I think they didn't put her picture on her album. She worked with Rick James, sounded soulful and had her music played on the black stations, so no one really knew... until she wound up on Soul Train, I guess. LOL!!

I remember very well when it was brand new and on the radio, and I never for a second imagined such a smooth, soulful sound could be coming out of a white dude's mouth, LOL! Didn't discover that Bobby was white until he passed away a few days ago, may he rest in peace.

He is in an exclusive group of musicians that are referred to as Blue-Eyed Soul. This class of musicians included Boz Scaggs, Hall & Oates, Average White Band and others. The old school had a lot of Jazz influence. Boz Scaggs' Dirty Low Down is another perfect example. However, some, like Hall & Oates, wrote for Pop music listeners. Then you had the funksters, like The Average White Band, whose hits are timeless and still compel people to dance. The new school members of this sub-genre would include Sam Smith, Adele, Robin Thicke and the late Amy Winehouse.

Okay - Bobby Caldwell WROTE this song - and played every instrument on it. He also wrote a host of songs for famous Black R&B, Soul and Jazz Artists. He had (obviously) a KILLER set of pipes, and was also a great producer. He toured all over the world (check out his concert in Tokyo - KZbin), and would occasionally drift into other folks' sessions (check out Jon Benet's comments about Bobby doing that on one of his early sessions - and what an influence Bobby was for him). Unlike Michael Bolton, Daryl Hall, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins - and other "blue-eyed soul" artists - he sort of flew under the radar. But the legacy he left was enormous. You were one of the very best there ever was, Bobby - and you will be so incredibly missed.

Back in the 50s when rock started, blues and jazz were the bass of where it sprung. There were a lot of black artists that influenced white artists in rock, country, jazz, etc. Later in the 60s and 70s, we grew up with Motown & R&B on the radio along with all the other artists. It was one big melting pot of music. I watched American Bandstand and Soul Train. The establishment didn't like that Elvis was doing "black" music, but the youth loved it and started a revolution in music. I think that is why a lot of us older people are surprised that younger people have been pigeon holed into staying in their racial lane. It is very alien to me. Music is about the beauty of music and expression. Whatever fits your style and need should be what you do and what you like.

This is a late '70s track, also check out 'Down For The Third Time' by him. The setting in the shadows at the beginning is the cover picture of the album that this was taken from.

Got this in 1978 as a red heartshaped 45 vinyl from the love of my life. After that, I sang it all the time at get togethers, it was perfect for my voice. Now I'm 65, can't sing so well anymore, lost the love of my life in 79, but I still have that 45 safely tucked away in my keepsakes.😊 I loved your delight in this song. Thank you. FYI: So many white bands back in the day, had some surprising soul in their music.
