Ray literally made this song up on the spot while playing at a club near Pittsburgh. They had run out of songs to play with 15-20 minutes left and the club owner demanded they play to their contract and so Ray told his band to "do what I do and to say what I say" and sat down and started playing a song they never heard before as they looked at each othee in bewilderment. They never heard it before because neither did Ray, he literally made it up on the spot along with the lyrics which he later said "didn't have any meaning, they made no sense, I just said some stuff to kill time"

A number 1 hit in 1962. During the Kennedy Administration. This is the 6-minute album version. The edited single version that played on AM top 40 radio stations back then was about 3 minutes. And the intro was cut much shorter. Just a great classic hit. You can never get too much Ray Charles.

Treat yourself and rent the movie "Ray" from your cable's On Demand offerings. Jamie Foxx played Ray Charles in the movie, and it's well worth the time.

Recorded in 1958, released in '59. This joint was way ahead of its time. Nothing before it sounded like this, and a whole lot that came after, including a lot of British bands like the Beatles sounded very much like this.

This song was considered 'dirty' when it hit the market. As teenagers we were not allowed to play this song in the house. We waited until our parents let the house.

Most blues songs were written in 12 bar pieces, this one was written in 6 bar pieces which made it unique in the way a blues song is structured. This whole song sprung from an improv jam Ray did when he had to fill some time at the end of a set. He was usually an electric piano which was the new hot instrument at the time (late '50's). Ray was a true innovator in so many ways musically.

Ray got away with the sounds of sex by making them rhythmic and playful. Didn't realize what he was doing until years later. Some caught it immediately. But I was naive kid.
