The song talks about youth, the traumas and scars we have in that period. I don't know if you've reasoned at this point, but Madonna always brings in her songs teachings and knowledge that she acquired in her life, as well as things that society keeps secret (get it?) to keep these traumas for generations.

The film is called "At Close Range." It's a stunning film based on a true life crime story. Chris Walken, Sean Penn and Mary Stuart Masterson are amazing in it. Every scene is like a work of art a sublime piece of cinematography. It's very sad but brilliant, i love it and would give it 4 1/2 out of 5. It's a cult classic and the theme song melody is played all throughout the movie to give the film a terrific atmosphere.

This is the song that proved Madonna as the multifaceted talent she is. In fact some of my favorite Madonna songs are her ballads. This is one of her best. When and if you get around to watching her live performances, her performance of Live to Tell on the Confessions Tour in 2005 is Fire.

This very beautiful song was written for "At close range". Sean Penn was her husband at the time and had a lead part in the movie. A classic Madonna ballad with all kinds of layers to both the movie and her own life. She originally didn't want to sing it, but her musical partner in crime at the time Pat Leonard convinced her. He didn't think anybody else should sing that song after hearing her do it. In the movie Walken is Penn's criminal father and Penn is the naive son who thinks he can get a quick buck without the risk, basically. Life with dear ol' dad is not as fun as he thought.

Don't get distracted by the film aspect and trying to figure out "the secret". The song remains a classic because of the ambiguity. It's an almost universal idea and can apply to so many different situations. That's how it makes such an impact on so many people for so long.

Memory lane early 1986. When this charted Madonna was still charting with 'Dress you up". This song marked a huge change in her music and a transformtion lookwise. This song was a total surprise. It was like forever at #2 but finally it reached #1 just when "Papa don't preach" started to chart and reached #1 too....back 2 back.

FILM: At Close Range SONG WRITER: Patrick Leonard It was originally written for another movie but it got rejected. Later on, on that same day, Madonna told Patrick about this film Sean was working on, and asked to listen to the song. Patrick met with Madonna, Sean Penn and the producer of the movie. The producer liked it and then Patrick Leonard convinced Madonna to sing it. According to Patrick Leonard Madonna recorded this song in only ONE TAKE.

This is the first song of Madonna I heard. I remember it as if it happened yersterday. I was 9 and was playing hide and seek with my friends at their place. Suddenly their uncle came in with a friend. They were very excited cause they had bought the type of "the girl of the moment" as they called her. They started to listen to it and at a certain moment they got to live to tell and I stopped playing with my friends. The whole world disappeared. I went to the kitchen where they were listening to the album and stood there. I kept listening to the rest of the album but I just felt in love with that song and begged them to listen to it again. They looked at me like being pissed off but accepted anyway (those days you had to rewind it) once again everything just dissappeared. At that moment I felt in love with her music and that love continues until today

The song can have many meanings for many people but I think she wrote in from the perspective of an aids patient. Her best friend had aids and died during this time. Many kept it hidden well. And many couldn’t live to tell.
