This was Ice Cube's diss track in response to the N.W.A. track '100 miles and running' ... Ice Cube didn't say anything at his former group on his first solo album and was miffed when they dissed him. The issue w/ N.W.A. was that Eazy-E was the guy who put his money into the group and found success making his imprint Ruthless Records... In his mind, he was getting his due back for his investment once the group was successful. Jerry Heller was a manager from the 70's but his roster of artists were running dry in the 80's cos they were not making money... He saw N.W.A. as an opportunity to promote music that he felt would be as 'important as the birth of rock n roll' ... and he was right. He helped Eazy-E get Ruthless a major distribution and N.W.A. a foot in the music industry. The problem was that Jerry Heller, like most 70's (and 80's) managers, ran his business in rather unfair terms to the artists - they treated band and groups like paid employees while taking a lion's share of the profits they made... It was what turned artists against them and many bands found themselves broke because managers and labels had ripped them off... And like most managers, Heller gravitated towards Eazy-E (since he was the guy funding N.W.A. and ran the business side) and made sure that he was getting paid the most while the others were just getting a paycheck. Heller also manipulated the members of N.W.A. to keep control of the group to his advantage; another common tactic used by managers. The way Jerry Heller looked at N.W.A. was that everyone was a replaceable employee - and that was not the case... Dr. Dre and Ice Cube were the most valuable talent in the group... Heller drew up standard contracts for N.W.A. members that gave them a huge ca$h advance and they signed willingly. But Ice Cube was suspicious and discovered that the advance was a small fraction of the money N.W.A. was making ($10K for each member out of 1 Million $$$ profit was rather lop-sided) ... Ice Cube refused to sign and demanded a fair share... Eazy-E and Jerry Heller refused; he would sign the contract or he was out... Ice Cube bailed and got his own record contract and solo album out. With Ice Cube having a hit solo album, N.W.A. were seething w/ jealousy and disapproval... and that fueled the animosity. They dissed Ice Cube... so, he responded w/ 'No vaseline' on his 2nd solo album. By 1991, Dr. Dre discovered that he was not getting paid fairly for his contributions and Ice Cube was right - the contract he had signed was financially unfair... He demanded Eazy-E give him a better contract but Eazy refused. Dr. Dre stopped working and made plans to bail himself and form a new label but his contract w/ Ruthless Records was in the way.... That was when Suge Knight offered to handle his predicament - Suge allegedly went to Eazy-E and got violent w/ him to sign a contractual release for Dr. Dre... Without Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, there was no N.W.A. and by 1993, Ruthless Records was in decline as Ice Cube was a successful solo rapper and Dr. Dre launched Death Row records w/ Suge Knight and made Million$... while Eazy-E was downsizing fast. According to Eazy's wife Tomika, she discovered that as Ruthless Records was in financial decline, Jerry Heller was taking money to profit his bottom line and she claimed that Eazy-E finally let Heller go... N.W.A. talked about reconciling without Heller involved and making a 3rd album by 1995 but Eazy-E died from AIDS soon after.
