Paul Simon wrote it and says this is his favorite cover of it. Disturbed caught a lot of grief for doing this cover because it is a hard rock band. This performance is one of the most powerful versions of the song out there. If you listen to the Simon and Garfunkel original and then this one even though they are word for word the same, they are very different interpretations.

Lynn, as a very old man music aficionado I have to agree with you when you called out Mugnify, as this being the original. But, and this is a very Big But, when Disturbed released their Epic Version of Simon and Garfunkle's classic social commentary '60's song it was Paul Simon himself that came out and admitted they had produced a Really Exceptional Heavy Metal Rendition of what was an acoustically performed song. Paul was really blown away by David Drainman's powerful vocals and the depth of the instrumental arrangement.

I've seen other reactions where people have legit cried during and after watching this music video. According to Dave Draiman (lead singer), the original idea was for Disturbed to make it all huge and angry like they usually do, but their guitarist suggested doing the opposite, and it paid off in a BIG way. People like to say Simon and Garfunkel (original singers back in the 60s) made this song as a warning, and Disturbed's version is in anger that the warning wasn't heeded.

No, No, you are tragically misinformed. David was NOT classically trained. He was trained as a Cantor in his Jewish high school (who agreed with him that they should part ways), NOT a seminary, and singing cantor is NOT classical. Cantor is singing a prayer. Classical is a genre written in Europe around 1750 to 1830 whereas cantors officially started in the 7th century. (although singing prayers was something very ancient for jews)

To me, Simon and Garfunkel's original song was like a gentle admonition for people to come together and not let ourselves be cut off or divided from one another by technology and differing views. This is, by far, one of the deepest version of the song I've ever heard. The singer digs from deep down, almost painfully, to make the lyrics resonate! There's no way that you are going to ignore the message! It seems to be somewhat of a challenge (throwing down the gauntlet, as it were) for people to learn to communicate. The imagery of the instruments on one side of the river and the lyrics and people on the other is intense. For the music to happen, the river must be crossed by both to come together and make the song. COMMUNICATION!

Simon revealed that the original piece was actually about his friend from Columbia University, who's vision blurred while watching a baseball game. He was misdiagnosed and his optic nerve slowly lost function completely. He then left the university all depressed, and Paul Simon willed him back to school, promising to be his guide around campus, and adopted the nickname "darkness" by his blind friend. The way the blind friend greeted Simon was by saying "Hello, darkness, my old friend"

David Draiman's voice is so unique. Before he got into Heavy Metal as a singer, he was training to be a Cantor and had thoughts of being a Rabbi. That is how he is able to use his voice and vocal cords the way he does. He was also classically trained. Simon and Garfunkle love this version of The Sound of Silence. Their version was the "warning" to us all, and Disturbed's version is the anger that people didn't listen to it.
@donnaknudson7296

I think that because of the variation in the ways he learned to sing and was trained, that he is able to communicate so many shades and intensities with his voice. That and that he has such emotional depth. It's what allows this piece to be so powerful. The long slow crescendo from beginning to end carries it along perfectly. I'm incapable of listening to this without crying. It gets me every time.

When Simon and Garfunkel first wrote and recorded this song way back in 1964, it was less intense - a gentler admonition to my generation to pay attention to what was going on in the world around us. Disturbed's version is how much stronger the song *needs* to be now. The gentle warning about lack of empathy and communication in pursuit of the "neon gods" has gone so much further with the advent of electronics, and needs a voice to thunder this warning. Cell phones, tablets, social media "influencers", and the programming we see in everyday life have created a world where, even on crowded public transit, many of the young are so wrapped up in their phones that they have ceased to see the old person, the pregnant woman, the man on crutches - those who are really need a place to sit. Other people have become invisible and inaudible as the young sit, earbuds in and heads bowed to their "electronic gods". And sad to say, I have sincere doubts that even if they hear this song, they are even capable of actually listening to it. David's voice is a voice we need to broadcast from every subway wall...

This version makes my hairs stand on end. This was written in the 60's and it was forecasting what we are seeing now. "Worshipping the neon gods we made". It is speaking of the celebrity culture that was to be, and has been created. They have more influence than their collective intelligence deserves. A celebrity says something and it is almost gospel. The urgency sung in this, conveys the 'last chance saloon' we are all living in.

This song speaks to me on an even deeper level than I have seen mentioned in these comments. It is not so much about the communication but getting a message delivered. It is about the thousands (the masses) staying silent when they know that something needs to be said. Allowing injustices to continue, looking the other way, moving along with a status quo that they know to be wrong. Deep down this song is a call to action for those who are standing idly by and not standing up for what they believe is right.

Honestly you should have heard the original first. This is not the original. That being said, this is an AMAZING cover of the original 1964 Simon and Garfunkel song "Sound of Silence" and in my opinion it's more in line with what Paul Simon envisioned when he wrote the song. Simon and Garfunkel was a folk band and they were 'encouraged' to stick to that folk 'sound' by their producers for this song. Just over fifty years later, Paul Simon watched Disturbed's version live on The Conan O'Brien Show and took the time to e-mail David Draiman (Disturbed's vocalist) directly, calling his performance "powerful". Paul Simon went on to share Disturbed's Conan performance on his social media as a "must watch". Could there be any higher honor for a cover than this? The man who wrote the song suggested this cover to his fans, as something they needed to watch and listen to.

I loved your reaction to this cover, so much symbolism in this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul. This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones. "Neon light that split the night", I remember when neon light would turn on there would be a crackling sound thus touched the sound of silence. Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have.

this is about people forgetting how to communicate because they are too busy watching tv. instead of having personal interactions they're sitting at home alone with their "Neon God" the tv listening to it's one- way conversation. It was a warning.

You are correct about the chasm between the music and the instruments. Music and instruments break the sound of silence. This definitely is a statement about the US today. Trump and company are the Neon Gods we made. Silence is this cancer that has grown. The words of the props are all around - the homeless, the graffiti, and the hopelessness.

THIS IS THE COVER!!!! THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL!! VERY GOOD BUT DIFFERENT! THE WRITERS AND ORIGINAL SINGERS OF THIS SONG WAS A DUO CALLED: "Simon & Garfunkel" A very folksy, harmony driven group. Their voices are amazing and together in harmonies, they almost become 1 voice because their voices blended so well! They had many hits on top of this song,,,,, they had "Bridge over Troubled water" and "Mrs. Robinson" to name a view. Check them out

I appreciate that you paid attention to the imagery. A lot of people miss the meaning of the boat bringing the instruments to the people so that their songs (voices) could be heard.

You missed it. Listen to it first, no comment. Let the words sink in. Singer starts slow and builds to very nearly a rage., controlled anger. The words don't necessarily have to mean anything, this is all in the delivery and how it physically effects you. It is like a poem. I get the chills everytime I hear it. There are so many great songs and groups out there for the past 50 years that you have never heard. Keep listening please.

the singer was trained classically as a cantor, a Jewish singer who performs ritual music. Paul Simon is a poet. He and Garfunkle are highly educated people. This is important because of the richness of cultural references people like them bring to their music. You can see this richness also in Queen. You might be aware that all of them are college-educated (Brian May has a PhD in Astrophysics).

What I especially loved was after finding this out that not was he a Cantor but comes from a generational line of them. He also chose to have 0 tattoos out of respect, not just because he didn't want them but out of respect for his heritage but for respect his grandfather but he even removes his piercings when sees them! So not only does he have this amazing instrument but is humble and respectful to his family, If you watch the live on Conan, David had been in the hospital the night before. When he went on Conan, he was still very ill I'ts why he had to sit to perform. Think it's better than studio version!

In the video, silence is created when there is a divide (sea) exists between those that write music and those that play music. If you don't have both, then all you have is silence. Now, originally the song was intended to show a divide in personal communication. In the 1960's when the song was originally written, the Neon Light (television & pop culture) was the divide between people having conversations. People stopped talking to one another at dinner tables and instead watched TV while they ate is an example of this phenomenon. Nowadays, cellphones/tablets/internet can be seen as the divide in personal communication.

as im sure others have said this is a cover of a song by simon & Garfunkel from the 1960s personally i find Disturbed's version MUCH BETTER then the original. but what is truly amazing about this song is the fact that its message & meaning is just as powerful today as it was back when the original came out.

To young folk this rendition may seem like the first. And even the old man that I am, I respect and admire...hell I LOVE this version. I'm a rocker at heart. Disturbed is Rock and Roll to the core. Agree with Wes in that it's a totally different take on the lyrics than Simon and Garfunkel's original. But...we have to giveit up to the OGS. These guys are the originals. My favorite is (forgive me Mug) the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame version of three touching songs by Simon and Garfunkel. Mug, do yourself a favor...hell, do ALL OF US a favor and do a reaction to the entire contribution of S & G from this link. You will love it, you will rock out, and if you have a heart in your chest... you will cry. It's twenty minutes of your life that you will never regret spending. I mean for me? It's about a good two hours if I add up the total number of times I've watched/listed to it. If you do a reaction, just know it's about twenty total minutes and three songs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5TKc5qkidCheq8

Young man, you need to do your homework. Simon and Garfunkle wrote this song back in the mid 60's so they get credit for the lyrics. Disturbed took it to a whole new level and did the best cover of a song I ever heard. An outstanding performance when you consider the fact they are a heavy metal band.

Simon and Garfunkel wrote and performed this song originally so if you're going to listen to the original first I suggest you look up Simon and Garfunkel. And just for the record this song is about the Advent of the television and how it was perceived that people would no longer speak to each other once the television was invented and popularized.

A quiet voice is an unheard voice. A just voice can only be heard and understood by the just. The sound of silence are the people who fear to cry out about what has happened. Who for what ever reason cannot speak out about the injustice that they see and deal with everyday. I am just a very old and white lady but the song rang true because of my father. I think it is time that we all stopped bowing our heads and raised our voice.

The original is about the separation of humanity from humanity. Since music videos didn't exist then, the visual of having what appears to be an instrument graveyard separated from the people and then coming back together at the end is even more powerful to bring that message forward.

I agree, the lyrics are dark like Poe. Great comparison. Your interpretation, even not knowing the back story of the original of the '60s is spot on! Excellent! David Draiman's voice is classically trained but he's a huge hard metal rock singer! Talk about a dichotomy of genres!

Would love to see your reaction to Led Zeppelin. I'm not sure if you have ever listened to their music, but they are very diverse. Robert Plant, the lead singer, has an incredible voice. They are Rock God's that also touch you with blues and soul...best song to start with is "Since I've been loving you "! and of course "Stairway to Heaven"..the audio version of Stairway is better to start with than the live version, although the live is fire!!
