As silly as this may sound, this song was a real "woah" moment for my friends and I, hearing it as adults. We grew up poor. New clothes, even from Walmart, were not a thing and the hand-me-downs usually were on their 3rd or 4th owner. Everything we got was second hand and we were torn apart for it by other kids. It's no secret that kids can be cruel, so this was such a nice moment.

Macklemore was not cancelled. The album he won the Grammy for was awesome. Still bump it to this day. It’s a vibe. On top of that him and Ryan Lewis was independent on the entire album. So they made so much money off that album he pretty much writes his own ticket now.

This song is what made teens and college students start flooding thrift stores to buy things. There was a huge rise in thrift store sales around the time this song came out. Thrift store shopping became a huge trend when before it was just looked as something for poor people and looked down on

Thirfts were also a huge thing when grunge popped in the early/mid 90's. Thrift stores popped like crazy because thats how the grunge artist dressed .(i.e. all looked like they just came back from a camping trip) so that generation of teens started dressing down as much as possible.

The bald guy at the end in the pink suit and glasses that sings the hook, his name is Juans. Macklemore held auditions in Seattle specifically for that part in this song. Juans is a local guy who got the gig. He’s obviously an older guy been on the local Seattle music scene for a minute. He got to tour with Macklemore, won a Grammy, and gets residuals to this day for having a writing credit on the album.

@@Youre I appreciate the information as I don’t know anything about hip hop. This wasn’t an endorsement for the album, I was just trying to point out that the one song was played during every Seahawks game (before/after) all the way to a Super Bowl championship. The national audience for the song just kept getting bigger and bigger, reaching audiences it probably never would have any other time. The “hype” machine is a real thing, and I don’t find it hard to believe that however they decided the winner of the award it was based on either money made or how much people were talking about it at the time. Personally, I don’t look to the Grammys to truly discern the best of anything.

Also it was a far better balanced album than the overrated Good Kid Maad City plus Drake has been trash since his second mixtape. Was it the best Hip-Hop album of the year though? Hell no, Grammy's always get it wrong with nominations to begin with. A Grammy is worthless lol.

Thrift Shop was a hit no lie. Truly a great song. In the US, it was the overall number one best selling song of 2013, and number one Hip Hop song of the 2010s decade. Its also one of the few Hip Hop songs to have over a billion KZbin views. I definitely believe it deserved the Grammy wins. The album was good too, I remember being hooked on it back in 2013. Its sad how he was literally cancelled for winning a emmy! how miserable can some people be that they cancell a artist because their favorite artist didnt win it...

This song got a Grammy because it was relatable, catchy, and bro was “not Emenim” Caucasian rapper.

How anyone doesn't love this song is not understandable to me. This shit is hilarious. BTW there are some used clothes that are worth a FORTUNE.

This was definitely one of his more mainstream songs but not the best off that Album. He had some other serious songs dealing with his alcohol addiction and issues during his childhood. He also had that other big hit Can't Hold Us with David Guetta I think also.

Dude cut his teeth in small clubs and was tolerated/respected from backpack rap kids until this song. So I still have respect for him.

Yall be playing too much. This (1) song beat all the other albums by popularity alone. This song shot straight through the roof. It has a good beat, story, vibe, hook, and is true to those who thrift shop, and is just plain simple to relate to. It doesn't matter anyway because yall never react or comment to the comments.

That's a pretty pathetic reason to cancel someone, and I don't even like his music. Dude tries to make a conciliatory gesture, and culture spits in his face despite agreeing w him... wow that's petty ish

I'd love to see you guys react to rap from other parts of the globe. I think you've mentioned you like genre mixtures as well. There's a group out of Korea called Stray Kids with 2 Aussies who experiment with trap, EDM, UK drill, rock, jazz, hip hop - but who at their heart have a unit of rappers with the fastest rap by syllable count in kpop. You might enjoy "God's Menu" "Easy" "Freeze" and "Thunderous." The rap unit, 3racha also releases tracks - most notably, the recently self titled "3racha" a play on the hot sauce name Sriracha. Their word play is crazy, so it's most definitely a must caption!
