Greg Alman used a Corociden medicine bottle as a slide. Slide orginated long before. Old blues players use to lay their guitars flat across their lap and use a folded pocket knife to get the slide effect.

Slide acoustic or electric guitar (also called bottleneck, which is what the slide used to be made of) was started in the 20's or 30's by the Delta blues players but was really popularized in the late '60's but any number of performers, including George Harrison, Duane Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Page, and many others. Duane was considered the real virtuoso, and was tapped by Eric Clapton to play slide for Derek and the Dominoes.

Slide is an old blues technique from way back. Hawaiian music also heavily uses slide. Someone told me long ago that the origin of slide was an attempt to make a guitar sound like a voice singing. Don't know if that's true, but it makes sense. Duane did use his fingers to pick as did many of the blues guitarists back in the day. Johnny Winter picked with his fingers, so did Freddie King.

Funny to watch a first timer explain their way around their first view of the Allman Brothers. First, this is a video of 3 different concerts and only one is of the actual song. Duane’s slide footage is from Love Valley 1970 “Mountain Jam” song. The other two are from ‘70 and post Duane concerts. Probably ’73. BTW that’s a glass Coriceden bottle for slide guitar that came from cold medicine over the counter stuff.
@raycewilliams33009 ай бұрын
Near the beginning of the twentieth century, blues musicians in the Mississippi Delta popularized the bottleneck slide guitar style, and the first recording of slide guitar was by Sylvester Weaver in 1923. That is of course Duane Allman on slide guitar. Certainly one of the best in this era.... if not THE BEST.

Keyboard and vocals are Greg Allman, and the other blonde guy playing the guitar, is his brother Duane, who died in 1972 or 73. Dickie Bettes and Duane Allman were two of the best guitarists around. They invited Eric Clapton to come down to their place in Georgia and jam with them for a week. After that, Eric and Duane played on each other's albums. Duane was killed while riding his Harley down a quiet country road, when he was hit and killed by a truck carrying a load of peaches. The name of the next album was called "Eat a Peach," in his honor.
@jmcc1998 ай бұрын
This is from Chuck Wertz as told by his widow and is absolutely 100% authentic. He was driving the truck that Duane swerved to avoid hitting. But there are a lot of misconceptions about his death. First, it was a crane/boom truck Chuck was driving. It was not a peach truck, as legend has it. As best as I have heard from folks who were close to the situation, Duane was perhaps traveling a little over the posted speed limit. The truck was coming in the opposite direction and made a left turn, several hundered feet before Duane was on top of him. The truck had to slow down due to a large pothole in the street he was turning onto. Duane went around the truck to the left. He either went slightly airborn due to a hump in the road and lost control, or he may have made contact with a hydrant on the corner of the intersection of the two streets he was going through. Either way, he lost control, and he and the bike began tumbling. The bike went airborn and landed on top of him, causing multiple internal injuries. He had no apparent external wounds to his head or body. He was alive when taken to the hospital and died on the operating table after three hours of unsuccessful emergency surgery. The doctor who attempted to save his life has said he had at least three severe internal injuries, and any one of them could have proved fatal on it's own. Keep in mind Duane was of a slight build. He was around 5'9" and may have weighed 125 pounds soaking wet. Chuck Wertz was cleared of any wrongdoing in the wreck. It was a horrible set of circumstances that happened all at once, Chuck having to slow during the turn, and Duane exceding the speed limit. The whole Eat A Peach thing was taken from an interview Duane did once. The interviewer asked Duane what he was doing for the "revolution." (Keep in mind this was during the Viet Nam war and there was the whole anti-war and counter culture movement going strong at the time.) Duane resonded, "Man! There's no revolution! Only evolution! Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace!" So, the album title, Eat A Peach, has nothing to do with the circumstances of Duane's death, but everything to do with Duane and how he lived his life.

Some guitarist use their fingers, some picks, some do both seperately and a lot do both at the same time espcially country players. A lot of slide players use their fingers. I'm pretty sure they do it to help mute strings that they don't want to ring out.
