This is from a 2001 interview with playboy magazine that Metallica did. "Around the time of Load, I felt I wanted to stop drinking. “Maybe I’m missing out on something. Everyone else seems so happy all the time. I want to get happy.” I’d plan my life around a hangover: “The Misfits are playing in town Friday night, so Saturday is hangover day.” I lost a lot of days in my life. Going to therapy for a year, I learned a lot about myself. There’s a lot of things that scar you when you’re growing up, you don’t know why. The song Bleeding Me is about that: I was trying to bleed out all bad, get the evil out. While I was going through therapy, I discovered some ugly stuff in there. A dark spot." - James Hetfield talking about the meaning of "Bleeding Me"

James loves to play this one live…He really puts it all out there when they do it. I feel that this song was James at his most honest lyrically. This song was about James's addictions, and how he was the source of everything that was going wrong in his life. Towards the beginning of the song he says "this thorn in my side is from the tree I planted," this monkey that I can't get off my back, I'm the one that put it there.
@ralphdougherty184410 ай бұрын
I don’t think James had ever been that honest in a song before…He didn’t really write about himself until Load. Maybe a couple of times but it was never blatant and intentional like this. This song seems so personal and perhaps that’s why I put it in my top 3 of their career. It’s beautifully written!

God, I freakin love this song! You first asked about lyric vs music video: I would say studio lyric should always be the first reaction, before music video or live. You asked second about which song I turn to: just depends on my mood. Usually I just hit a playlist with Metallica and it’s usually a song I didn’t even choose which reels me in and either gets me amped up or soothes the sorrows.

I think maybe the people will let you know of a particularly song is more about the lyrics or the video.

For this era of the band, this one and "Until It Sleeps" are the 2 best from this album. I'm unapologetically an 80s Metallica fan, but I begrudge them nothing for wanting to expand/experiment, it takes nothing away from the earlier masterworks...it's just Different. This track definitely gives off a Pink Floyd kinda vibe at times, really cool.

James' lyrics on this album are next level. The introspection and vulnerability.
@arden409 ай бұрын
The metal purists hate this album, but I think if any other band had put this album out we'd be talking about it as one of the greatest alt rock/hard rock albums of all time, which it is. But because it's Metallica and everyone loves their thrash so much more, it's slept on at best. There's no other band out there that has had their music and their playing nearly so scrutinized instead of being appreciated for what they had to give us at different times of their lives. People seem to forget that they are human too even though James has laid his soul to bare time and time again. Honestly, he's got to be a pretty strong person to continue to do that despite taking a lashing from his "fans" for it every time.

Bleeding Me is about the process of rehab therapy, “bleeding” out the bad by addressing and admitting that you are the author of your suffering. It’s likened to the process of “blood letting” in ye olden days, when doctors thought you could simply let patients bleed out infected blood and new blood would replace it, curing you of your ailment. The dark undertone of this song that nobody seems to pick up on… is that blood letting didn’t work. No matter how many times you tried it, the body was still infected. James is ultimately saying that his rehab therapy for drug abuse and alcoholism will never work, because the body is still infected.
