Clapton was walking to the apartment to visit and came upon the commotion not knowing. Conner was 4 when the housekeeper forgot she left the floor to ceiling window open Conner was running around in the Apartment and went out the 53 floor window in New York City. RIP Conner Clapton.Eric had a hard time writing this song, and the first few times he sang it live Eric Clapton was very emotional and cried, and so did the whole audience .

While touring the US in 1977, lead vocalist Robert Plant received a call from back home in the UK that his 5 year old son Karac was sick with a stomach virus. Sadly, Karac died from the virus and Led Zeppelin cancelled the remainder of the tour. Robert Plant wrote "All Of My Love" in honor of his son.

Eric Clapton live through 2 agonizing tragedies in the span of 6 months. On August 27, 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was touring with Eric Clapton. After a gig in Wisconsin that night, Stevie Ray was killed in a helicopter crash as it traveled from the concert venue back to the hotel where the bands were staying. On March 20, 1991, Clapton's son Conor died after he fell out of a window on the 49th floor of the building where he lived in NYC. I'm not sure how Eric Clapton even managed to carry on after two gut punches like that.

The song is a tribute to love’s lasting powers and a lament for the death of Clapton’s four-year-old son, Conor, who died on 20 March 1991 when he accidentally slipped from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment building. Clapton, who was elsewhere in New York when the tragedy happened, had the horrific task of making the identification at Lennox Hill Hospital’s mortuary. “I remember looking at his beautiful face in repose and thinking, This isn’t my son. It looks a bit like him, but he’s gone,” the former Cream star said later. The world-famous guitarist and his Italian actress girlfriend, Lory Del Santo, flew their son’s body back to England to be buried at Clapton’s hometown church, St Mary Magdalen, in Ripley, Surrey. The mourners included Phil Collins. Prince Charles sent a letter of condolence.
