It doesn't get any better than a song written by Andy Latimer where he plays some of the most melodic guitar you'll ever hear, plus in the middle plays the pipes of pan. Brilliant.

ICE from I Can See Your House From Here is even better for emotional rip your heart ❤️ out guitar. Stationary Traveller is a concept album about 2 lovers one in West Berlin and the other in East Berlin wanting to be with each other but the Wall proves to be the obstacle in their relationship. It’s a story about Communism and Freedom. Camel never forgot they were a Prog band like so many others did.

Man I was just stuck in my building elevator for close to 2 hours all by my lonesome. Although I stayed calm through the ordeal, I could feel my anxiety building. So not in a great mood and came online just to see what my man Justin has in store for us today. I saw the title (which brighten my mood with a smile) and couldn't click on if fast enough. This song was introduced to me, I think by Mr Sidecar Dog (much thanks) about 6 months ago. Since then I've heard it well over 100 times, I loved it so much I needed to know how to play it on the guitar. The more I listen to Camel, the more they remind me of Pink Floyd. Agree Andrew Latimer is definitely an underrated guitarist and is quickly becoming one of favorites. I love the mood this song creates with the guitar and keys, the flute solo was great as well but as you said Justin, it's all about that guitar solo. Just close your eyes and ride along on the melody, so beautiful. I haven't listen to their whole catalog yet, but if you are going to revisit Camel. The song Rajaz from the album Rajaz, is fantastic

I saw Camel a few times in the 80's and 90's, their sound was so perfect you'd think you were wearing headphones, the clarity was astounding. I went to many shows in those times and saw all my favourite bands but only Pink Floyd and Genesis were on equal footing with what I saw with Camel.

You could’ve told me this was a ‘lost‘ track from Floyd’s The Final Cut album or from an Alan Parsons Project album like Vulture Culture or Ammonia Avenue and I would have believed it I enjoyed this - part of a concept album dealing with division of the Berlin Wall The song captures the feel well - exuding hope as well as caution for the ultimate outcome Track stands well on its own but takes on a much deeper meaning when understood within the concept of the album Glad you chose this

Camel, in my opinion, went to a more pop-style after the album Moonmadness. Like Breathless, I Can See Your House From Here and Single Factor were more pop-influenced. After that, they went back to the prog style with much more Andy's guitar solo than before (Dust And Dreams, Harbour Of Tears, etc). I think Stationary Traveller was a good combination of prog and pop. Long Goodbye is another good song in this album. I've waited for more Camel reactions on this channel for a long time. Thank you.

That was excellent, Justin! Beautiful, melodic, inspiring. I first discovered Camel when I bought ‘Mirage’ in 1974. Then I got ‘The Snow Goose’ (I shouldn’t forget the 'Music inspired by...', we don’t want another knock on the door from Paul Gallico!) and Moonmadness. I was playing ‘Mirage’ just yesterday. Sometime in the 80s they just seemed to disappear from view so I can’t recall if I’ve heard ‘Stationary Traveller’ before. I’ve seen them in concert three times and they were always excellent.

There is a great version of this on the live album Pressure Points. In fact Camel were like many 70s bands who really came into their own live. I can recommend the re issued version of Moonmadness, which has also a wonderful concert at Hammersmith in 76. If you listen carefully you can hear me shouting loudly from the fifth row.

Andy Lattimer always stood in the space between David Gilmour and Steve Hackett for me and is most definitely in my top five guitarists. Yes, Camel did keep their prog sound but it changed with the times. This was a great album and so were many others. By this time Andy was very much the leader of the band and his haunting and emotional playing is always a big feature.

Regarding the title & the sense of foreboding tinged with hope. This is from a concept album of the same name. And Camel were damn good at concept albums as they could tell a whole story just using musical moods. The theme is about the Berlin Wall and its erection splitting up many families, lovers etc. After the wall was built many people found that, even though their family may be only a few hundred yards away, they might as well be in living on the far side of the world. Hence the concept of Stationary Travelling. They haven't moved an inch, but they are now of the far side of the world. They are in East Germany, the world of the Stazi. The Stazi are the secret police who might be stood right next to you and you wouldn't know it. Admiration of any Western item, or having an book that hasn't been approved the the political commisars, is liable to get you violently interrogated & thrown into prison. This song forms sort of an interlude on the album. The sense of foreboding is for the Stazi & the whole E.German system where people are made to become paranoid of even closest friends & family members. The vague sense of hope is for the possibility of escaping across the wall to the West. Hope this helps. Read up on the Berlin Wall, then go listen to the whole album and it will all make sense. Musical tastes differ widely but I believe that Camel can carry anyone who is willing to listen through an immersive experience.

I'm a sucker for this type of guitar solos. Similiar to David Gilmour and Gary Moore in my ears. I got my first Camel album with "A Live Record" and after that Moonmadness and Snowgoose, which pretty much is like a reprise of what I had with Live record. But then I got Nude and Stationary Traveller. Both concept albums I really liked a lot too. A different band I think than from the earlier albums. Due in part to Peter Bardens not being in the band anymore. Camel is one of those bands with some great albums and -to me- some less great albums. I don't have all their music, but I did get and absolutely loved Rajaz from 1999. Recommended listening! There are some interesting names on the list of collaborating musicians from the 80's on. Several members from Sky, APP, Roxy Music, Kayak, Fish. All in all a band to keep an eye on if you like emotional guitar solos. Best way is then to get the live albums as the solos are then even longer ;-)

This album seemed to be an attempt to get a little more commercial success and it worked to an extent. The long goodbye got a bit of mainstream radio air time in the UK - One of the few times I've heard Camel played on the radio. They're grossly underrated their album Snow goose is a thing of great beauty. By the way I'm not sure if electronic is your thing but how about doing Kraftwerk, one of the most influential bands of all time. Autobahn or any track from Man machine would be obvious choices. I recommend Computer Love from the album The Mix though.

At this point Camel, like many '70s bands, was pressured for radio friendly material and singles. Nevertheless, there are gems on the later albums. For me, the "Stationary Traveller" songs sound better on the live album, "Pressure Points" (e.g. "Fingertips"). Overall, I think Camel was never the same after Peter Bardens left after "Breathless" - an underrated album. Others argue it was after bassist Doug Ferguson left but I disagree.

Live version is better. Check Out Yes " Madrigal" or Jehtro tull " Elegy" live 1985, IF you like classical influences. Or Peter Gabriel" Here comes THE flood" about global warming. From 1977. Live in Athens 1987 is best!

Whenever girlfriends are involved, music quality suffers and this in such awful pain it's had to invoke a travelling Peruvian pipe band, complete with prerecorded backing track, in a last ditch attempt to save itself. The guitar solo is irrelevant in true Parisien Walkways style.

Sounds are reminiscent of other bands (AP, some PF and Dire Straights vibes in there). Quite enjoyed this, esp. after could not get on board with Snowgoose (OK, but not great). I'd give this a score of "B+", which is the highest I've ever rated a Camel song :)

This is bad camel imo. Check it Song Within a Song, or if you're willing to listen to a concept album, The Snowgoose is legendary (but really must be listened to as an album)

This is not the Camel I like. Good guitar players like Andy Latimer do know how to play well every time, but the song is a bit boring and too sentimental. I like music which doesn't define your mood right away. Sad song - so I feel sad. Happy song - so I feel happy. There has to be more, something that gives space to your emotions. This didn't. Sorry.

The beginning is a rip-off of Private Investigations by Dire Straits!!!!!

Hopefully it was unintentional, but it definitely similar. Since this song came out 2 years after Private Investigations there could have been some influence.
