It’s so crazy, as when I was a young kid me and my dad were driving down the road in his truck and on the street a guy and his girlfriend were arguing and the guy hit the girl right there. My dad saw it, pulled straight over - told me to wait in the truck - and went over proceeding to whoop that guys ass. I’ll never forget it and it has always stuck with me… then this song came out and I knew exactly what it was about.

My wife played this for me the first time I heard it. She talked about all the times she'd been worried about how far I'd go protecting someone or intervening in an incident. The next day, my CNA played it at the office, talked about how it reminded her of the day I'd stepped between a patient and her abuser and told him he was leaving "out the door or the window but the cops won't be here soon enough to keep me from stomping your ass" One of my old ER buddies texted me the same day asking me if I'd heard it, saying it reminded her of me. I can't stand an abuser, makes my demons want to play. I have no empathy, sympathy, or concern for anyone who will abuse another person. My wife calls it "flipping the switch" when I get protective. If a man will hit you once, he will beat you until he kills you. Never rationalize or excuse abuse. Leave before you're trapped. Never accept or tolerate abuse. If you have to defend yourself commit to do as much damage as you can as fast as you can as loudly as you can. Use everything you can pick up as a tool, and don't stop until they can no longer hurt you. Never accept, tolerate, rationalize, or excuse abuse. It's not your fault if they hit you, it's not something you did, you do not deserve to be abused, and NO you can NOT change them. Abusers abuse because it's what they are. You can do better, you deserve better, you deserve love not abuse.

Yes, a wife or girlfriend being beat to a pulp and threatened with death by various means has been a catch and release, if that, for as far back as I can recall. If he does the same thing to a stranger, he gets some prison time. 😢

Love this song. I was living in Vegas for awhile with one of my best friends. She came home from work in tears n hugged me so hard I thought she was gonna break my back and she finally thanked me and then showed me their video. I chuckled a little once I realized why she had been crying. We dated when we were kids and I used to step in a lot when her mother n sister would beat her. Her mom only pulled a gun on me once and it was the last time she ever did because I told her she'd better use it and hope I'm dead, because if I wasn't she'd be the only woman I'd ever lay my hands on. I moved to Vegas to help her with a stalker problem, and once everything was good, I moved back home to help my parents put with bills due to some personal family issues. But once everything here is good, Im gonna move back out there with her and keep an eye on her a little longee until I know she's perfectly ok without me around.

I was mentally and emotionally abused for many years. At the time, I didn't even realize it was abuse. When my thoughts kept turning to suicide, I knew it was time to get out. After I finally left, God sent me a true Angel. I was lucky enough to have him for 9 years before he passed away. He was able to help me build myself back up after being torn down for so long.

It took me a long time to get my identity back. He stripped me of it emotionally and physically. It came down to the fact that it was either going to be me or him, I’d had enough. I really didn’t want to do time for taking that scumbag out. Always glad my brother lived in another state and didn’t know because if he did they would have never found the body.

Leaving an abusive situation is hard for those being abused, some times they do not realize the extent of their abuse until someone outside steps in. It took me physically standing between my lovely bride of 22 years now and her abuser to get her out of that situation, even today she still struggles with the lingering effects of that abuse.

The abuse you discuss is what I watched my mom go through. Finally she found the strength to get out. She suffered for way too long. She is an amazing woman. Super happy/proud of her strength to finally get out. She’s 71 and I’m 47 but all these years later I’m so thankful she got out.

That was a powerful song and message. You don't need to apologize for anything. You've been in that situation and you know how it felt. My wife was in a toxic marriage and that's exactly what she went through. I've been listening to what she went through for the last 39 years. I'm so grateful to have her in my life. I just discovered your channel and want to say that I really like the fact that you imbue your reactions with personal information. You're not the only reactor to talk about mental health awareness, but most don't talk about their own struggles. I have a couple of music suggestions for you, both in your wheelhouse, and both with two key versions, the original and a cover that overshadows it. First is Suicide Is Painless by Johnny Mandel for the film M*A*S*H (1970). There are several well known covers, but Marilyn Manson's version from 2000 is the big one. Second is Hurt by Trent Reznor. Originally a Nine Inch Nails song from 1994, Johnny Cash covered it in 2002 and even Reznor has said "the song isn't mine anymore". I'm looking forwards to watching more of your back catalogue. Keep up the good work!

Good day Amanda ......... at timestamp 11:00 you are so so so correct that it is not as easy as to just leave an abusive relationship ......... there are so many reason that factor into why you are in that relationship as it never started out abusive ...... the abuse came in over time and now you feel that it is your fault and you just take it over and over until you are gone or you break and take them out ......... If you happen to be strong enough to leave then they come bake all sweet and pouring you with kindness until you come back and then slowly the abuse restarts until you are broken and think it is your fault...........

Being raised in the south we were raised understanding "wait in the truck" or "get in the car". You don't argue, you dont ask questions, you just do it cause you don't need to know. So many women in this situation pray for someone like this also The Judge under the seat is the name of that particular revolver. It's a 45 colt that also holds .410 shotgun shells.

Something the song doesn't directly explain is whether he was originally going to shoot him or just rough him up, because it mentions the shot once the guy is reaching for his own gun, plus in the video he does grab him some first, but the guy quickly panicks and reaches for the gun.

Be careful. You can get your ass sued. I've had cops tell me the worst situation they could be involved in is domestic disputes. No matter who is at blame, the other person will attack the cop. That single question he asked her: "Where's he at?" When my best friends little sister told me and her brother, my best friend, the story of what her ex did that was our first and only question. In unison. It was all we wanted to know. Way before this song came out. She refused to say and that's probably for the best. She had just managed to escape and police were already involved. Justice was served, but I would've loved to have been a part of it. This song just hits different even if I wasn't the one getting abused. I can't imagine I'd ever regret it if I got to him first.

I first learned of this song from a facebook clip and when i heard the line about the Judge under the seat i had a rough idea where it was going with the reference to the Taurus Judge revolver. In fact it was that lyric i used to search it up on google and landed on the song. But that said seeing this reaction vid came around at the right time as a means of discovering your channel as well. After years of my friend hiding her bruises and cuts, I was with her when her boyfriend started belittling her relentlessly. I pulled him aside and asked him to stop. He continued. I was wearing pointed toe heels. I kicked him as hard as I could between the legs. He had surgery a short time later. She went on to marry him. The abuse continued. She no longer considered me a friend. She went on to divorce him and marry yet another guy who beat her. She had been my best friend since we were 9 years old. I would not change what I did. Once free from an abuser do your utmost to not pick another.

I've been wanting to hear you react to this one for a while now. I was excited to see on your Patreon that it was coming up. I very much believe in giving a chance for people to heal as well, but I'm very much a "Dexter Morgan" type of person who wants to see someone stopped if they're not going to change. I LOVE this song! One of my favorite parts is when he says he sat on the porch smoking one of HIS cigarettes and waited for the cops to come, as if he's saying "I did it, he deserved it, do what you need to do." It brings out the protector in me. I've entered a strangers apartment before to pull a girl out and hold the guy who was beating her in front of the window in there until the cops showed up. She was escorted through the apartment by the police the next day to get her things. Another country song I like that's similar to this one is "Baby who hurt you" by David Morris.

I know I've left you books on previous videos, one was Metallica's One if I remember correctly, and this video is another one that really hit home and made me break down so I apologize ahead of time for another book. I've heard this song many times on the radio and do enjoy it. However I've never seen the video or someone's reaction to it. Every time I hear this song, all I see is my wife and the pain and suffering she went through with her ex husband and how amazing it must have felt to have someone stand up for you when you couldn't. For years he mentally and physically abused her and one day beat her for nearly three hours and actually tried to strangle her to death. All with their three children in the house, which I'm happy to say I have adopted and are MY kids and I love them more than anything in this world! And it was all because she asked him not to do drugs in front of their kids the night before. He only received 18 months in jail then got out and did it again with his new gf. He has continued to haunt us both knowing he's still out there and we are going on 9 years later. He is still always in the back of our minds. So the story and meaning of this song really hits close! I would give anything! Including my life and freedom to have been there to give that scum of the earth what he really deserved like in this song! Regardless if I knew her or their situation or not! This is something that I, and everyone should never see acceptable or as a maybe he can change and blah blah thing. Absolutely zero tolerance for these disgusting acts! And to have a legal system that doesn't appropriately punish these monsters is just as disgusting! It took 3 years for the system to finally approve their divorce and another 4 for me to adopt them. So yeah...again thank you for making me cry like a baby and end up share more of my life story than I probably should have. But, we all have our demons in this crazy messed up thing we call life and sometimes need to let it out.

To add to the other comments... he was not a bad man, he was not an evil man... perhaps he grew up in a house of abuse.... as he knew what had happened to her without asking... he was a man who saw a need, saw an evil and acted on that need and evil. He was a man of faith (evidenced by the court scene bridge (Oh Lord have mercy on me was not asked to the court system... it was a plea to God) and visibly evidenced by the cross hanging on his rear view mirror... was his action legal, obviously not based on the trial, was it morally just.... that is up to each individual for you cannot legislate morality... but for every victim of DV, he would be an answered prayer... and for every man... the story forces the question... "what would I do?" I recently picked up on another aspect of the acting...you can see the transfer of 'weight' from the weight on her as a DV victim... to him, as the reality of what he did sank in looking at the body on the floor... she has her weight lifted as she no longer has to live that life... and the weight of the decision he made settles onto his shoulders, heart and mind.

Powerful song and story line! Hardy is an amazing talent But she is absolutely fantastic,, such raw, pure talent! Years ago a person i know was beating his girl friend up when i went to visit a good friend of mine. I asked what the hell was going on he said, "Bob" is beating her up again. i walked into the house and told her to go to the car, then proceeded to show him what it was like to have someone whip you like a dog and there is nothing you can to stop it. Told him ,"touch her again and I'll come back and finish the job". they broke up , he never touched her or any other female again,, i just took her to her parents house..was the last time i ever saw her.. so yeah there are still a few of us left,,

To add to the idea that it's not so easy for the abused to "escape", but also, even if he had taken her far away AND the guy couldn't find her- though there's no guarantee of that!- the guy could still just find another to abuse, and very likely he's not so great for other people in the community. Vigilantism isn't a good answer, because innocent people can accidentally be targeted, but it's hard for me to have a problem with a violent abuser being removed from the world!!!

My husband like to hit me and throw me around. I went to bootcamp. He tried it once when I got back. I can still see him sitting on the couch, holding his face and screaming you broke my jaw. I didn’t but he never did it again. This guy in the video seems to have had nothing to lose except his truck. My friends always wondered why I would stay with the guy that hit me. It was an upgrade from my parents. They beat me daily and he only hit me once every month. I did a lot of therapy to make sense of it all. We divorced because I couldn’t forgive him. I have forgiven him now that he’s died, it’s easier.

Hahaha 80% that is BS, I was a Marksmanship instructor in the Marine Corps and I would only say about 35% of the the people that volunteered to serve had ever touched a weapon, let alone be ready to take a life with one.

There is a revolver they call the judge that will .45 cal and 410 shotgun shells and the barrel is probably close to a foot long. Its called the judge because chances are your gonna die if your ever shot by one. .45 cal is only a few thousanths smaller than a half an inch in diameter. Thats a pretty big hole

I was in an abusive relationship and tried to run one day when I saw a cop outside our apartment I went to him for help he gave me a disturbing the peace ticket because “I should keep private matters in the house” and my boyfriend was yelling so me coming outside was a disturbance and I felt that maybe I was wrong because the cop basically said I should stay home and accept my beating I stayed for two more months one day he came home made and attacked me before he shut the door and he had a knife this time I thought it was the ending yelled for help and a man came running into the apartment and beat up my boyfriend he looked at me and saw my bruises his eyes were so sad and all he said was “you are better than this” and walked away once the shock wore off I went to the court house and got a restraining order and filed a complaint he evidently found out and took off I have never seen him again or the man who helped me I wish I could thank him tell him I got away I got therapy I healed I met a wonderful man who treats me like a queen I will never be able to thank my angel enough

Survived barely 8 months by a guy. My child's father. I had him on video admitting to attempting to burn me,threatened to unalive me,I had pictures of bruises,videos of SA and medical documents of him putting windex in my food when I was pregnant....out of all of this.....he got a year of probation. He then stalked me for almost a full year after. It's been 2 years now since I got away but I'm still suffering the after effects. The justice system did more then fail me. Didn't read my impact statement despite asking for it,didn't do a psychological evaluation despite me asking for it....only thing I'm thankful for is he gave me my son. I was single mom for the first year and a half of my son's life. Now he calls my fiancé dad....I'm healing slowly and realizing love shouldn't hurt. But again....I wish he wasn't alive....I'm not the first or the last girl he will hurt and that haunts me daily. The justice system betrayed me. Failed me. Failed my son.

When society fails to protect the weakest among us it becomes the duty of strong men unencumbered by "the rule of law" to act outside of that law to accomplish and provide the protection. She says she doesn't know if he was an angel because angels don't do what he did, but I would submit that he was both a 'Guardian Angel' as well as an 'Avenging Angel' in this instance. This song pushes many emotional buttons, that is its intent and I for one am glad it shines a light on a problem that our society would rather keep in dark corners and forgotten names.
