Worked with a guy who he custody of his kids, his ex was in and out of jail, rehab and mental hospitals. Every time she got out she sued him for custody. It took him over 10years of lawsuits to get the courts to stop letting her sue for custody

"There's nothing in it (marriage) for you if you're a man"? Marriage can protect your spouse's assets in terms of death. I've seen too many horror stories of "We lived together 17 years, he passed away in an accident, and because we weren't married, his parents were considered next of kin and took all his stuff (sometimes up to and including an engagement ring "because you weren't married yet") and our money." Being married can also allow a partner to make medical decisions in an emergency, be allowed in the hospital to visit partner, etc. As for "there's nothing in it for you if you divorce," depends on who is willing to play dirty, in my experience, not necessarily gender. To make a very long story short, my ex tried to screw me over in our divorce after claiming "to stay friends" so I'd trust him. I came very close to losing custody of my son, having to pay my ex child support, and not having a say in the terms of my divorce. When that failed, my ex ran back to his home country to avoid paying child support (thankfully, without my son. I'm pretty sure he tried, though, because he kept demanding to show up at my place to see son). Sixteen years later, he hasn't paid a cent, and my son has never received so much as a phone call for his birthday (not even sure ex knows when son's birthday is) or a Christmas card. I also have several (female) friends that have been similarly screwed over. There are too many legal loopholes for sure, and "who can afford a better lawyer" should not be a factor.

I agree with you on the contract thing. I will be married 30 years March 5, 2023. I would love to have kept my madien name and have a contract just like renewing your license lol. My system is we are still married he moved out in June 2012 moved back with his Mommy. He did pay the house payment (its paid off now) and I have health insurance. This works for us and our daughter who is 27 and has been married for 4 years.

From when I first heard it I always thought the guy in the truck might have had a substance problem thats why hes driving a beat-up truck and was not allowed to see his kids. Even when it came out in the 90s courts were moving more toward 50-50 unless one parent was unfit. This is also the decade that gave us the song Little Rock and other country songs about parents who had problems and needed to rebuild their lives.
