I was in this situation years ago. I wasn't having an affair with him, but I was in love with him and he was already with someone. I was his confidente, the person he came to and told stuff he didn't want to tell anybody else. And every time I told myself I would distance myself from him, he would pull me back in. He didn't know I was in love with him, he wasn't doing it to be mean, but this song made me understand that sometimes holding on hurts a lot more than letting go. The line "It's too much pain to have to bear to love a man you have to share" killed me the first time I heard it. It showed me I had to distance myself from him before it destroyed me to watch him go back to her every time. Now, years later, I'm in a relationship of 6 years. I love my husband, but part of me will always love the other guy, even though I barely see him or talk to him anymore. I know I had to walk away, but doesn't mean it didn't hurt like hell

So... the backstory behind this song, at least from what I have come to understand. Jennifer originally wrote this song after listening to a song from, I believe Reba Mcentire and decided to write a song telling the old love grows cold/cheating story from the other side. So, the lyrics have nothing to do with anything that happened to Jennifer personally. However, when it came time to make the music video, she apparently was going through a divorce which influenced the emotion that we see on display here. I dunno rather or not she got cheated on or anything in terms of that divorce, just that she was apparently going through one at the time.

Jennifer had gone through a divorce, I think the previous year, not one involving infidelity, at least according to reports at the time, they just simply divorced. But she was thinking of Reba's song 'When Whoever In New England's Through With You', and got the songwriting inspiration to sing from the perspective of the other woman. The very real emotion she shows in this performance is no doubt fed by the very real pain she felt from going through her own breakup. But I am thankful for the reminder that it's so easy to just dismiss someone as having caused their own misfortune, should have known better, that'll teach you, and all the other things we say to justify withholding ordinary human kindness from each other. Yes, she realizes all that. She could have stopped before it got to this place. And she was indeed campaigning for a marriage to end in order to benefit herself. All that's true. Still doesn't mean a fellow human being isn't hurting, and could use a helping hand. We've all felt pain in our lives, and not all of it while entirely innocent ourselves. Should we turn away someone's comfort because we deserved what we got? If not, extend that same courtesy to someone like Jennifer is portraying here. Just be decent to each other.

Props to her for trusting the director of this video. What a brilliant choice to keep rolling when she breaks down and just let her pick it back up in one take. That's real raw emotion and you can't fake that. It's almost too much. That's why it hits so hard, and why it won video of the year.

When this was filmed, she had broke up three different times. The director was going to ask her to go through it one more time, when he got a good look at her and saw that she was a complete basket case. He wrapped the filming, he was afraid that if they did one more take, Jennifer would leave in a ambulance.

This is an incredible song, and Jennifer's performance is just ridiculously good. I love how the end of the song (from the point where she says, "I'm up off my knees") shows so much strength and empowerment. She's still extremely emotional, but she realizes she's lost so much time waiting around for this guy, and that it is finally time to move on. I genuinely love this song and have watched most of the reactions to it on KZbin, but I haven't heard anyone point that out.

I've seen many reactions to this and most often the replies and reactors call her out as "The side piece" therefore she is the problem and deserves the pain. Having been away from home for extended periods numerous times over 26 years, I sadly have witnessed both men and women return home to hardship due to an unfaithful spouse. Many ime the "side person" had been dupeted into belie ing the other was single but by the time they learn the truth they are in love.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!!
