Charley Pride was a singer, guitarist & professional baseball player. His biggest success came in the 70's. He had 52 top 10 hits on the Country Songs charts. He won many awards & was one of only 3 African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry. He had lots of hits such as "All I Have To Offer You (Is Me)", "(I'm So) Afraid Of Losing You Again", "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me", "I'd Rather Love You", "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone", "Wonder Could I Live There Anymore", "I'm Just Me" etc. Sadly he passed away at the end of 2020.

I forgot he was a pro baseball player! I remember reading about him when I was teenager (Too many years ago to admit, LOL) and that detail completely slipped my mind. He was pretty good too, if I recall, until an injury ended his career! That is when he turned to music, and thank god for that!

Charley Pride is one of the GOATs of country music and by all accounts, despite the prejudices he experienced, he was one of the nicest and generous of spirit people ever in the industry. Over and over people talked about how gracious and kind he was to other artists and his fans. Charley was the first Black superstar country artist, won entertainer of the year. Charley Pride was a staple in every household who listened to country music from the 1960s to the 1980s. The man who introduced him is Marty Stuart, also a Grand Ole Opry member and part of the country music scene for many decades. He was married to Johnny Cash's daughter Cindy for many years and after their divorce he married an older woman who he had had a crush on since his youth, also one of the greats, Connie Smith, who is well worth reacting to also. She could have been as famous as Loretta, Dolly, and Tammy Wynette but chose to leave the industry while she raised her kids.

My Favorite story about this man happened early on in his career. A lady from Texas loved loved loved to listen to him. Her friends tried to tell her he was black but she did not believe him. Mostly, because there were few black country-western singers at that time. Finally he had a concert near her home town and her friends talked her into going (probably not hard to do). When he came out and started singing. She yelled " It's True! It's True" loud enough for everyone in the concert hall to hear her. ;-)
@JackStraw19612 жыл бұрын
My mom, at the last minute, because dad had to work, took an elderly neighbour woman with her to see Charlie (pre 1972), and she hollered out "Nobody told me he was a n****r!", Mom said she wanted to crawl under her seat. This was in Minnesota.
@beegee19602 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this story is true, but heard it as true. When Charlyfirst started, he had made no public appearances and many people had no idea he was black. Before his first appearance his team was concerned about how he would be recieved. He was introduced, walked to the mike and simply said, “Hello, I’m Charly Pride.” The audience exploded in applause and cheers. No one ever worried about it again. Most country music fans don’t worry about color, just about talent.

Seen him Live in KC as the opening act for Buck Owens in the late 60's, then after the show he was sitting on stool on the lobby signing autographs, so kind and soft spoken, he gave us autographs and conversation you wont get from anyone else these days. I will always remember him.....
@michaelfarmer94722 жыл бұрын
Loretta Lynn used to sit for hours after the show to pay attention to her fans. She would talk to fans while holding their hands (my Grandma said Loretta talked to her for 3 minutes, while most only talk to you long enough to sign an autograph and move to the next person), sign autographs and take pictures with everyone who wanted one, and even go as far as...now get this...sing you a song a cappella, if it was a song that wasn't in the show! Plus, if she couldn't remember the words, she would let you sing it to her! She said she had to stop doing that when musicians unionized and it started getting too expensive, but she sure did miss being that close to her fans (she always called them "Friends" because they were always there for her during her good times and bad times). Mr. Pride was always very appreciative of his fans, too. Celebrities like that (especially the ones that came up in poverty) ALWAYS remember, no matter how long they've been a star, that they would never had made it if people wouldn't buy their records. Charley started poor and had a net worth at his death of $40Million. Loretta started poor and at her death had a net worth of $65Million. Yet, they both stayed genuinely grounded, always remembered where they came from, and always remembered no matter how hard they worked, it was their fans who put them there. May they Rest In Peace.

I think you mean Seven Spanish Angels, and yeah, that is one of my favorites! I like Charley's version of Kaw-Liga better than Hank's.

Charley Pride and Don Williams were cut from the same cloth. Handsome quiet me with smooth silky voices. They done sad breakup songs about what they thought life would be like without the wonen they lived; but when they sang a song about live and being faithful, you felt it and you believed EVERY word! They gave us hope for love! Ronnie Milsap had a different type of voice but he is another legend that had that same effect on me. When you lusten to them, you just know they live every word.
