This song makes me think of a woman I used to wait on in my early food service days. She struggled with schizophrenia and always asked for a table in my section. She tipped me very well and I wasn't sure exactly why till the day she said, while leaving: "Thanks for treating me like a person and not just rolling your eyes like most everybody else." I can still see her sad, gentle eyes these 43 years later. 😥

"This is a song about me," lead singer Adam Duritz said of this song on Counting Crows VH1 Storytellers appearance. Said Duritz: "The song begins with a guy walking out the front door of his house and leaving behind this woman. But the more he begins to leave people behind in his life, the more he feels like he's leaving leaving himself behind as well, and the less substantial he feels about himself. That's sort of what the song's about: even as he disappears from the lives of people, he's disappearing more and more from his own life."

Great music, and always brings up good memories of at least one friend gone too soon.

Adam uses “Maria” as a stand in for an imaginary female version of himself, especially in August and Everything After. He was diagnosed with a dissociative disorder (he often feels disconnected from the world) and that fuels his really deep introspection. August is among my all time favorite albums. Highly recommend the album as well as Recovering the Satellites and This Desert Life.

I love the Counting Crows. I highly recommend thier Lp August and Everything after, Hard Candy and Desert life. Singers nane is Adam Duritz. Hes such a unique voice and way of song writing. In 90s - early 2000s I devoured them. Alas, as you grow & change other music replaced them. Theyre on my top 20 list.

Love you. This whole album means so much to me. It isn’t a happy song. For me it reminds me of my 20s with different groups of friends. We were all trying to find our way. Some never grew or changed. I had to move on. Unfortunately in my early 30s married a guy who was uncalled of change or growth. Or empathy. Or fidelity. Haha. Happily married now but it took me 49 years to get where I needed to me. “Murder of One” of this same album was no is my mantra.

One of the things my parents almost always did when they got home from work (after making sure my brother & I hadn’t burned anything down) was to make some coffee, go to the living room & talk with each other for around an hr. This was after their 30 minute ride home together on most days. It’s always stuck with me how much effort they put into keeping their marriage good. Being an absolutely horrible teen, I’m sure a lot of that time was spent discussing what to do with me, which I still feel guilty about all these years later.
