This is my favorite version of this song. I love Peter, Paul & Mary and they were the ones to make this song #1 in the U.S. This trio was the epitome of folk music in the 60’s. “Puff, the Magic Dragon” was one of the songs which they made famous and generated many conversations and some controversy 😂

Peter Paul and Mary actually were the first to have a commercial release of Leaving on Jet Plane, as at the time John Denver was a relative unknown singing with the Chad Mitchell Trio, who recorded a demo solo album that he sent to friends on Christmas. PPM heard the demo, the two groups had the same producer, recorded their version of Leaving on a Jet Plane. Several years later John Denver released his own version on his debut album Rhymes and Reasons and Rocketed to fame.

Lots of tear-jerkers from them among the great number of songs they recorded, probably the haunting "500 miles" and "Puff the Magic Dragon" - the latter always had me in tears as a child, I couldn't forgive Jackie Paper for abandoning his friend like that. But I'm sorry, this is THE version, it's the most emotional and it's the hit version. No. 1 in the UK and USA, John Denver didn't even enter the charts. I don't like going on popularity as a means of determining quality but in this case, I think it works.

I just finished scrolling through the comments, and I agree with the many suggestions of Peter, Paul, and Mary songs to react to. However, I'm going to throw a related song reaction your way. In 1969, Noah Paul Stookey, "Paul" of Peter, Paul and Mary, was best man at Peter Yarrow's wedding. Peter is the Peter of Peter, Paul and Mary. For his wedding gift, Paul composed a song called Wedding Song (There is Love). He released it as a solo piece in1971, although Peter, Paul and Mary remained together as a trio until Mary's passing in 2009, causing the trio to have spent over 40 years together as performers. Wedding Song (There is Love) is a beautiful, very emotional song. I would like to strongly recommend you do a reaction to it.

I like PP&M, but I thought I read in a folk rock history book that they were a studio manufactured group--put together by studio execs. They were all folkies before they joined together (not sure about Mary here), but studio execs created the group.

@@raenellefisher8514 -- I think the fellow responsible for getting them together was named Al Grossman. He wanted to create a singing group of a lead singer, a girl singer and a funny guy. I'd say he chose pretty well. Their voices blend beautifully. The idea of a 'lead singer' sort of faded out. Each one of them takes a turn as lead on various songs. I suspect a lot of singing groups were manufactured. Not all of them work out. Thankfully PP&M worked out just fine, with a long successful career.

Might sound odd, but I’ve been to hundreds of concerts from rap to metal to jazz and probably the best one I’ve ever experienced is PPM. It was 1992-ish and Peter had used some of Rodney King’s now-famous speech and the honesty, passion, and conviction in those guys while playing it just hit me deeply. And of course the rest of their songs that night were on point. I saw them in a new way during and ever since that night - and it still sounds odd to me when I hear myself saying it was the best concert I’ve ever been to.

Someone once described PP&M as "two cellos and an angel". That's about right. An incredible body of work over half a dozen albums in their youth, then 40 years of being beautiful ambassadors to the world. I have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours listening to PP&M in my life, and I don't regret a second of it. And for what it's worth, this isn't even in my top 10 of their best songs.

I know you're just getting your first taste of Peter Paul and Mary and you may not realize that they have quite a few of really great songs but I'm asking you to take a look for a song by one member of this group named Paul stookey it's called The Wedding Song and it may well be one of the best most perfect wedding songs ever if not the most perfect Wedding Song Ever. I think Paul has sang the song with the group before but he usually sings it alone on his 12-string acoustical Box Guitar. Anyway the only reason I made this remark it's because I believe after you listen to a couple of their songs you'll really want to see what one of the greatest wedding songs ever sounds like.
