Hey guys. Craig's 19 year old son was away with friends on a river tubing trip and was drowned. Craig wrote this to help himself deal with it. He recorded it and then said he wasn't going to sing it again. A couple of his Nashville buddies told him he could help a lot of people with it. Then the audiences started asking for it at his concerts. So he started doing it again. I have seen him do it on several TV shows and also on the Grand Ole Opry. I have never seen him get through it without breaking down a little bit. In fact there is a video on KZbin of him doing it at the Opry and the entire song the guys in his band are just watching him to make sure he is okay. That's family. Craig is quite a guy. He served I think 8 years in the army as a combat medic. After he got out him and one of his kids were driving somewhere and they drove by a house fire. He ran up to see if he could help. The FD wasn't there yet and someone said there were still people in the house. He went in and carried 2 people out. (Kids I think). He has another video you should check out. Great message for the times we are going through now. It's called "This ain't nothin'. Stay safe and well. Peace.

It's true that it does help others that are going through the same thing. I lost my son to a motorcycle accident three years ago on 09/21 and though I don't wish anyone to join this club I unwillingly became a member of, it helps to know there are others who understand.

Just a minor correction. And please don't misunderstand my comments as being hostile. I admire Craig and tear up every time I see his video. Craig served with the Army's 101st and 82 Airborne. He tried out for the Rangers but was injured in the selection process and didn't make it. Regardless, I very much appreciate his service.

To add another amazing quality to Craig & his wife....this son that he is referring to was a child that they adopted at a fairly young age. Gerry came home from college for the break and told his Mom that he broke his chain that he wore with the Saint Michael pendant on it and he would like to get a new chain bc he felt it's security. His Mom hadn't yet made it to the jewelry store to get a chain and now she holds some "what if" type guilt. Was so sad to see the pain in their faces as they gave that interview on one of the tv talk shows.

I worked for a woman looking after her horses and cows. She had a wretched old pool. My youngest son would go with me to work. He was not even three. I went to tell my employer I was done and she kept talking and talking. Found my boy floating in the pool, not breathing no heartbeat. I pulled him out, started working on him and God blessed me. He started making little sounds, I thought it was his body outgassing and he was gone but he started to breath, opened his eyes. The paramedics had a hard time finding us but after 45 minutes they arrived. Took us to the hospital. Nurses kept telling me I'd done everything right. All I could think was if I'd done every thing right we wouldn't be there. Spent the day in the NICU with my beautiful boy bouncing around, chattering and laughing. I apologized to the nurses for the ruckus, they told me it was wonderful to see a little one who was going to be OK. He's an engineer and engaged now. I thank God daily for letting me keep him.

The first time he performed it was on the Grand Ole Opry . As he walked off the stage Ricky Skaggs was standing there and Craig said, I can perform that song again. Ricky told him he had to so he would help others. He contacted Blake Shelton and Blake started having it played everywhere even on Kelly who of course was crying. Blake showed up to surprise him. When I was a Soldier stationed at Fort Sill, Craig Morgan with Jason Aldean and Dirks Bentley performed a concert on the 4th of July for the troops. It was a part of the Army concert tour. Me and my friend Erin had been at the lake all day and missed the concert. Afterwards, we went to our favorite little hole in the wall bar called Guys & Dolls. After an hour or so, me Erin and one other person was in the bar, when about 15 people came in. It happened to be Jason Aldean, Dirks Bentley, some of their entourage and of course Craig Morgan. I sat closest to Jason Aldean and Craig sat on the opposite end. After exchanging pleasantries, Craig Morgan heard that I was in the Army and that we had served in the same unit once upon a time. They stayed for about 2 hours and me and Erin danced to their songs while they say at the bar, it was so surreal. Craig even bought me a shot of Jack. It was when we still had flip phones....it was amazing and he was such a down to earth guy

Loss of a child transcends all pain a parent can experience. It's not natural for a parent to bury a child. The love for a child is greater than any other emotion a person can feel. I was blessed to watch my son being born and I thank God every day he is with me. My wife had to bury her only child, my step son , at the young age of 24. This song especially the second verse is her. It's been 5 years and I have watched her in a pain that nothing can ease. It doesnt matter your sex, race, age whatever, love bonds all of us together and death may take the physical body but the memories are with us forever. Love your children, hold them tight and never take them or their lives for granted. You just never know what fate has in store. God bless you and your channel. Toodles

We met in Germany for a day as I rotated home and he deployed to Afghanistan. This morning I was listening to this song and pulled down his Bible. In the inside he had written " one day I will tell my dad he's my hero". My son is my hero. The pistol is now packed away and the bottle of whiskey has been poured out. The Bible sits on the mantle alone now. God I miss my son.

The Uncle Sam he is talking about is the military not IRS. They have set up a little shop there in town that sells all home made things and I am pretty sure the sales have some of the proceeds going to help others. Y’all really need to watch the Kelly Clarkson show where she interviews him and then he sings this song but also go to Blake Shelton and look up where he asked everyone to vote for this song instead of one of his own songs that was dominating the play lists at the time.

I tell them Karen's not feeling well So I probably shouldn't go out Besides I've gotta fix a list of things I need to do around the house Then I hang up the phone Turn the radio back on, and sit back down I know my boy ain't here but he ain't gone In the mornings I wake up, give her a kiss, head to the kitchen Pour a cup of wake-me-up and try to rouse up some ambition Go outside, sit by myself but I ain't alone I've got the Father, my son, and the Holy Ghost I've been beat up I been pushed and shoved But never ever really knocked down Between mom and dad, Uncle Sam and friends I somehow always pulled out But the pain of this was more Than I'd ever felt before, yeah I was broke I cried and cried and cried Until I passed out on the floor Then I prayed and prayed and prayed Till I thought I couldn't pray anymore And minute by minute, day by day My God, He gave me hope I know my boy ain't here but he ain't gone In the mornings I wake up, give her a kiss, head to the kitchen Pour a cup of wake-me-up and try to rouse up some ambition Go outside, sit by myself but I ain't alone See, I've got the Father, my son, and the Holy Ghost I hope, I love, I pray, I cry I heal a little more each day inside I won't completely heal till I go home In the mornings I wake up, give her a kiss, head to the kitchen Pour a cup of wake-me-up and try to rouse up some ambition Go outside, sit by myself but I ain't alone I've got the Father, my son, and the Holy Ghost One day I'll wake up and I'll be home With the Father, my son, and the Holy Ghost

He wrote it right after his son died. There are stories about it. I listened to it a lot after I lost my son.

The lyrics here are very simple but sometimes simple can be the most effective. When I hear this song, I can picture him putting down the phone and going back to his pain. I can picture him getting up at 5am and making coffee. He's obviously in a ton of pain but I've heard him interviewed and he's used it for a purpose and learned to rely on God more. And I'm sure God's used his story to inspire others giving them an example how to handle loss. The live version really gives me them eye allergies for sure

Craig Morgan is for sure a great person!!! His son died in a boating accident. Watch him on Kelly Clarkson. Live video. Such an amazing man. Honestly thats the video you need to watch....

Yes it is a true story. Craig was a special ops soldier and felt with a lot of pain before he got into country music. He lost his son and it broke him. Depression is what kept him home. His wife being sick was a lie to cover his depression. The pain of a parent who has to bury a child. That makes this song even more beautiful

Craig is a veteran. He was an Army artillery FO (forward observer). That's what he meant by the reference to Uncle Sam.

Yes he did. He wrote this song after his son died. He sang it on the Grand Ole Opry, he was never going to sing it again, but his friends convinced him to record it. Said other people would need that song.

Yes, it's a true story and if you don't shed a tear for Craig you are not human! I cry every time I hear this song and I am crying right now as I write these words. I have two children and they are the world to me and I don't ever want to bury my children. Godspeed....-Recent high-school graduate went missing Sunday following a tubing excursion on a Tennessee lake - www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/craig-morgans-son-jerry-greer-dead-at-19-in-boating-accident-173944/

My daughter would of been 30 years old this past October. I lost her when she was 4 months old. I know what Craig went through. Craig is an awesome guy. Very sorry his son passed away. Eric Clapton's son died 7 days after my daughter. Eric wrote "Tears In Heaven" because of it. Tom Dutkiewicz

True story. His son Jerry was killed in a boating accident about 4 years ago. He says he sees signs all the time from Jerry...example, climbing out of the truck and looked down and saw (I think) 13 cents on the ground...was Jerry’s jersey number in high school. When he refers to Uncle Sam he’s talking about his time in the military. xx Love Craig Morgan.
