Live Aid was a massive fund raising concert for the famine in Ethiopia. Many many bands played that day in Wembley Stadium London and in Philidelphia USA. All bands/artists had 15/20 minute slots. Queen did a 20 min slot and then came back later that night to perform the closing song. Freddie’s vocals fantastic however, he had laryngitis and was told by his doctor that he shouldn’t perform. What a legend ⭐️ you should watch the full Queen Live Aid set

No matter who you are, how rich, how poor - no matter what you do, we’re all gonna die when the “Hammer falls”. Brian May (that killer guitarist) wrote that "Hammer to Fall is really about life and death, and being aware of death as being part of life", and that "the Hammer coming down is only a symbol of the Grim Reaper doing his job!" Kick-arse song from a band that could not be tied to one genre. The Live Aid concert was an incredible event - the first of its kind, to gather the royalty of rock and pop in the UK and the US (concerts were run simultaneously in Wembley Stadium, London (72,000 people present) and Philadelphia (over 80,000 people) and broadcast live across the world to an audience of 1.8-1.9 billion people! Other countries held smaller events that tied in to the live show too, but London and Philly were the main shows. I watched it live in Australia - I was (and obviously still am) a massive Queen super-fan. Their 20-ish minute segment has been voted as the best Rock ‘n’ Roll performance of the 20th century. It was timed perfectly to stop on the red light too (which indicated their time was up). You may notice, if you watch the full concert as I strongly recommend you do, that on the final downward swing of Freddie’s for the last not of their main set, that the light turns from a flashing warning orange to red. That was the end of their time on stage. All the artists backstage were aware they’d stolen the show too! It reinvigorated Queen as a band and had them back in the studio immediately after. It solidified their place in the annals of rock’n’roll history as legends and a band that could stand the test of time. Watching them and observing their ground breaking journey is a masterclass in risk, talent, incredible intelligence and sheer balls! Don’t break Live Aid up into segments, play it all in one hit to maintain the continuity and witness the intense energy and flow of the performance. You won’t even notice the length of the video. If you watch Chief Mouse’s cleaned up version on KZbin, you’ll see it as I did in 1985. Best version online with perfectly selected hits and a performance you’ll never see the likes of again. Freddie was a magician and held the crowd, and the world, transfixed in the palm of his hand. He confessed later that he felt a little intimidated by the left of power he realised he wielded at that moment. Bob Geldorf said that Live Aid was made for Freddie. Despite a throat infection and under instructions from his doctor, he still performed. Don’t stop the video too soon though or you’ll miss out on the extra performance Freddie and Brian did later in the evening. It’s sheer perfection!

The song has two different meanings, it is about death that is coming for everyone. And it is about the Cold War, this was during the height of the Cold War. He refers to living in the shadow of the mushroom cloud (nuclear weapons). "Just surrender and it won't hurt at all." The hammer is part of communist flag - the hammer and sickle. Fun reaction!

Hammer to Fall was written by Brian May and is basically about death. It isn't about fighting/resisting, it's about the inevitability of death for everyone ("what the hell we fighting for, just surrender and it won't hurt at all").

@@gipsnadel6418 It only references that era. They were not only the best band on that memorable day, but also the loudest. The sound system volume was regulated, but they had their guy get in and kick it up a notch for their performance. They were so well-known for their elaborate stage set-up and lighting, (called the "pizza oven") that some people thought they couldn't put on much of a show on the bare-bones stage without all their usual trappings. They sure proved those doubters wrong! All the band members were educated. Freddie had an art college diploma in graphic design, and designed the Queen crest. Roger Taylor got his degree in biology after becoming bored with the study of dentistry. Dr. Brian May has a PhD in astrophysics. His thesis had to do with the movement of cosmic dust particles in the zodiacal cloud. Indeed. John Deacon has an honors degree in electrical engineering, and built the "Deaky amp" that helps to achieve Brian May's unique sound on guitar.

But let me tell you they never got to perfom this live with Freddie becouse it was end of the 80's when he was sick already. You also could listen to the 2014 live in Japan Queen (left band members Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on Drums) + Adam lambert. This was the best ever live performace of this song and they fullfilled Freddies last wish "The Show Must Go On". The other dudes show till now that they can rock as ever before and didnt get a bit tired and they honor Freddie at every concert and add him in video sequences, what makes everyone to see Freddie live again - even if he is away for 28 years mow. Just for that i love the guys. Look at it. Qeen + Adam Lambert live 2014 Japan I Want it all. Best performance ever since Fred has left and i feel him around at this event and saying "WOOOW darlings this is fucking heaven on earth" espeacially Brians guitar skills are amazing! I think even better then ever before, becouse he got more and more skills over the years and still uses his hand (own-) build guitar since 1967!!!

Live Aid was a duel-venue worldwide concert to raise money for the Ethiopian famine. It was organized by Bob Geldorf. It was in Wembley Stadium in London (72,000) and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (100,000) with satellite hookups boosting the total number of people watching Live Aid to about 1.5 Billion in 150 countries. There was something close to 68 different performing acts between the different venues. It opened around noon London time (7 AM Philly) and Philadelphia opened around 5 hours later. The concert lasted around 16 hours. It raised over $125 million (in 1985 money) for famine aid. In both London and Philly, every act used the same stage set-up. No special lights or use of a smoke-machine (something Queen concerts were known for). The drums were set up on a revolving platform so they could set up the drums backstage for the next act while the current one was performing. There HUGE tv screens at both venues so all of the acts in London could be seen by the Philly fans and vice versa. People at home and in bars all over the world watched on their TV's. Each act was allotted 20 minutes. There were lights at the front of the stage that were green/yellow/red to warn the performers if they were ok (green), or were nearing the end of their allotment (yellow). If it went Red, supposedly the sound would be shut off. Unlike most of the performers, Queen took the gig very seriously. The put together a special show line-up and rehearsed for a week before the venue. It showed! When Queen began to perform, backstage was chaotic (as one would expect with so many rockstar egos) but as they heard the audience reaction to Queen's performance (everyone started singing along with Bohemian Rhapsody), it got quiet. They all started migrating to the wings to listen. When the audience began clapping and singing along on Radio Gaga, the word went around to all of the other performers, "Damn it, Queen is stealing the show!" You should watch the whole performance including Freddie and Brian's duo performance of "Is This the World We Created?" in the finale that took place around 3 hours after Queen finished their performance. Queen performance at Live Aid is considered the BEST live performance by a rock band ever!

Live Aid was a charity 16 hour concert in London featuring all the top bands of the day in 1985. It was also in Philadelphia PA. Each group had a 17 minute slot. It was televised around the WORLD with an estimated 1.4 BILLION people watching. Queen stole the show. Their performance at Live Aid is in the history books as the Best live rock and roll performance in history. Live Aid raised millions of dollars for the starving people in Ethiopia. You trying to guess what a song is about is so funny. You are way off. Brian (lead guitar), wrote the song after thinking about the Cuban Missile crises and the possibility of a nuclear bomb, which is in the reference to the line “mushroom cloud”. Live Aid in London was held in Wembley stadium and there were 72,000 people there. There were 90,000 people in Philadelphia. When a band finished their 17 minute slot in London a band would start their slot in the USA to give the next group time to set up in the other country. None of the bands were able to do sound checks or test equipment. It was a bare minimum stage with no fancy lights or equipment. Pure talent was center stage. You need to react to Queens History making Live Aid set. It’s amazing. It wasn’t even a Queen audience, but Freddie had them in the palm of his hand immediately after hitting the stage. Please try to keep your finger off the “pause” button. You constantly stop the videos.

I know listening without headphones, speakers blaring can be wild but you miss so much that headphones can zero in on. Please react to Queen - White Queen (A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975). This was a live performance that was televised on Christmas Eve in England. You'll notice that Freddie begins the song holding a glass of champagne. Queen had just made a holiday toast to the audience and then went into the song. Freddie's voice was exceptionally amazing performing this song. Brian May's guitar skills were excellent. Roger on drums and John Deacon's bass rounded out this musical gem that night. What you have to listen to is when the piano and guitar playing are playing off each other almost like they're responding to each other, there's just so much passion, angst and drama. When Freddie gets up from the piano, look at Mercury wings on Freddie's pants.

That last verse hits HARD: "We who grew up tall and proud In the shadow of the mushroom cloud At least our voices can be heard We just wanna scream louder and louder AND LOUDER 'WHAT THE HELL WE FIGHTING FOR?' Just surrender and it won't hurt at all. Just got time to say your prayers Then it's time for the hammer to fall!" Those of us who grew up in the Cold War were told every day that we were in a life-or-death struggle with what Reagan called the Evil Empire, and that if we lost, then the ENTIRE WORLD was DOOMED, but the weapons that war would be fought with were the ones that would destroy everyone and everything. We knew that if either side launched their arsenal, we would all die, and that awareness that everything could end in an eyeblink and we wouldn't even have time to react before it happened pervaded everything we did. "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein
