Both James and his father are former officers in the British military. This was the first time James had sung the song to his dad and the recording was done in one take (this one). James' recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted this to be 100% real and a genuine final message to his dad, who'd only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease, and he desperately need to find a donor (which he eventually did, thank God). I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this video to the amazing UK Charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such incredible work with ex-servicemen and service women I don't know how he managed to hold himself together as well as he did, although there are still a few wobbly notes sung towards the end. Bless him.

This is the most heartfelt song I've ever heard to a father. I cried and cried. The words are so deep. The "monsters" part just breaks my heart in half. Used in such a way that is so real if you think about it.

I do believe your whole audience saw their reflection in you while you reacted for the first time. What's troubling for all of us who've seen it before is we all know it will affect us the same each time, just as we all knew this would be your reaction for the first time. That was genuine and so comforting to recognise this crushing song had such a strong pull on your emotional strings. Fist content I've seen from you and you have my subscription.

My dad a few years ago got diagnosed with bladder cancer, I was the first to find out since it was an emergency and I was the only one home. You can't help but to think about your parents especially your dad listening to this song. He's still kicking and in good health but is very stubborn and keeps alot from me where I have to dig out shit that hurts him to admit or talk about. This song is so raw, brave and relatable that in MY LIFE could damn right possibly be the most emotional, beautiful and dark song I have ever heard. I don't know what else can top this unless someone sings a similar song to their parent while they're at their funeral lmao....

Beautiful reaction❤️ SUBSCRIBED. My Mom was 58; we’d known just 17wks she was even sick. Six weeks later my Dad was diagnosed & 2yrs later gone at 63. You are 💯 correct- it matters not how old you or they are… they are always your Mama & Daddy, and you their baby. Now 58 myself & in Stage 3b CKF, this song guts me every time- w both grief & gratefulness for the light James shone on the importance of organ donation. Alan Jackson’s ‘Remember When’ official video & Old Dominion’s ‘Some People Do’ official video are both also beautiful & will get you in your feels in a quite positive way!!! 🥰🥰 Appreciate you & your open, honest reaction! Thank you for allowing us to share your reaction to this very emotional song with you. The first time I heard it was shortly after my father passed. He was in a care facility and because of all the unreasonable covid restrictions, I wasn't able to spend nearly the time with him as I wanted and wasn't with him when he passed. So, you can just imagine how this song hit me. I never cried so hard in my life and find it hard to hold back the tears even now when I hear it.

A very genuine reaction that is/was experienced by myself as well as most of the other 100 or so reactions I've watched. James Blunt is a great artist. He paints pictures with his songs that elicit emotions you either didn't think you had...or that you had under iron-clad control...and don't! But to know the entire story behind the song and the actual performance makes it all reach far deeper than it otherwise might have. Add to that James' genuine generosity and humanity in his donating all proceeds to heroes who put life and limb at risk in the service of their country and its people. A truly heart-warming performance that hits home from a genuinely good person. Thanks James...Well Done Lad!

I can see my stepson singing this to my husband, his dad. His son and he have a beautiful relationship and always did even though he had divorced his mom before his son was born. He took care of him and provided him with not just finances but with selfless love. It's very evident when they're together and we live 1500 miles apart. My husbands nephews (cousins of his son), would probably be there to since he helped raise and take care of them since they were fatherless. He was the male role model that many people always amazed at because he had so much patience with them and never lied to them. What ever he said, stood because he could not stand to watch a kid suffer for any reason. His life was not so rosy. His father left when he was 11 years old and he was the oldest of three boys. His grandmother helped but eventually his mom died at the age of 41 from pneumonia brought on from three strokes. That was in 1969. He graduated, his mom passed, and he went into the military at 17. All right in a row!

My father died on the 4th of July , 3 years ago during COVID. My dad had dementia and regressed to the age of a child.. The last words, my father said to me before he died was “ I love you, Ellie”. I never had the chance to tell him goodbye because of Covid and no one was allowed in to see him, so my dad died alone , not understanding why his family didn’t come see him. The horrible truth is after my father died, the nurse asked my mom if she wanted to sit with him. My mom told her, “I wasn’t allowed to be with my husband while he was living, so why would I wanna sit with him now”. 😢😢😢. This will haunt me forever. My mother was married 45 years. So I love this song so very much! I am so sorry, I probably should’ve not have made a commented .

This song is very hard on me. The last time I saw my father alive was while I was walking out of the front door, my father was a U.S. Marine that went through Korea and Vietnam. so he was tough as nails, but that moment he was weeping like a child begging me to stay. I was in the Army and had to return to my unit because we were deploying. My father passed away three weeks later.

james wrote this when they found out his father had stage 4 kidney diease and no donor could be found. After releasing this song, thousands of people responded by offering their own. Later they found a distant cousin who was compatible and he had the surgery and is doing ok now.. During the recording everyone in there was crying. Only his father was calm asking why is everyone crying? I'm still here.

Children should give the best for their parents. But sometimes even that is still not quite comparable to the love parents have for their children. I have lost my father. And before closing our eyes, we looked at each other, I waved my hand slowly at him and said, goodbye, pap.. his eyes were still looking at me then slowly closed and didn't open again. For a moment I just realized the meaning of that look, maybe my father wants to talk. But the oxygen mask is attached to his mouth. Until now I always feel guilty and sorry for that. Ok, to be honest I have never heard of this song though. And the first time I found out was when Cakra Khan covered it. He sings it is also dedicated to his deceased father. Thanks to James Blunt for making such a great song. Thanks for the reaction, and for reading my comments.

Background. James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father".

Only two songs will make me cry every time I hear them... this and Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. One of the things I love about reactions to this song in particular is very few people don't get emotional. Like a lot of people try to be "tough" and not show a lot of emotion with a lot of song reactions, but this is it's impossible to not feel what James is feeling.
