All vocalists have been (and are) great. But very different to each other. Tarja (Tar-ya) were, and still are, very operatic. Anette were, and still are, very poppy. And Floor is ... everything with her diversity. As I said, all 3 ladies are just amazing, but my favorite singer is Marko (The bassist) Safest choice 🤣

Tarja can sing non-opera style but she has chosen never to do any growls. She can put a rasp in her voice, and sing in a mainstream pop style, but no growling. But generally, her style is a classical approach to rock and metal. She has a lot of great material in her solo catalogue, too.

If you want to know Tarja as an artist, you really need to see her solo stuff. Songs like Supremacy (Muse cover) from Woodstock 2016 and Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour. She is an amazing singer- song writer and performer. Her main focus is classical and she is really good at that. Fantastic vocalist, who doesn`t need to growl. This is her thing. She does incorporate a lot of pop elements to her solo performances, but she also has an impressive classical career. She even wrote an Ave Maria herself. It is very beautiful. You should also check some of her songs from the ACT I concert in Argentina. Fantastic stuff. Songs like Crimson deep and Still of the night. Oasis, which she wrote and performs playing a piano. A true artist.

Yes, Captain Jack on the keyboards. This is their rendition (cover) from the Broadway Musical. I think you may find a song right up you alley called "Master Passion Greed". Never performed live, but sang by Marko and very aggressive and angry. Tarja (Tar-e-yah) is basically all opera and rarely goes beyond this style. This was from the last show with Tarja. All 3 singers are very good. We all have our favorite, but respect all 3 equally.

So yes, Tarja can do other things as well, not just pure operatic voice. I think that she has a very dark chest voice that she uses more on her solo career after Nightwish. Although there are some songs with Nightwish (especially in the last two albums with Tarja) where she doesn't use the operatic voice that much.

Nightwish's 3 singers: 1. Tarja (original singer): 1995 to 2005 2. Annette: 2006 to 2012 3. Floor (current singer): 2013 to 2020+ everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. So, usually, she gets left out. so, it comes down to "Targasm” (Tarja) vs “Floorgasm” (Floor) in terms of the Nightwish singers in who you like most, if you like classical/opera singing better, Tarja is better at it, but that's all she does back when with nightwish, as nightwish was created for tarja's unique dark operatic singing/voice, (now with her own band, or solo, she does a greater range of singing), but she does it really well, she's really got a beautiful voice, if you like more pop singing, belting and growling/raspy, with or without classical/opera singing, than you like Floor better I knew nightwish from the early 2000s, so Nightwish will always be with Tarja, but Nightwish with Floor is really good too, but it's Tarja, who's my favorite singer with nightwish (many others will help you out with Floor's songs, so I'll just stick to Tarja's songs here) ---------- if you do like Tarja with nightwish, here's some good ones: (make sure the song performances are before 2006, else it's not tarja who's singing them) (NOT ranked, just listed) 1. End of an Era (her last concert with nightwish, hard to find good quality and the entire concert, as it gets taken down) 2. Phantom of the Opera (her duet with Marco, really good, both of them together, this song was actually used in the Phantom of the Opera remake movie in 2004) 3. Wishmaster 4. Planet Hell (marco sings in this song as well) 5. End of All Hope 6. Dead Boy's Poem 7. Nemo (watch the official music video and also her live performance of it) 8. Kinslayer 9. she is my sin 10. wish I had an angel 11. slaying the dreamer 12. the siren 13. dead to the world 14. 10th man down 15. walking in the air 16. ghost love score 17. dark chest of wonders and many more too ------ this is about the 'phantom of the opera' with tarja nightwish, but it applies to tarja for all other NW songs too: Tarja has her own stage performance/presence, but the focus is on the entire band (much more respectful), unlike with floor, where the focus is almost entirely on her, and also, Phantom of the Opera isn't about that much showmanship, so you're not seeing more of Tarja's performance/presence (love how the camera work and Tarja worked together, with her ducking down, seeing Marcus as he delivered his singing, and then Tarja stands back up, seeing her face back in the camera as Marco's part ends and hers begins again, Tarja is really such a team player, as she could have had all the focus upon herself, like Floor gets, but instead she chooses to give the entire band the respect and focus that they too deserve, it's not all about Tarja, like it is with Floor, despite how good Tarja is and thus how she could be the entire focus with nightwish, as is Floor with nightwish) there's other songs, where Tarja was way way way more stage performance/presence/showmanship, including hair windmills, rocking an invisible guitar along with empuu rocking his guitar, along with her doing her squatting too as she sings and taps her foot/leg to it, as she's swinging those hips too, along with her getting the crowd involved as well too, and etc stuff, you got to watch way more songs, to really see her amazing stage presence/performance and showmanship, as Phantom of the Opera is likely the one song with the least of that stuff, due to the nature of the song itself, being about their singing (contrasting and then cacophonous harmonous duet, nothing can compete with Tarja and Marco voices duet'ing), though Marco and Tarja had a bit of showmanship and fun snuck into it, with Marco pointing to his face and Tarja's facial expression reactions, while both song their parts

The basic Nightwish sound remains consistent because of Tuomas Holopainen, aka the Metal Mozart. He is the band founder , keyboardist, primary songwriter and composer. Tuomas and Emppu (guitar) are the only 2 remaining original members. Besides the 3 singers, there have been 3 bassists and 2 drummers, you've only seen Marko on bass and Jukka on drums so far. Yes, this is Tarja Turunen(96-05 ,5 albums), the most operatic of the 3, 2nd singer was Swede Anette Olzon (07-12 ,2 albums) who is more pop/rock style, and Floor(last 2 albums) most versatile, took over in 2012. Both original songs you've seen so far were written for Tarja. There is also a 6th member you haven't seen yet, multi instrumentalist, and male vocalist ,Troy Donockley (UK) who joined 2007, permanent 2013, plays pipes whistles, bouzouki, guitar with EBOW. FYI, when you see a 'J', assume it is pronounced as a 'Y'.

Technically all the songs you’ve done so far are from the Tarja-era, with GLS and Romanticide originally being sung by Tarja on her last album with them. You will see more of a change as you move into songs written for Anette and then again with Floor. Each singer had different strengths and Tuomas built his songs to best suit them.

Arguing about who is the better singer is nonsense. They are all great, but do have their differences. I personally was never a fan if Anette, and said already in 2005 that Nightwish should have got Floor to replace Tarja, but that doesn't make Anette any less of a singer, it just says something about my personal preference.

To answer your questions: 1.) This indeed is a cover of the broadway song, only the musical arrangement has been changed, metallified, so to say. (that is a rare occurence by the way, because 98% of the material of Nightwish is written by Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardplayer, bandleader and original creator of the band. 2.) as for the two singers: both are classically trained, but there is quite a marked difference: Tarja is much more a purely operatic singer. She is better at that opera stuff than Floor, Tarja is, however, much "narrower" in her capabilities. Where Floor has an enormous grasp of practically any singing (and non-singing) technique that you can imagine, and an unbelievable flexibility in switching between techniques, Tarja is pretty much limited to the operatic style, and the quality of her voice clearly drops when she needs to do other things than these operatic high notes. And by the way, this performance of the Phantom of the Opera is by far the best performance by Tarja. Most other performances with Tarja do not get up this level of quality. Floor on the other hand is much more consistent over that whole enormous spectrum of her possibilities. PS. If you want to hear how Tarja sounds nowadays: she performed at Wacken 2022. And the same goes Floor and Nightwish who performed at Hellfest 2022 (Full show by Arte music)

@@larryzigler6812 I am sorry, but there is nothing exquisite about Tarja. I have recently heard a few old songs from 1999 or so, where she mainly sings low, in the alto / mezzo registers, and where she sounds very good (beautifull, warm, rich, "chocolate-like" notes) . But nearly all her later work is terrible. Those resonant high notes are manic, and there is always some hard to define "grating" quality, she often loses control, and as said her control over the muscles for enuciation of vowels is bad, leading to many harsh and scraping sounds. I can not listen to any of the more recent work of Tarja for more than a few seconds, because it grates my ears and deeply irritates me. Now you may call that "lies", but that only shows your inability to accept that someone else has a different opinion and experience than you.
