Shania grew up in extreme poverty in Canada, and I'm pretty sure is of native ancestry. Her genre is country, but she was married to rock producer Mutt Lange who produced Def Leopard among other rock bands. So, I'm sure thats why she was a crossover artist! She grew up playing in bars to help bring money into her family's home and when her parents were killed in a car crash when she was a teenager, she took care of her brothers and sisters by singing on cruise ships and anywhere she could. She grew up in a home with alcohol and sometimes violence to become one of the biggest stars of her day. So, I really admire her courage and determination! And she writes her own songs!

Her album COME ON OVER (this song is from it) is the best selling country album in history and the best selling album by a female artist in history with over 40 mil.copies. Also the best selling albumby a Canadian. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and stayed there for 50 non-consecutive weeks. It stayed in the top ten for 151 weeks. Ten of the sixteen tracks hit the top 20 of the Hot Country Songs chart, eight of which hit top 10, including three No. 1s. People are saying Shania is country pop but she is more country rock. She changed sound of country music in 90s and also changed look of country music. But country music industry never gave her credit she deserved.

Shania Twain is a Canadian Singer/Songwriter who came onto the scene in 1993 with a self title debut album that in the industry was technically a flop. She received a call from a producer by the name "Robert "Mutt" Lange who has worked with Bryan Adams, Def Leppard , AC/DC and more offering to producer her next album. They met and fell in love writing there album "The Woman in Me" released in 1995. Her and her husband actually created what is known today as Country Rock Music, a style and category that didn't exist in the early 90's and were hated by the traditional county music industry as they violated the traditional golden rule of the style by introducing the electric guitar and hard drums blending the two styles perfectly together so that is why you were confused you were hearing the two styles blended together seamlessly, now who could imagine country music without a good electric guitar lick in a few songs on an album today. Shania was also disliked a lot for wearing crop sweaters/top showing off her navel/ belly area which in country music at the time was unheard of by a female artist; women were to cover up from the ankles to the base of the neck, a little decollate or legs from the knees down was an artist being risky and rebellious back then and all that was really allowed (sounds ridiculous today) so that style was viewed by the industry as trashing up country music. So once again so many young female artist today and throughout the early 2000's have no idea she took the character beatings and is the one that paved the way for them to dress so sexy in country videos now. Today 3 of her 5 studio albums from 1995 to 2002 have sold over 100 million copies. Give her songs "I'm Gonna Getcha", Any Man of Mine, Rock this country, The woman in Me, From this moment, If your not in it for love, Up, That don't impress me much, Honey I'm Home and she has such more than that and you will hear not only the evolution of their country rock style they created and that crazy swing of mostly rock one song and then one mostly country in the various songs. Thanks for the reaction

It was Shania Twain who single handedly opened up Country music to accepting a rock influence, that was her greatest contribution to music, aside from her amazing songs and performances. By the way, she started singing when she was quite young to make money to help her family, she's also a Canadian, and Canada has its own Country music stylization too, most Americans think Nashville is it as far as country goes, rather than appreciating that the world loved America's country music so much, other countries across the globe have adopted it too! Nashville should rejoice in that it has such a wide spread appreciation for its Country sounds.

Shania’s first couple of albums were more country, but this music producer, Mutt Lange, saw one of her videos, and contacted her. He was smitten, They got married. Mutt had produced rockers AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Bryan Adams, among others. The two paired up musically, wrote songs, and changed the sound of Country music forever. She was the hottest thing in country music, but her sound was more country pop. To this day, her influence is heard in the rocking country on the radio now. When rap, bubblegum pop, and hip hop took over pop radio, rock moved to Nashville. Unfortunately, Mutt cheated with her best friend, and just like a country song, Mutt married Shania’s best friend. Shania turned to her best friend’s husband for solace, and THEY are now happily married. A real life wife swap. 😉 I’ve seen her twice in concert. She puts on an amazing show!!

Great observations! You're not confused at all; you're just a good listener. Shania is just a very inventive artist who transcends genres. She has country roots, but writes catchy music that could be put into a pop or rock category. And her look in this video (an homage to a Robert Palmer video) is definitely not typical country. So you're not confused. I've never much cared for categorization anyway. She defies it. :)
