Killer Mike is a national treasure. That said the producer El-P is also super important. Great combo!

El-P is by far a more talented lyricist but this song slaps so hard it doesn't matter. Mike has some bangers. When it comes to folded word play and metaphors El-P is the king. He and Aesop.

@@patrickkenney2259 Except I didn't say anything about either persons ability to rap, Since EL-P produced it I briefly touched on his insane production skills, and I called Mike a national treasure because of the songs subject matter. If it was a Run the Jewels song I would have address the rapping of each of them. I might have given my opinion on how well Mikes Voice cut through the mix and how clear his pronunciation is. While EL-P tends to be more garbled When I first started to listen to them I preferred EL-P's style and word play. As of late I have preferred Mikes. Either way they are among the best of the art form. I don't think there is a rap GROUP who's first 4 albums were as strong as RTJ 1-4. They are one of the best an most rap GROUPS of the last 10 years and EL-Ps production is super good and original.

I'm glad you found Killer Mike! He joined up with El-P to form the group Run the Jewels after this album and I highly recommend checking out their stuff! Seriously don't miss out; 4 albums of pure gold and never a copyright issue because they release all their music for free on youtube including instrumental only versions of every album too cool. :)

One of the things I've been... I don't know, embarrassed by? Ashamed of? In some sense troubled by... I was raised being told what a great president Reagan was. That he did so many great things, was such an icon, did better than anyone thought he could, was so loved by all the American people, that the only people who didn't like him were hippies who just didn't want to face reality and that even they "grew up" to respect him, yadda yadda. That he was basically the last president to focus on doing a good job instead of just looking good. That he had a few human faults, sure, but that he was still just such a good man and great leader. It wasn't even something I was exactly *taught,* it was just so casually commented here and there like some undeniable fact of life that everyone accepted. Then I moved out of home and got a clue. Fortunately, I didn't have any personal attachment anyway, but it was still jarring. Just one of the many, many instances where I got blindsided by reality in learning how much bigger the divide between people is than I'd thought it was, and how much more solid the "other side's" reasoning on things (and what they actually want, instead of weird strawmen) was compared to what had always been presented to me.

Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed. We all have things to unlearn. I think every single person has been taught the American lies. This is one of them for sure. But only some of us take the time to unlearn the propaganda.

Reagan was a figurehead specifically chosen for his charisma and image. Nixon lost to Kennedy because TV debates were being broadcast for the first time, and Kennedy ofc was much more congenial than Nixon. Going into the 80s, the republicans didn't want to take that risk again, so who better to run than an actual actor? especially one who'd been involved in the John Wayne-led communist witch hunt in Hollywood. It was a total rebranding by the Republican party, packaged for your viewing pleasure. Reagan also was the one who began pulling back a lot of taxes and regulations on big businesses, which created the illusion of a booming economy that the right-wing still clings to.

Good lord. This whole urban legend started with one salacious series of articles in the Mercury News in 1996 that the authors had to come out and say “oops, our bad, we didn't mean for people to get the wrong impression.” But by then the articles had already been republished in a few bigger newspapers, and so began the legend that Reagan pumped crack into urban cities. Killer Mike is not a smart man. This is a well proven myth. If you think about it for 5 seconds, you would realize it is nonsense. WHY would the CIA go into business with crack dealers(not the most trustworthy folks)?? To get all the black people strung out on crack?!?! To pay more welfare?! Jesus, wake up.

El-P's production has been amazing for years... you should do more Run the Jewels... "A Few Words For The Firing Squad" is one of their best.

You ask if anyone ever came and talked to him after this son was released. I don't know if anyone ever came and spoke to him directly, but one of his bars from the Run the Jewels song Walking in the Snow goes "I said something on behalf of my people and my name popped up in Wikileaks." I highly recommend reacting to that RTJ song as well as A Report to the Shareholders/ Kill Your Masters, Don't Get Captured, Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck, Crown, Thieves!, 2100, Crown, and Thursday in the Danger Zone.
