Clive Langer hasn't even nearly gotten the praise he deserves for writing this amazing melody. (I have no idea if Costello's lyrics or the music was written first. Anyone out there who knows?) He's mostly known as a producer (primarily for Madness), but this sure makes you yearn for all the songs he could've written, had he wanted to (or, possibly, the ones he's still keeping locked in his drawers and hasn't shown the world yet. Get 'em out, Clive!)

Beautiful song, absolutely beautiful, and it hit like a hammer politically at the time, the Falklands War was a very big deal in Britain in the 80s, very big. This was covered by Robert Wyatt, British singer who had a minor hit with it, his voice suits it very well and worth checking.

Was going to say, was about the Falklands Conflict. From a time when some music could mean something important, alongside bubblegum pop. The Jam, the Specials, the Clash, the Stranglers and many more.

My favorite of his ballads. But his ballads are generally my least favorite of his songs, with this exception.
