In 1994 the Beastie Boys released their 4th album "Ill Communication". They released Root Down as a single from that album.

Ill Communication was the start of my love for the Beasties. Was all about Grunge and Punk at that time as a teenager, and then heard Sabotage got this album and it opened me up to Hip Hop.

The groove from this track is sampled from the jazz album "Jimmy Smith Live" (shown briefly in this video). The song they sampled from is actually also called "Root Down".

Richly textured, gritty, funky, informative, masterfully written and performed, with a video that respects the beats, lyrics, and theme, BB's "Root Down" is one of hip-hop's great masterpieces.

The first album “License To Ill” was huge (one of Rick Rubin’s first big productions) and the follow up “Paul’s Boutique” was groundbreaking and amazing and not very popular. They also spent all their money making it. For their third album, “Check Your Head” the went into an isolated band room with guitar, bass, drums, keys, a DJ, and just did their own thing. It had rap, hardcore, and funky psychedelic instrumental grooves with the song “Watcha Want” taking center stage. The album was incredible and cemented them in the mainstream. The tour for that album saw them spending a lot of time playing their instruments live. When “Ill Communication” dropped they were everywhere with Sabotage being a rock monster and they proved that they deserved their accolades across genres. Once you’ve had a chance to really absorb more of their music from the first four albums you should check out the first 15 minutes of their Live in Glasgow set on MTV in 1999. It clearly demonstrates why they had one of the most respected and legendary live stage shows of their era. It starts with Mix Master Mike cutting records and follows with a medley of songs from those albums and it’s crazy good. RIP MCA.

I remember society didn't like rap or heavy metal late 70s, 80s. I went out looking for hip hop clothes trying to breakdance. LOL I wish all kids could experience the 80s. Scares me when I see the difference compared to today. Your videos are great. Keep exploring so it's in your dna.

This is from the same album as Sabatage. I think 1994 their 4th major label release. How about Shadrach its a great song or Professor Booty MCA dissed 3rd Bass. Time for Living, Live at PJs, or Gratitude all from Check Your Head

One of my fave’s! But this isn’t their early stuff, this was ‘94 so it’s kinda “middle Beasties” and they were going for the retro vintage vibe in tribute to the 70s-80s NYC that they grew up in
