I believe this was recorded the first time Wakeman was in the studio, after ditching Strawbs to join Yes. Yes had been playing “America” during their live set, and Wakeman had to learn it. This was at the start of the “Fragile” sessions.

Nah. I Love yes, And this version is fine, but the S&G version is best. It's supposed to be a pensive song. Like when Whitney Houston turned Dolly's tender love song into a car alarm. the original is clearly better.

OMG!!! It's not a cover, it's a completely reimagined interpretation. Amazing! CHRIS SQUIRE (RIP), a virtuoso... THE master of the bass guitar (Rickenbacker). And what about HOWE's solo in the middle of the composition? Tremendous! Thanks.

I wish this song had been on Fragile INSTEAD of those....uh....somewhat "filler" solo pieces. 1.) Roundabout, America, 2.) Long Distance, fade out and fade into South Side, then Heart o Sunrise Wooda Been AWE-SIMMmmm I think there were contract / label issues though

I almost forgot to report in here after listening to the Patreon earlier. Although the original from S&G was enjoyable, YES definitely took the song to a completely different level! Chris and Steve were definitely the stars of the show.

What a nice surprise on waking! I have the Patreon link but saw this first 😊 Chris always working bass magic and also doing those high harmonies - what a musician ❤ There is a live version out there - and I agree about “Country Steve” 😂 Have you heard music by Paul Simon’s wife, Edie Brickell? Her album “Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars” was amazing. 1989 I think

😎👍 Do you mean the album "Remember the Future"? I enjoy that one a lot, and I also like "A Tab In The Ocean". My favorite Nektar album is "Recycled", especially side 1! (One of my top synth/keyboard hero's Larry Fast is on that album! 🥰 I really love Larry's Synergy solo albums and his work with Peter Gabriel too.)

I recently got done listening to the "value added" Patreon post for this because we were treated to the original Simon & Garfunkel version first as well as the Yes version after, but I'm giving the Yes version a second listen here as well, certainly ! 😁👍 Hey, have you heard "America" by The Nice, which was Keith Emerson's band before ELP? (it's from the late 60's) It's not really related to the S&G or Yes "America", it's basically a rock jam on the original "America" which is a song from the 1957 musical West Side Story. Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and Leonard Bernstein composed the music. And even less related to all of the above is the 1975 Styx song "Suite Madame Blue" which is about America in general and the lyrics repeat the word "America" 24 times and it's really quite good, I think you might enjoy it!

Why thank you so much for the double watch! I have not heard The Nice's version, but I know the West Side Story version very well, as I watched that movie when I was like 10 or less, and that song was quite memorable. Still need the amazing Sondheim on the channel (for sure next time I bring back my "The Musicals" series)! I actually reacted to Suite Madame Blue along with Prelude 12 about 1 year ago here!! 😊 And even less less related...I watched The Jazz Singer when it was released in theaters (wow I was 5), and even had the record, so I know and love the song America from that film as well!!
