Fist time hearing MrLboyd Reacts" (as of now - ABBAS' 'Dancing Queen'), are as exciting as possible can be. I would say, you're joyful, and that's why I'm looking for those moments where you're 'explodingly calm' reacts to the music we all love, one way or the other. Yes, I believe you're _the_ Master in this special realm. You're proving this to me, every time I listen to you, almost giving me chills down the spine! As Oscar Peterson said: "Exclusively for my friends!" I know you're kind of talking to me. Lol. (the bad English - please forgive me.) Greetigs from Sweden, @MrLboyd Reacts!

In 2000, an investment group offered ABBA $1Billion (with a 'B') to reunite for a 100 show world tour. Very few doubt they would have made their money back.

I enjoy your reactions Mr Lloyd but sometimes wonder what songs I must have missed in life as I can’t believe you’ve never heard Dancing Queen. For a different sound try Chiquitita. They donated their royalties of that song to UNICEF which has raised some $ 5 million for that children’s organization.

There probably isn't anyone in Europe, let alone scandinavia or the nordic countries that doesn't know almost all the lyrics to all of their songs. It's been the party music for a good 40, or 50 years here.

@@leifwilhelmsson9113 Nowadays even more so than back then. It's true that Björn was really great at English but if you listen to old interviews, the girls but especially Agnetha always says how much she struggles with English though she learned it in school alongside German and French. All of her English songs she had help translating the lyrics with.

There music was just FUN!.. pure fun and nothing but fun.. Still have very very fond memories! It was al about dancing, and looking good, oh yea, forgive me, about getting LAID! Additional note.. none of the band spoke english well.. but boy did they fake it well! And yes, big orchestral sound it was a thing!

Since you live in Spain, I would suggest their song "Fernando." It is a lament that takes place during that time period.

I can guarantee that Björn and Benny had no thoughts of drugs when they wrote their lyrics. I as a swede have seen ABBA live at a concert back in 1977-1978.

Back when music was about lifting spirits and having a good time instead of putting everyone and everything down, much like the entertainment industry as a whole. Everything has become so politicised and divisive now even the young can't escape and just enjoy that short window of time when there is no real responsibility between late teens and early adulthood and you just want to have fun. I feel sorry for young people today, even at my age now I would rather live back in the 70's/80's because there was just a much better vibe despite there still of course being issues and the world and people being imperfect.

The sold a few Hundred MILLION records In Europe. In the U.S. they were also very big, but not quite as massively huge. Had about six tens including a couple of Number Ones. Winner Takes it All, Fernando, and Waterloo were top tens in the U.S. High meant loud. Their English was not great, and they sang the lyrics Phonetically. True story. Basically the European Beatles. Hard to overestimate how big they were in Europe in the Mid Seventies to mid Eighties. Wonderful harmonies. This song has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows. One of the songs that defined that period of music. Listen to the STUDIO version.
