Trip-hop is such an overlooked genre, and it's 100% worth it to re-react to the Roseland NYC concert of this song. The entire concert is phenomenal, but Roads, Only You and Glory Box are not to be missed also suggest their studio versions of tracks Humming and Western Eyes. Also just have to take a second and recommend Massive Attack, who is another legendary name in Trip Hop with tracks like Dissolved Girl, Black Milk and Group Four!

Portishead is awesome and unique. If you do any other songs by them, you have to do it from their live show from Roseland NY. The sound quality is much better than it was on this video and they're backed up by a symphony orchestra. It's one of their best live shows. ROADS is really awesome from that show. But anything from that performance is gold.

Funny you should mention the "DJ scratching". The band recorded their own tracks to be expressly printed on vinyl so that when Geoff Barrow mans those turntables, he's actually scratching and sampling from their very own music. They are genuinely a different cut of musicality out there. Thanks for sharing this review and reaction!
@craigcharlesworth1538
@craigcharlesworth1538 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn't realise until watching Trash Theory's video that they didn't utilise samples directly - they got a live band to recreate the sample just the way they wanted it, cut it to vinyl, deliberately damaged the vinyl in order to create the crackly, old-timey vibe they wanted and then sampled THAT. It's an incredibly time-consuming way to create music but it sounds absolutely amazing.

It's always been around, mostly in Europe. Wax Tailor is probably as well known as Portishead there (also toured with a full symphony). I assume it never got pushed by labels or radio since the majority of it is self-produced, and those who produced it also didn't just stick to one style. My other favorites back then were U.N.K.L.E., DJ Shadow, and the untouchable "Lovage: Songs to Make Love to your Old Lady By", and they still hold up.

My interpretation has always been that the Lyrical Eye is tired of playing the dating games. She's done with all the bullshit, she just wants someone to come along and be straight and upfront with romance. No more cat-and-mouse, only real intentions.

I did wonder at the 2022 politics being attributed to a 1990s song. The song feels honest (and remains brilliant what ever someone tries to label it).
@Mannahnin
@Mannahnin 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's both. She does want to settle down and get out of the dating game, but the gender power imbalance was MORE of a factor thirty years ago than it is today. She is asking for love, but she's also asking the man to step up, to be better, to move and make some room so "a thousand flowers can bloom", to look at things from her perspective ("all sides if you can"), and to be willing to share his feelings ("sow a little tenderness, no matter if you cry"). She "just want(s) to be a woman", she just needs him be a GOOD man, hence "give me a REASON to love you."
@Mannahnin
@Mannahnin 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's also a bit of a callback to old torch songs like "Why Don't You Do Right?", again with the singer entreating her man to be better.

Please do more Portishead. Their Dummy album blew my mind the I first time I heard it in college. There's nothing else like it and it remains a classic. My take on this great song is that this woman is sick and tired of playing games and is ready for this man to commit already. The word glory box, i think is a name given for a hope chest, a box that a young woman would store items she will need in her future as a wife. Thanks for playing this great song. She did explain the meaning once because the feminists were accusing her of undermining their cause by saying she wants to be a 'Woman'. Basically the song was saying that she wants to move on from playing around and wants a more meaningful relationship but for that to happen she needs her man to also show a bit more depth and commitment. She wants him to be more of a romantic gallant gentleman so she can be more of a passionate and loving woman.

Ohhhhhhh MY DUDE, you've stumbled into Trip hop. What a journey we have for you sir. Ok first of all, Portishead are amazing. Dummy (their first album) and Portishead (self titled follow up) are both fantastic. Also there's the live at Roseland DvD which this video may have been taken from, that has lots of quality performance material on it. As for Portishead tracks, my favourite is "Roads". I'd love to see you react to that. Then you're going to need to branch out into Tricky, particularly Pre Millennium Tension and Maxinquay. They are both fantastic albums. And then, perhaps some Massive attack. Basically all 3 of the earliest albums- Blue Lines, protection and Mezzanine. When you've done that let me know, I'll have more for you 🤣

Also, lead singer Beth Gibbons did some amazing solo stuff on an album called Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man, the song "Mysteries" from that album is top 5 most beautiful songs ever written, along with Beethoven 5th symphony and Simon Jeffes' posthumous release of "lullaby" on Piano Music.

Portishead brings so much emotion to their music. I feel the lyrics even if I haven’t physically been there. I don’t know, it’s just haunting.

Trip-Hop is definitely one of my favorite genres, and Portishead is basically the epitome of the genre, and most popular band in the genre. Tricky is probably the other most popular artist in the space, he did a track with PJ Harvey, “Broken Homes” which I recommend checking out.

How can anyone who was alive through the 90s and had MTV not know of this song? I was probably like 9 when this came out, and remember it.

The main instrumental bassline is Isaac Hayes song " ike's Rap 2" Trip-Hop was a very popular in the Early to mid '90s the fusion of East coast Hip-Hop w/Electronic music using mainly break beats really was a cool combination too bad Trip-Hop didn't survive like Techno and House music it really was a product of it's time.

Every Portishead song is a trip in one way or another and so unique, I hope you look at more, so, try "Only You", "All Mine" and their cover of ABBAs "S.O.S." that one sends shivers down my spine.

The 90s’… driving the black BMW Z3 through the streets of Los Angeles at night, Portishead playing. Finding the chill parties. ladies on MDMA who just wanted to be held. Best times of my life. Massive Attack. 1st name basis with the DJs. Kruger and Dorfmeister oh god good times. Check out Mysterons and Roads by Portishead. I particularly like the album Dummy and the album Portishead.

They named themselves after the costal town 'Portishead' which is only a 10mile drive from Bristol which is where the band are from.

"Wandering Star" from Jools Holland - great next song to check out. Incredible band - seminal band in the 90's genre of trip hop - their 1994 album "Dummy" is one of the greatest alt-rock near perfect album of the 90's. They mix up hip hop, rock, jazz and electronica in a dark and beautiful amazing sound that no one else has ever re-created quite like them - Massive Attack and DJ Shadow or Tricky - there are many great paths to follow from this Trip Hop family. The 90's was such an amazing time for music.

Sir this band was ground breaking in the 90,s they were the first band to combine interments to create hip hop and the combination psychedelic sounds. Portishead invented the genre of "Trip Hop". I am 46 and a deep product of the 90s, if you would like to chat about the evolution of the music scene of that time i would love to chat. I familiar with so many genres and would love to talk with you on a call or video chat if your down. Now bare with me, if your down to chat old school how can we doe that with respect to your privacy?
