This man joined the Spencer Davis Group when he was 14 years old, Island Records. Producer and founder Chris Blackwell later said of Winwood, "He was really the cornerstone of Island Records. At age 16 the Spencer Davis Groups' first recording became a hit. He moved on to Traffic and Blind Faith, before starting his solo career..

@@theresatrapp4532 The Spencer Davis Group's first single was 'Keep On Running' and Steve was 17 when it was a hit in the UK (I don't know if it was ever heard in the USA). It was followed by 'Somebody Help Me' then Gimme Some Lovin'. I first saw them in Edinburgh when Steve was still 17 or 18. If you haven't heard them, have a listen to 'Every Little Bit Hurts' and 'Georgia On My Mind' - still with the SDG. They're on youtube.

James Taylor singing backup! The story behind the mandolin, according to one biography about Steve... He and his first wife divorced. He got the house, which he had purchased before they married. She got the contents of the house. When Steve returned to the house after his ex had left, the only things left in the house were a table, and a mandolin. He turned a heavy blow into a song of hope and looking forward, not backwards. Well done, Steve. It's time you guys plunged into Traffic, the second band Steve was in. Some deep cuts - 40,000 Headmen, Every Mother's Son, Freedom Rider, Walking In The Wind.

I've been assuming you have already reacted to the Spencer Davis Group, but maybe I shouldn't. Steve Winwood was the lead singer, when he was 15/16 years old. Their biggest hits were "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man." Two of my favorite R&R songs. Highest recommendation this old rocker can give. I saw them in person in '66 in Cleveland. Winwood was the same height as me at the time (5'4"). I got stuck at that height, but I assume he grew some more. I couldn't believe that voice was coming out of that little guy - had to see it with my own eyes.
