Bro I grew up on this album. Both shocking and incredible to hear at a young age. Chapman is a genius. Sorry, not bro apparently lol. Apologies.

I was going to recommend "Behind the Wall" as well, I really hope he gets to hear her perform it acapella the way she did on the album. The absolute lack of music reinforces the emotion an intensity of the story she tells. Also, because of the neighborhoods I lived in, that song became (and still is) a very reat and constant experience for me. It's amazing how relevant her songs still remain after all this time. It speaks tremendously for her as a writer, but also devastating regarding our development as a society.

@@searchingfororion I agree. Behind the walls rocked me when I was a kid. I was living that, and couldn't understand how people could just ignore what was going on. Still don't. I know why they do it... it just makes me sad that ignoring it is the safer option for most people.

@@searchingfororion completely agree. The Acapella makes it hit harder. In my eyes, it is a masterpiece and as relevant as ever

@@RinniePere It's about "protocol" and "priority" when it's handled by the police. And as I said in my comment, part of that has to do with the neighborhood. It's literally the system giving the officers the (very watery) guidelines about if they can/should/have to intervene.

This performance, at the Nelson Mandela Tribute back in 1988 will always give me chills. I have loved her since her first album came out. Just a woman and her guitar, yet she had the attention of everyone in that crowded stadium. She is a treasure and I’m thankful that I got to witness her rise to stardom. ❤

Aside from her incredible music, I have always admired Tracy because she always stayed "herself" -- meaning she never gave her into the glamour machine that women in music industry always seem to have to go through. Tracy has always stayed true to herself and her music. Actions speak louder than words. She is one of my heroines. PS her cover of " Give me one reason" is absolutely incredible! I would recommend next.

"Give Me One Reason" is certainly a popular song of hers worth listening to. "Unsung Psalm", "The Rape of the World" (and be mindful that it was released in 1995) and "Remember the Tinman" would rank high among the songs I'd love to see you give a reaction to. Thank you for continuing to explore this amazing artist.

Tracy - and her music - is truly luminous. Her voice, her tone, and her view of the world... just amazing. I recommend listening to: "Behind The Wall", "All That You Have Is Your Soul", Give Me One Reason", "Sing For You", & "I Did It All." They span her first eight (!) albums, and it shows. Her growth as a human, a woman, & an artist is laid before us in her music. Beautiful

We the people going about our daily life doing mundane tasks have the ability to change things. Change starts with an idea shared with someone, it can be anywhere at anytime and it starts with a whisper. Quietly ideas are passed along until the grow and catch fire spreading through the zeitgeist and what was a whisper yesterday is a scream tomorrow. This song reflects the power that we have as normal people living our lives to effect change in the world around us.

This album was a huge hit in the U.K. Politics at that time were as devisive between have's and have not's as ever and the young people were disproportionally victims of right wing policies. I haven’t read all the comments so I don’t know if this has been said. I’m pretty sure this was Live Aid at Wembley. Tracey was booked for a slot & did that, she was amazing. She was then asked to fill the slot booked for Elton John. His backing tape hadn’t arrived & as Tracey only needed herself & her guitar, she was asked to fill in. She did it. Amazing for one so young, at such short notice in front of a huge crowd. Takes some guts & she won everyone over. Loved her for many years, she is among the top musical storytellers but sings about the hard to hear stuff. Any of her songs will touch you.

I grew up in poverty and am a social worker now, and she sings about real life and real struggles in a way that makes you feel empowered. The best thing about this song is that it is a modern day protest song that can be played on guitar by those of us with short fingers (like me!) and can breach through the barriers. She’s speaking to everyone who feels like they are getting their clock cleaned. And if we all band together there is nothing we can’t do. Everyone loves Tracy Chapman. But even when she’s gone, that song will remain relevant because it’s about the have-nots which increase exponentially with the emergence of every new billionaire.
