I know what you mean about Joe's sound being so pleasing....he is really the only one of the superstar guitarists that has this quality. It's just great writing and a great ear. Next up if you want to hear the same type of thing from Joe would be a live version of Andalusia or you could go into Joe's rock your face off side and try something like the title cut from the same album.

Finally! Satch! Every song you do from him should be live. And there should be many reactions - he's amazing.

The is a love song to his wife, Rubina. (FYI, the middle half or so of this song is just Joe improvising, and doesn't appear on the album cut of this song. I've seen Joe twice, he never met a chance to solo he didn't like!) Joe also has an interest in comic books and science; His tune "Back To Shalla-Bal" refers to the Silver Surfer's woman, whom the Surfer was forbidden to see ever again when he was made into Galactus's herald. IIRC, back in the day the Surfer was given one 24-hour period to see her again, and this song represents him shredding space and time to return to her from the other side of the universe. "Surfin' With The Alien" is another reference to hanging out with the Silver Surfer, who was originally depicted on the album cover. The song "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" refers to astronauts' darkly-funny term for an uncontrolled re-entry from space (or any high altitude). Delta-V, in scientific terms, represents a change in Velocity, and Raspberry Jam is euphemistically what the human body turns into when it is traveling at re-entry speeds and is abruptly stopped (by, say, the ground.) My two favorite Satch--my THREE favorite--...AMONGST my favorite Satch songs are such diverse elements as "Surfin' With The Alien", "Summer Song", and "Satch Boogie", which he wrote because he was in a car accident, had to wear a neck brace which prevented him from looking down at the guitar, and had a LOT of time on his hands to work out the song. Oh, and "Crushing Day", which I can say from experience is a great song to play the moment your car leaves the work parking lot. Any of these instrumentals would make a fine subject for a reaction. Finally, If you try and purchase this record at retail with the Silver Surfer cover, you can't. Joe's Silver Surfer licensing agreement with Marvel was for 15 years, and it's now expired.

A unique musician, he was a guitar teacher before his career as a musician took off. He taught many of the greatest guitarists including Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett from Metallica, so a massive influence on music overall!

I saw Joe Satriani in San Francisco, opening for Skid Row, back in the early 90s. He was absolutely amazing. And check out the live version of Cryin.

Joes playing is so tasteful yet he has all the flashy techniques and fast runs. But always tastefully putting the melody of the song first.

Introduced to this by my son when it was first released, great piece and the whole album is fire. Seen him live a few times, too. If you love electric guitar instrumentals, check out Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover, if you haven't yet. It will make you feel joy.

Oh, man. This takes me back to high school in the early-to-mid '90's and listening to this album, along with his then-latest CD "The Extremist" and Steve Vai's "Passion & Warfare," over and over again daydreaming about being able to play guitar like them.

This album holds a very special place for me. Saw Joe on the Surfing with the Alien tour at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH. It was right around the time of my high school graduation. It was summer. It was sunny and hot and life was good. I was front and center for the entire show. The drummer Jonathan Mover came up and handed me the beaten and battered drum sticks at the end of the show. It was also my first introduction to Stuart “Stu” Hamm on bass. His bass solo, which included the Peanuts theme and Stu playing the low walking bass part with his left hand while tapping with the fingers on his right hand to play the higher melody line. Just blew me away. Of course Joe was incredible. Saw the next tour Flying In A Blue Dream as well. Good times. Thanks for bringing me back to it. I’m 53 now. Satch and Vai have some new music out and are doing a tour together, so maybe it is time to do it again. 🔥 ❤🤘

I can’t believe I’m this late to Salvo’s introduction to Satch! Check out the Time Machine live album. The last four tracks are a continuous recording from a 1988 San Diego show, absolutely incredible. Circles and Lords of Karma with a drum solo in the middle, and finally Echo. I’d also recommend Rubina from that album. You’d like Flying in a Blue Dream from this same show here.

Electric guitar tone is a combination of many things (amp, guitar pickups, effects, and the dynamics of the player, pick attack, legato vs staccato playing style, etc.). I think Joe usually is after a tone that is very vocal-like since it is instrumental music with guitar as the lead instrument. The guitar is doing the singing and delivering the melody, so you want t to be clear and pleasant to the ear and not overally distorted or overdriven especially for the lead parts. As you explore his catalog of music more I think you’ll find that the tone varies based on the song and the mood Satch wants to create. That said he does have a signature sound that you can pick out and know it’s Satch.
@strangi28348 ай бұрын
You seemed to enjoy the hammer-on pull-off section of the song. In that case, you should try "Satch Boogie" from the same album. It is a master class in that technique. Also just for giggles or maybe for your movie reviews, there is a small clip if him playing "The National Anthem" in Moneyball.

All Joe is great. Summer Song is fun. For more with Joe but with vocals try some Chicken Foot with Sammy, Michael and Jason Bonham. Also, Satriani did not get his big distortion tone from a super cranked Marshall boosted by some overdrive pedal. He used (and still does) distortion pedals in front of a clean amp.
