A HUGE part of BabyMetal is the brilliance and precision of their performances. You are not really reviewing Babymetal if you are only listening and not WATCHING. You really need to check out their live performances. Especially from the early years when they were just 14 or 15 years old and filling stadiums. Truly a sight to see. Note: the key word hear is SEE, not just hear.

They sound like they have baby voices because they recorded that song when they were like 12/13 years old. They weren’t faking little girl voices, they were little girls.

Good first reaction ... and what was that you said we would say? "NO, don't start here!" Pretty much right. 'Gimme Chocolate' was the video and song that went viral and got them noticed - largely because of the WTF reactions it gets, which is also why it is their most viewed video - the contrast between the heavy instrumentals and the "kawaii" vocals is emphasised, deliberately I think, far more than in nearly all their other songs. Although it is a great fun song at live concerts and I would be disappointed not to see and hear it, they really have so many better songs ... and as you said, this was 8 years old, they were aged 16, 14 and 14 when 'Gimme Chocolate' was released. You said you like to do lyrical analysis - we can help you with that ... and they do have many far deeper and meaningful songs. 'Gimme Chocolate' is just one of their fun songs - there's no harm in throwing one or two of them in after all. For the best translations along with cultural notes and explanations for all songs from the first two albums simply Google "Du-metal" plus the song title. That will take you to a fan's blog site where he has done an excellent job. Sadly he did not continue onto the third album as he didn't consider there was so much related to the Japanese culture that he could help with on that album. I don't know who told you their backing band was "generic" - they were very wrong. There is absolutely nothing generic about BABYMETAL or their musicians (the Kami Band). What you will find is that they have done things their own way, they haven't followed the generic JPop model, they haven't followed the generic or traditional (as we know it) metal band model. They have blended or fused the two different musical worlds to create their own new metal sub-genre which they call "Kawaii Metal" (kawaii meaning cute as in adorable, absolutely not as per the alternative western meaning of cute being sexy). BABYMETAL are that most rare thing - a unique "band" (or whatever you might like to call them) doing something new, untried and different while being entirely respectful of and paying homage to the genre and all those bands who have gone before them. They do come across as gimmicky to some of us in the west, but there really isn't a gimmick - BABYMETAL is the girls (lead vocalist Su-metal along with Yuimetal and Moametal with backing vocals, harmonies but mainly in charge of hyping the crowd through their choreo, leading chants within songs and so on). They started in 2010 aged 12, 11 and 11 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group. As members of that group they would sing songs and dance, the only difference is that instead of singing and dancing to pop music they do it to metal music - and it is metal, not just distorted guitars stuck on pop tunes. Looks like I will have to break my comment up (far too long as always - apologies for the wall(s) of text).

At the start they had no budget from their agency, this was the pet project of just one man (a lifelong metalhead with a great love and respect for metal) based entirely around the vocal talents of the lead singer. He saw her with her previous JPop trio and was very impressed with her voice and stage presence - she was still only 10 or 11 at the time. He thought her vocals too powerful for pop and that she could front a metal/pop fusion band. They had to be self-funding (they even borrowed clothes to make their costumes for their first shows with the Idol group - the other sub-units had theirs paid for) as no agency in Japan in 2010 would have invested in metal as there was virtually no market for it at that time, but under the umbrella of the Idol group there was no risk to them if it didn't take off or just failed. So they sang their songs and danced to a backing track with pre-recorded instrumentals and they started to gain a small following. They branched out to play their own shows, starting off in a shopping mall and tiny venues with a capacity of 150-250 people and they played the food hall at a metal festival. As they gained more popularity a little more budget was made available and late in 2012 the live band (the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians) were brought in to play the encores in a couple of shows and they played at a couple of festivals with BABYMETAL. In 2013 Su was 15 and it was time for her to graduate from the Idol group (it had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15) and it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her (also Yui's and Moa's) vehicle and should separate from the Idol group to go with her as an independent band in their own right. In December 2013 she turned 16 and the final step was taken in the transformation of BABYMETAL from sub-unit of the Idol group to independent band and the Kami Band became their full time support in all live shows early in 2014. They have been with them ever since. The Kami Band members have their own bands and projects, so they are not all always available and there have been a few different members step in here and there, but the same hard core of 6 or 7 musicians have played the vast majority of shows since 2013.

The girls' vocals in the studio recordings always seem to be over-processed and compressed. They are so much better live where Su in particular can really show off her natural talent and diversity. Live shows are also the only times you will hear the Kami Band doing what they do better than most, they are not involved in the studio recordings (just one known exception is one of the guitarists, Leda Cygnus, who has recorded guitars and bass for a handful of the songs). BABYMETAL is not like the typical recording artist where the album is the pinnacle and they play live to promote the album. BABYMETAL are a live performance act first and foremost - the albums give you a taste of what the songs should sound like, but you are missing out on 60% or more of what they are really about if you only ever listen to their studio recordings. Su-metal is 24 now, Moametal is 23 - the third original member, Yuimetal who is also 23, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues and had not fully recovered so was still unable to perform, so she announced she would be leaving the band and hoped to follow her own long held dreams. From the start of the 2019 tour through 2021 Su and Moa, who had chosen to continue as a duo after Yui left, were supported by three dancers (the Avengers Kano, Riho and Momoko) who took turns to dance in the third spot (no vocals). They have about 50 songs now and every one of them is different. Some are very metal, others (like 'Gimme Chocolate') lean more towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. They have songs in virtually every metal genre (thrash, djent, black, death, power, speed, folk, prog etc) but they will blend in other musical styles and genres with the metal (not just pop, you will find ska, reggae, Bollywood, Latin, rap, hip hop and so many more) often when you least expect it - and they make it work. If you don't like one song no problem, try another - it will be different and the chances are that one will appeal to you and may even become a favourite. Jake Muller has provided you with some excellent suggestions for what songs you might try next for more reactions. Live performances are always the way to go (the official videos are very good too and well worth watching ... but they have international awards for things like "Best Live Band" and they won them for very good reason).

Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal Galaxy 🦊🤘 Good thing you already know something about them. Thanks for sharing this but trust me when I/we say BabyMetal is better to enjoy them while watching their live performance and with the Kami Band sound, album songs are fine but this isn't the way to fully enjoy the BM experience. I'll leave some recommendations down below just in case for next reactions. See you next time 🦊🤘

Again thanks for your thoughts on this but when you get live performance you'll see why this is better to experience watching them with full visual experience. And just so you know thanks to BM the gates were opened up for all those japanese rock and metal bands you mentioned after 2010. This list will help you to find some of their most favorite songs from 1st and 2nd album, if you look for 3rd album songs please refer to BMRR channel recommendation, sorry for no links but if you search for the titles it'll be easy to find: - Catch Me If You Can, live at Budokan 2014 (you got a safe to react version with subtitles at GuilhermeCait channel) - Akatsuki, live at Budokan 2014, this is a SuMetal solo, "BabyMetal Fans Ecuador" and *アカツキBabymetal* got the Black Night version (the safest one); and "アカツキBabymetal" channel got the Red Night (this one is heavily blocked, both are pretty much the same, only thing is different shots and SuMetal different outfit, not worth the risk so go for the Black Night and watch the Red Night on your own). - Megitsune, official MV is my first recommendation because of the Japanese elements and to avoid spoilers during live intro, but if you want live version check it out Budokan 2014, "Kawaii Metal" got a safe version; and Red Fox Festival 2017 (my favorite version), BMRR (Babymetal Reactor Resource) got this version under the title "Me - Git - Sune All Female Audience 2017". - Karate, again official MV is beautiful and you'll get more meaning, but I highly recommend you live at Download Festival 2016, "kitsune6001" got a nice version with a short interview. - Road Of Resistance, live in Japan 2015 official live MV is blocked so take care, alternatively BMRR got some others awesome and unique versions, just watch version before 2017 when YuiMetal is still on the group and leave the rest for later reactions. - Rondo Of Nightmare with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro, live at Budokan 2014, "Kawaii Metal" got this (length is 7:03). - Headbanger!! live at Legend 1997 in 2013, "Gans Tomas channel" or "abr metal" got this under "Head Bangya" or "HedoBangya" title. - Akatsuki Unfinished Version, SuMetal solo again but with only a piano behind special performance at Legend 1997, there's a "widescreen" version safe to react at "Kitsune Sama" , careful with other versions around coz is heavily blocked. - Babymetal Death, live at Legend 1997, GuilhermeCait channel got this safe to react, read the description for translated intro. - YAVA! with Kami Band intro live at Big Fox Festival 2017, again BMRR got this. - GJ! live at Tokyo Dome or Wembley Arena 2016, is a Black Babymetal song with only YuiMetal and MoaMetal, BMRR got this. Recommendations like "BxMxC, PA PA YA!, Shanti Shanti Shanti, Kagerou, Distortion" those are from 3rd album without YuiMetal and the girls already grown up. There's also an special set called "Trilogy Of Lights" with songs in order: "Starlight, Shine and Arkadia", you won't get the meaning of this complete set going randomly so leave this for the moment. And remember some of these you can find at Babymetal Reactor Resource channel (BMRR), look for "Future Plans" short vid and follow instructions to get those watermarked logo clips of their best live performance, put the logo for us while you watch the one without logo (read the description on the vid to get those clean version), if you don't pause a lot this won't be so much issue when editing. Please, don't pay attention to suggestions over live compilations (like KuroKitsuneSama) and fancam, this isn't the best way to experience BM songs for the first time, there are very few exceptions you can go for this because won't affect your visual experience so much. If you're looking for more info about them you should watch "A BabyMetal Guide" by CrypticMisery channel, but first i highly recommend to watch Babymetal Death and BxMxC to avoid some spoilers, maybe Rondo Of Nightmare too. Feel free to ask me anything you need and I'll do my best to help you out. See you next time 🦊🤘

Yup! I’m one of those who wish reactors would not choose this as their first reaction; no offense intended to those love love’d it from the beginning. Lyrically your correct in that’s it’s simply about women who like chocolate, but are afraid of putting on weight. Musically, they are very heavy, but lyrically are always very uplifting positive messages than the standard satanic metal of my age. I’m around 60 years old. You really need to view their live performances and something newer than 8 years ago. Babymetal started as a subgroup of Sakura Gakuin, an all female J-pop Idol group with a school theme nearly 13 years ago. They are working on their fourth album; not including the 10th anniversary best of. They have millions of fans around the world and have played with, collaborated with, or even toured with as an opening act for: Metallica, Judas Priest, Bring Me the Horizon, Guns & Roses, Korn, Dragon Force, Polyphia, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lady Gaga to name just a few. In short, they are a J-Pop metal fusion band that combines metal with: J-pop, Hiphop, Ska, Latin, Indian, Eastern European and many more, but mostly just metal. The group is formed, centered and marketed around the two (formerly three) young ladies; now women of 24 and 23 years old. They are backed by a session band of the worlds greatest metal musicians (no exaggeration). Actually, they now have two different bands; the Eastern Kami’s and Western Kami’s (Americans) do to scheduling conflicts during their 5th (?) world tour. I can go on and on, but I’m positive your about to get more information (and more accurate) than I could ever provide. Come back.

I think the part where the girls doing their "cute machinegun" sounds is difficult to get into, because it sounds too much like a meme song like nyan-cat or something. I think what most fans don't like about this and don't want it to be first reaction because it more on purely gimmick and doesn't show everything that keep they stay with Babymetal, like how good Su vocal Live, she's a phenometal vocalist, unique way of singing, very straight and stable voice, versatile in different kind of music with ability to convey and change emotion when singing, I even say she a lot better as a vocalist than all these Japanese bands broke out international recently, in this MV they even used studio audio and no Live band because it was very early.

I did enjoy both your reactions and honesty. I have to say that Babymetal (a successful experiment in a Pop/Metal fusion band) is something I never thought I would have gotten so into. I am a few months short of 60, and have been into Metal since the late 70's...when I first happened upon this video (and finally decided to check it out, after months of passing it by), I think it took three views until I could even utter a word. I had no idea what I was seeing...but I had to see more. That was four years ago, and I have not looked back. They are so versatile and surprising with the genre mixing and I do hope that you decide to invest some more time in their music (live is almost always better). Very much looking forward to another reaction, and if possible to a live performance that you can view. Anyways, I am sure other folks have given you way more info, or soon will!

Nice reaction. When Babymetal started they were a shot in the dark. Koba their producer took a big shot here. In the end it worked out. Metal head elitists have been very hard on Babymetal over the years. You're not alone in that. But Babymetals live performance have won over some very hardcore folks. And they have gotten support from within the industry over the years from the likes of Metallica, who they got to open for. Red Hot Chilipeppers who they also opened for and got to perform with some of the members as well. They even performed with Rob Halford at an award show. They did Painkiller and Breaking the Law with him. Babymetal started young is an understatement. It should say they started ridiculously young. Su-metal the lead singer was 12 when they formed the group around her. Yuimetal and Moametal were 10. Which means those young voices you're hearing are from young girls. Surprise, you should be, it surprised me when I saw them. Seeing them is a big part of what makes Babymetal special. Their energy, stage presence and crowd interactions at their young ages is outstanding. They accomplished more before 18 than most bands ever dream of. Today their all over 20. Moa's birthday was July 4th. She turned 23. Su's birthday is Dec 20th. They've been working on a new album. The fans hope it drops before her birthday. Some of their biggest shows have been for their birthdays. If you see in the video tittle Legend 1997, That's the years Su was born, and the concert is for her 16th birthday. Legend 1999 is a combination of Yui and Moa's 15 birthdays. Born only a few weeks apart. They had similar looks when they were kids so don't feel bad if you can't tell them apart. The other two Legend S and Legend M are for Su and Moa's 20th birthdays. Yui left the group officially in 2018 due to health issues. Since they were kids Babymetals private lives have been kept Very Very PRIVATE. Basically no one knowns what her health issue was. But Su and Moa have kept in touch with her and have said she is doing well. I hope you continue your journey with Babymetal. It is a journey because while their music is listed as Kawaii metal. All their songs are different and yet retain an overall sound that makes you know it's Babymetal. Mostly that's due to Su's incredible voice. You'll have to go down the foxhole to have that pleasure. Hope to See You there

I liked your reaction and analysis of the songs components, looking up the lyrics was also nice to see. The video on KZbin went viral when it was released which is why it has such a high view count. The song itself wasn't even released as a single initially and in my opinion is not the best song from their 11+ year, 3-album career to date. They formed in 2010 when the oldest was just 12 and the songs they released had lyrics and themes that were age appropriate. So the songs have matured in themes as they have. Live performances are more often than not the way to go for them, so with that in mind here are some suggestions I think you could react to as part of your journey into the foxhole 🦊🤘 These are titles of videos on KZbin: BABYMETAL - Headbanger Live @ Legend 1997 Apocalypse BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL) BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL) BABYMETAL - Megitsune Live @ Budokan Black Night BABYMETAL | Catch Me If You Can (with Kami Band Intro) | LIVE at Budokan Black Night (HQ) BABYMETAL | Rondo of Nightmare (w/ Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro) | LIVE at Budokan Black Night Then once you're through a few of those you might be ready for this one: BABYMETAL DEATH | Legend 1997 (Complete) I do hope you continue on your BABYMETAL journey, I'm very excited to follow you on it.

I truly think most people have that "WTH IS THIS?????" reaction to their first time listening\seeing Babymetal. It is not something they expect and it takes time and repetition (and research) to truly appreciate and enjoy Babymetal for who they are and what they are doing or trying to accomplish. Contrary to initial expectation, "Babymetal" does not refer to the girls ages (10-12 years old when formed) but rather a "New style or genre of Metal". The only rule to reacting to BABYMETAL is expect the unexpected as almost no two Babymetal songs sound the same as they constantly fuse various genres and cultures to metal. I recommend "Megitsune" for a next reaction. But watch the video, (this is one of the few where the official MV is recommended over a live performance, but live is okay) you do yourself an injustuce by only listening to the song. If you want something more Pop-y and in English, check out "Elevator Girl - English version" off the third album "Metal Galaxy"

A lot of Band Maid and Lovebites fans ( not all ) hate BabyMetal with a vengeance and will go on reaction video to just hate on them . So probably bad idea asking them info on BabyMetal . I enjoyed your reaction your thoughts on it where interesting . You got loads of info in comments already . So i just say i have seen BabyMetal a couple times and in my opinion best band i have ever seen . I have been waiting 2 years to see them again and this time i will travel to Japan to see them from UK they are that good 😁 Not watching them perform live is like only getting 50% of the performance . I really hope you check more of them out . If you do just like to say welcome to the foxhole . Like a lot of others said Gimme Chocolate is not there best song but leave it out a show i would be disappointed because it is fun and they never give less than there best when performing it even 8 years later 😁🤘🦊🤘

Why not the video - BM is about WAY more than the music?

We are in the process of upgrading our tech. We have done a few videos only to find that they end up lagging in the playback. A few more pieces to add and then we will be back onto videos. It is safe to say that overall, we prefer the pure listening experience. However, it seems that there are some bands that demand the visual along with it in order to capture the true experience. Thanks for watching! - Ddubs

@PeteFrantz Best live band in the world, twice! Shit son, that's pretty significant! I am definitely a fan of the live experience, don't get me wrong. But I also enjoy the strict sonic experience minus the visuals. With that being said, Live BabyMetal is definitely in our future. Thanks for checking out our video! - Ddubs

@@ddubsnbstar835 As for the sonic experience that is completely understood, I was that way myself until I found BABYMETAL, once you learn how it all began you will get it. They were so young when they started they could not afford a band. So they played to backing tracks. Their shows being so intricate once they hired a band the band needed to be flawless. Which in turn made the live show even more impressive and better than the studio versions because the band had to play live the studio version flawlessly since the show was already being performed live to the studio version on tracks. And now you end up with a band that is better live than in the studio.
