I like that you split your reaction personas. There are many who react to the...the beauty of the MVs, and lots of back story/theory reactors, and your lens is unique. I checked your video out because you labeled it as mental health, and while I was disappointed at the initial lack of depth, I checked my bias. I was expecting an analysis but I got a person-who is a mental health professional AND also a music lover- watch a super hot Kpop group and enjoy an MV. Your honesty in reacting was refreshing so I kept an eye out. Giving yourself and us time to react to an MV on different levels is a wonderful gift. I look forward to more of your work and am excited to be on the journey with you.

Thank you for your open and honest comment, Juli! 💙 There are typically 2 levels to my videos, as I mentioned in the video. I appreciate you understanding that I'm not JUST an MHP but I'm also a music lover. Even when I don't intend to, mental health usually makes it into the conversation (just check out any of my other videos haha). My BL reactions are quite known for me getting deep into conversations on topics particularly around mental health or LGBTQ+ rights/experiences. However, music videos don't always allow for that discussion - though when they do, I am certainly more than willing to take the time. Thanks again, Juli! Wishing you the best! 💙

@@Psynergic Hey just saw this & I like your reaction so far, especially the analysis of the mv and how that ties into BTS's message. If you want to do more mental health related analysis like this one, check out their Love Yourself album series and the songs related to that, like Euphoria, Serendipity, & Epiphany. There is also Persona, Shadow, and Ego videos, which is part of their Map of the Soul album series that involves Jungian psychology. I also noticed that you're pretty new to the BTS rabbit hole. Besides the videos you have reacted to, if you need a good starter guide playlist to help you, you can use this one. It has a bit of everything, like three of their most iconic stage performances (2018-2020 MMA), personally the top standard of what they be can do, two introduction videos, a few of their reality TV show episodes, RUN BTS, and the starting episode for their KZbin docuseries: kzbin.info/aero/PLrX8cd2jvHh6MCpfArH5rgx4wyCsiO65T. Read the disclaimer on the left hand column, there's more info and links to access their vast media content. For more performances, you can also use this playlist which has more stages you can look through. Has a mix of dynamic stages, regular music program performances, Muster/fan meet concert, live Las Vegas/LA Stadium clips, US show performances, & also some unplugged stages: kzbin.info/aero/PLrX8cd2jvHh6h19uWz11kFPe687ZNvU-2 Thanks and I hope you do more similar videos on BTS 💜

It's inspired by dancer Martha Graham's quote, “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” It's about what happens if/when they lose their passion for music.

Blackswan is part of the Map of the Soul album the series is based off Carl Jung map of the soul given your background you might find that interesting if you start at the beginning of the series. BTS go deep with there music and thier lyrics which set them apart from most groups. Wings album was based on the book Demian by Herman Hesse.

I am forever thankful to them

As a psychologist, you will love BTS’ deep lyrics. The Map of the Soul series is based upon Carl Jung’s theories of the self. Black Swan falls in the shadow concept, which focuses on our fears and doubts. Hence, all of the shadows in the MV.

Loved your reaction! Also, I definitely had the same "hello" reaction to Tae on the stairs haha! ... Even though you said you didn't want to do a super deep dive on the psychological theories ... if you do ever want to flex that muscle, BTS has three songs (Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow and Outro: Ego) which were inspired by a particular theory, without giving too much away haha. The songs are from the same album as Black Swan, and the themes run through a lot, if not all of the songs on the album. ... And then on another unrelated hand, if you're wanting to swoon, definitely check out Blood, Sweat and Tears - it's deep in it's own away, but it's also 🥵

What you said is interesting. For me, when i think about it, "being unable" to do what you have passion for is far worse than "loosing passion" . Cause, when you loose that passion, it means you can find new ones or even take ur passion back at some point, just like what you mtioned. But when you become unable to do sth you're fond of, it's actual torture. You have maximum passion but you've lost your tools.

OMG! Thank you for finally putting a name to what I’ve been experiencing! I lost my passion for everything when I reached my lowest point-even art-which I had been obsessed with since childhood. BTS actually played a large role in helping me find joy again. Many of their lyrics were made part of my mantra during therapy. I even tattooed a part of that mantra onto my wrist so I would always have it there somewhere when I needed it most. Their music really is so wonderful and inspiring. In case you’re curious, my mental health is doing a lot better. I’m still healing, but I’m no longer at that unmentionable point. I just wish my passion for art would come back.

I'm happy you reacted to this one. It is so good, yet so unappreciated by most. Black Swan. I was just getting into BTS when they released this and it hooked me. It's what really pulled me in (this one and their Boy Meet Evil MV/song) and it pulled me into the fandom. This is my favourite song and more people need to appreciate this masterpiece. I was in a bad place when I found Black Swan/BTS and I connected with this. I loved the music and after reading the lyrics it hit me. It really brought me back to my passion for music which I had lost and I had no interest in at the time. (I'm a musician, singer, and I write lyrics and I stopped doing it for years.)

Hi!! So sorry! I dont speak English. So I'm writing in Spanish. See you!

BTS has addressed subjects like Depression, Self-love, Tolerance and Coexistence as well as so many other topics through their lyrics, social actions, and even their MV's and album concepts. Their "Love Yourself" album series was filled with so many meaningful songs and each album in the series covered different themes. In their words the series encourages each of us to “Find love in myself, embrace people and society in a larger sense with love.” This is what BTS pursues through the Love Yourself album series and LOVE MYSELF campaign. Their Map of the Soul Persona series used Carl Jung's theories on our different "persona" of each of our psyche, ego, and collective consciousness... the songs lyrics in these songs are amazing as they examine persona, our shadow self, ego..... I am not a professional like you but I appreciate how BTS uses song lyrics and MV/Performance concepts as more than just songs...

The solo modern style dancing in this MV, as well as the one with the wings, is all Jimin. He has been trained in Modern/Contemporary dance, before he ever became an idol. The Martha Graham quote applies to Jimin, more than any of the others. RM and V have both said that Jimin IS the black swan. As you pointed out, losing your passion for something you love is something that most people can relate to, whether they are dancers or not. RM cried when he wrote this because all of them have chronic pains and issues, but Jimin has always been a dancer before anything else. There's a behind the scenes thing showing Jimin doing the solo dancing for this MV and he's complaining of pain even at that point. For Jimin, the writing is already on the wall. At some point, he will have to stop dancing, possibly sooner than later, and will die that first death. That awareness of Jimin's physical condition is part of what makes this song heartbreaking to me.

Thank you for this reaction! When you initially said this was more going to be a fun let's just enjoy it video, i had a suspicion that the lyrics might just try to tug some analysis out of you, too, and then the comments you added at the end were very interesting to hear! If you decide to do a more in-depth video about this one at a later time, might I suggest you also watch the "art film" for it? It'll give you a quote in the beginning that they based the concept on. I don't mean that in "this is the correct way of interpreting the song", because I love hearing varied thoughtful interpretations way too much. More as one more facet to include in the overall picture of the song and it's artistic expression.

As you probably already know, BTS has 7 members.... they are a very close "family" and totally genuine. The group has 3 rappers (RM, J-hope, & SUGA {aka Agust D} and 4 vocalists (Jungkook, Jin, V, & Jimin). The best way to get absorb each member's style is to dive into their solos, as well as the Rapline & Vocal line performances. Here are some suggestions. While some have MV'S, some are even better live (be sure to find ones that have subtitles cc's) RM : Change ft. WALE mv ; Joke ; Seoul J-HOPE : Airplane mv ; Outro:Ego mv ; Chicken Noodle Soup mv; HEY MAMA live performance (amazing!!!) Suga : Agust D self-titled mv ; Daechwita mv ; Interlude:Shadow mv RAPLINE : Outro:Tear live at Wembley ; Ddaeng live w/ eng sub ; DDaeng live w/ end sub Jungkook : Euphoria live ; My Time live D2 on BTS LIVE 2; Begin live Jin : Epiphany live ; AWAKE live ; Moon live V : Singularity mv ; Stigma live ; Inner Child live ; Christmas Tree (OST from Our Beloved Summer) Jimin : Serendipity live stage mix ; LIE live stage mix ; FILTER live ; With You (OST from Our Blues) Vocal Line: The Truth Unknown live ; House of Cards live ; Lost Live stage mix ; Dimple live stage mix Just for fun check out their "Ma City" live when they all just broke loose and also have the band GHOST backing them up onstage. 2 of their rappers RM and Suga have struggled particularly a lot with depression, self-hatred, and suicidal thoughts. RM addresses this struggle in 2 songs he wrote and produced - Always and Suicide. These 2 songs aren't well known amongst BTS fans I think, because he released them pretty quietly as free songs, not part of his mixtapes or any BTS album. I think he also made them very very early on in his career, so they're very old songs. RM has also struggled a lot with finding his identity as an artist and a person, he went through major identity crisis. Because he was a well-known underground rapper and had left the underground scene to join BTS, he was heavily criticized and attacked by the hiphop community. RM wanted to bring hiphop into the k-pop industry, but was criticized for it. In the korean music industry, there's a big rift between the k-pop and k-hiphop industry - rappers in the k-pop industry are usually looked down upon by k-hiphop rappers. Many kpop rappers do not write their own lyrics and usually only learn how to rap for the aesthetic. But RM proved he's a real rapper with his superior rapping skills, vast knowledge of hiphop, and also because he always writes his own lyrics. RM concluded that he didn't need to be defined by an identity, or label, or category, or genre. He just wanted to be himself and make music authentically. He addresses this in his mixtape song Do You. Suga addresses his struggle with mental health in his mixtape song The Last (in the song, he bleeps out the suicide part on purpose). Suga, like RM, was also attacked and criticized for leaving underground rap scene to join BTS. As an underground rapper, he was very poor and often had to choose between using money for food or for public transportation. Aside from depression and suicidal thoughts, he's also struggled with social phobia and the pressures of fame. In the course of his career with BTS, he's suffered mental breakdowns, and one time he was unable to perform a concert because of a breakdown. South Korea is a very conservative society, people do not openly talk about mental health. And especially artists working in the kpop industry do not make songs about that kind of thing. So for the rappers and BTS to do that is going against the norm. They also write socio/political critical songs, which is also not the norm for artists there to do, as they risk being banned, backlisted or getting backlash from people in power

It feels different. I like that the video you used has English subtitles. I found a certain kind of isolation in grad school just increased post-MA, because fieldwork, researching, & diss. writing, and narrowing in on 1 topic, were not easily shared with other people. Teaching jobs, well, it can happen there too. But I’ve never lost interest in my chosen area (Asian Religions).

For me this song is hard I know what they say but also it is different... And they still hope and belive in this passion, then for me there is only apathy... Like I would hear fragment of my story when you started.... I was 5 year in to phd... And I should give the finished theses and defend them but then pandemia happened. I don't know it looks in another countries, but you have to at last do research for 3 year. And honestly last year maybe 2 of this 5 years I was only going throo bc I put so much work and give it some much time that I feel I have to do it to the end, and I was so close to the end. I moved to different city year before covid (my 5 year) and it was hard for me do all this research, writing, grafs and statistic, etc, I couldn't focus, I didn't have any feelings for my work, it was like robót typ of work, but when pandemia come I couldn't find any motivation, and worse it started to give me do much stress and become something that hang over my head, and all this thoughts that I have to be it was so much time and so much people my family helped me with it, but I was alone in it from collage side bc my promotor was/is airhead and care only on surface or if she can gain something, she could not talk with me half a year or year and then see me and want this and that acting like she asked last week for this. So it become so bad that I had panic attacts when I sat down to write my papers, or could breath only thinking about it. I totally lost any interest in it long ago but at this point it was more like some punishment that I choose myself. So in the end I don't do it and actually it wasn't my choice I was fighting with my self all this time, but then I got info that my collage cound give title of phd anymore in my speciality they lose it, bc my speciality was very small part of my departament, it didn't meet the requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education and lose power to do it, sorry I don't know how to say all this in english and how it looks in different countries. So yeah that happened, I honestly didn't care when I heard it, It was scary only bc I didn't know what my close ones tell about all this list that easly, but they didn't know how vad it was for me do it, but I'm soo clam now like wow, I didn't have any panic episodes last half a year, even more. Hmm I can't find job and my last 5 years go to garbage but I feel like all the waight of world was talked from my head and arms, only thing that make me sad is that people that cheered on me are little disappointed, I think more then I'm, bc I was so over it that I feld relief only and my only thoughts are like yeah it is sad but bc of my time and this is all, I don't feel any passion for it. It would be good to close it and have title and all, then forget about it then, but it is as is and I feel good... (find me good job and I feel be fully happy) hehe

With "Black Swan," BTS divulge their most harrowing shadow yet, one that any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion/ability for creating. "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Martha Graham. This quote is at the root of the sentiments inlaid in "Black Swan." Much like a dancer feels purposeless when they can no longer express themselves through dance, BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they cannot create music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death. RM sings, "If this can no longer resonate / No longer make my heart vibrate / Then this may be how I die my first death." Once again, BTS affirm that despite their countless record-breaking accolades, the wealth they've amassed, and their ever-increasing fame, they are artists. What means most to them is the art - music, visuals, dances - that they create. Also check out Persona, Ego and Shadow by the rap line RM, JHope and Suga - based on Carl Jungs psychological concepts. And Singularity by Taehyung. With reference to your sharing with us about your PhD... I sincerely hope that you can find again passion in your speciality... there are so many people that will benefit from your compassion and understanding. You said that you are the only one who has chosen to delve into that field, that is so admirable. I remember with great sadness a tansgender friend of mine that did not survive the victimisation and bullying that seem to follow her through her life. She battled for so long but could fight no longer. - I only wish she had been able to have someone like you to turn to. (Struggling with her issues she turned to drugs, was arrested, sent to a MALE prison - even though she had had the surgery, and you can imagine what happened to her in there)... Our world is so cruel, but people like yourself and BTS give me hope that all is not lost. Thank you for sharing. I will be recommending your channel highly. Not only are you absolutely adorable - but you seem to be a wonderful person too. BORAHAE 💜Looking forward to watching more BTS with you.

You should do a Map Of The Soul(MOTS): 7 album reaction. The album was inspired by Murray Stein's book - Carl Jung's Map of the Soul. Their are 20 songs in total, and BTS's previous album, Map Of The Soul: Persona, had 5 songs from that album that were included in the 20 songs from the MOTS:7 album. Their are two that weren't on it, HOME, and Mikrokosmos. Both of those should be included if you react to MOTS:7, they are amazing and follow the theme. Just saying, I really believe you will appreciate the album. *Black Swan was their first song released from the MOTS:7 album. This song made me ARMY* Fun Fact - RM (Group Leader, Main Rapper, and Songwriter/Producer) wrote about 90% of the MOTS: Persona album, and he said all but two songs were for ARMY's, I believe they were Dionysus, and Persona.

“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death. They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelganger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

I’m pretty sure these guys have not seen Black Swan the movie. It doesn’t seem like it would be something that would have been mainstream in Korea because of the LGBTQ themes and in 2010 some of these guys would have been really young. They could have seen it since then but I don’t know what platform streams that movie with Korean subtitles. Most of the guys don’t speak much English.

@@ancip485 I just said it was unlikely. I don’t always watch the vlives. No reason to get upset. What I said is still true. The movie would not have been mainstream in South Korea when it came out in 2010. It would seem as though RM did exactly as I said and watched it much later.

So, I've watched a few of your BTS reactions and... I have thoughts. :) When I saw the tag line, "Mental Health Professional Reacts," I hoped for informed analysis of the lyrical content along with some semiotics, particularly from the POV of a queer person in the field. Based on your reactions I'd watched previously, I'd have said you seemed fun, engaging & personable, but that your commentary was largely surface-level - looks, outfits, that sort of thing. I don't think that's a bad thing, just that it's a bit indistinguishable from other reactors I've watched as to substance and - dare I say - meaning. 8:20 is the point at which it turned a corner for me. First, because you paused & took the time to re-watch/listen, formulate your thoughts & acknowledge that there's more going on than just aesthetic appeal. Second, because you were willing to open up about yourself & connect your own lived experiences and expertise to what you were reacting to. To put it bluntly, I've watched plenty of people who can relate, in some way, to the messages of the song & MV, but their reactions rarely go beyond that, so I usually don't return to their channels. However, as soon as I saw that you had made the choice to really engage with the MV, I was in. There are complex dynamics underlying BTS' success that have gone largely unexamined by Western media & commentary; I think you have the potential to carve out a meaningful niche for yourself in the sea of BTS reaction & analysis. I'm really looking forward to the video on Jung + BTS that you mentioned, as well as any future reactions.

Thank you, Gorey. I appreciate the thoughtful feedback! As it is my profession, mental health always tends to pop into the conversation in my videos. Though that can be a bit more difficult in music videos. If you ever get the urge to watch one of my other reactions outside of BTS or music, you will see that I don’t shy away from difficult discussions (I recommend the series ‘Not Me’). Thanks again! Wishing you all the best! 💙
