She was referring to her father in the song and the new man that she referred to in the song was her husband. They are now as of like a year ago I think divorced because he was a no good SOB, but she is healthier than ever and continues to sing like the angel she is. she has a fantastic catalog of music that you should deep dive into.

I m 52 and I am crying my eyes out. No matter how old one is, the pain that abandonment causes never goes away. I hate the word bastard, but that is what I am. Luckily, my grandpa raised, and was the one I called dad. I miss him. The biological one is alive, but couldn’t care less about me. Anyhow, I proud my last name was given by my grandpa/dad. ❤ I miss him.

She was talking about her father and she was talking about her husband that she loved very much. He ended up screwing her over too for as much as 24 mill and she just had to take him back to court to get back money. Kelly is one of the GREATEST artists of our time she can LITERALLY SING ANYTHING check out her KELLYOAKES from her talk shows. One of the best people in Hollywood and been screwed over every step of the way BUT HAS FOUGHT FOR HERSELF EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!!! I'm so glad she has Reba to lean on at least ❤

Kelly can sing ANYTHING & many artists say “guess I can’t sing that anymore bc she owns it now” after hearing her version bc they’re blown away. Aretha paid homage to her & there is a video montage on TY someone put together of her doing Aretha songs. 🔥🔥🔥 Her voice is incredible. You should also find her videos singing w/Pink. 2 under-appreciated powerhouses that hit in an indescribable way.

The saddest part is that her husband (who she wrote this song for) and her husbands father, married her and Reba to make money. They used them and continue to keep trying to do so. Kelly deserves the world. Trevor Noah made a joke that singers were afraid Kelly would sing their song because she always sings it better. He's right. She's gold.

The "you" in the song ("All I remember is your back") is referring to her dad, who left when she was six. Before Idol, she flew out to visit him and tried to rekindle a relationship, but he wasn't interested. Post Idol, which she won, he comes back...asking for money. The "he" in the song ("Piece by piece he collected me up off the ground where you abandon things") referred to her (now ex) husband. Who sadly, pulled her dad, divorced her, wiped out half of her money, blah blah. She has since changed the lyrics to this song. "I just walk away, when they ask for money." She also wrote another song that references it, and one of the lyrics is "Piece by piece, I found out my hero is me."

My grandma used to tell me that any man can be a sperm donor. Remember sperm donors always leave the cup behind. It takes a real man to be a Father. The sperm donor responsible for me left before I was 6 months old. Of course I have no memory of that. My mother remarried and when my stepfather took over, I had a REAL DAD. He never treated me like I was just a step daughter. I have pictures of him holding me and I was a tiny baby. My blood father showed up when I was 4 then again when I was 15, and when I was 27. This time he needed 50K for his wife to have surgery. And the final answer is NO I WOULD NOT GIVE YOU 50 cent. I never saw him again. My step father was my DAD, My Heart, My protector, My partner in crime, My hunting partner. My Teacher. HE WAS MY LIFE. He passed on October 2021 from COVID Pneumonia. RIP DAD LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU MUCHES💔💔💔😢😢😢

The sonic gets me the time. My dad didn’t abandon me. He actually help me from my mother back in the 60s long story. No one needs to know, but this song hits Home because he took me just despite my mom and he never gave me the love of father gives his daughter that I’ve seen in so many of my friends, etc. he told me way too many times I was not the Daughter he wanted and why can I be like the girls that I grew up with or even my cousin just always degrading and anytime he did something and he would say he was proud of me it just laid flat with me along with my stepmom abusive and I sit back and I wonder what did I do and why couldn’t I get the love unfortunately at 64 years old I still wonder I try to move on the problem having a father like that appear like that as much as you wanna break the mold wind up with that and I’ve had so many good men that I dated in the past but for some reason I didn’t stay I guess cause I didn’t know what true love was so I wind up with that wolf and sheep clothing.. but I try to stay strong for myself and my daughter, who is so much stronger than me even though her father and I are divorced. I made her your brother saw him all the time and had the relationship with him that they should and she’s her father’s world, God bless all the daughters❤❤
