My view has always been that at their best, Slayer had a knack for writing songs about the dark side of humanity. Songs that deal with war, the Haulocaust, serial killers, terrorism and other topics on "the evil that men do". They neither glorify nor condemn it, but rather metaphorically stick it in your face and rub your nose in it, as if to say "You human race, you did this, you allowed this to happen."

Granted in their very early years they’d do Iron Maiden Covers before Kerry an Co. found their identity (which would be Slayer as we know them) I like to think of them as a darker, more evil Iron Maiden (reason because a lot of IM songs have a history catalysts or motivation behind their style and/or lyrics)but slayer is more so what the darkness of humanity has done to society which in my claim, they’re (Slayer Band) not evil compared to the atrocities that humanity has committed only they shed light and let people know the world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows, we have a darker side that we need to acknowledge and learn so it never happens again.

I upped the thumb on your comment, and went to listen to _Altar of Sacrifice,_ 'cause it's been a while, and the video I found was listed under the topic *Slayer* and it was great... Then the song just stopped. _Oh, that's right, this song flows right into the next one,_ I remembered. _What song comes next?_ And in the video list on the right, I see _Jesus Saves._ The shadow in my heart deepens. This is going to be another _Postmortem/Raining Blood_ hypertensor for me, isn't it? Everybody telling the reactors I follow about the one song and not the other, delivering to them only half the experience and giving me an aneurysm. Fuck. _Altar of Sacrifice/Jesus Saves_ here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHSVi5ePr5Khea8

I used to think I knew a thing or two. I thought I was a metalhead. The last few months have strained that belief. Now this. I did not know this song was about Dahmer. That's not great, but what _really_ disturbs me is that I was never curious enough about the title or lyrics of _213_ to look anything up. You've brought me knowledge, LJ. I'm less ignorant than before I'd watched this. I'm worried about the state of my mind and soul, now, yes, but finding out I've something to worry about it infinitely better than believing I'm fine. Huh. Some late night in the late 80s, I dialed in some college radio show or another that was showcasing some metal, and they announced the next song as _Reborn_ from the album _Reign in Blood_ by Slayer. I could barely handle it. I bought the cassette soon after that. My neck has been sore ever since. And apparently, my brain might be scrambled.

You can't take these kinds of lyrics too seriously... yes, '213' was about a real monster... but we all know Slayer does not condone or romanticize these horrific crimes. It's just brutal lyrics for brutal music's sake... You look at a death metal band like Cannibal Corpse, who were so controversial w/ their horror-themed lyrics (which u could barely understand because of vocalist Chris Barnes' gutteral voice)... They wrote the lyrics the same way Stephen King wrote horror novels. Chris Barnes (former Cannibal Corpse vocalist) wrote the band's most gory and violent famous tracks, like "Hammer smashed face"... "Stripped, raped and strangled"... 'A skull full of maggots'... 'Meat hook sodomy'... And yet, Chris Barnes is a pot-smoking hippie 😂 When Barnes left Cannibal Corpse in 1996, vocalist George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher took over, but it was the bassist Alex Webster and drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz who took over writing the lyrics... and they came up w/ equally brutal lyrics for Cannibal Corpse tracks that Corpsegrinder would deliver vocally on the records and in concert. Tracks like - 'Orgasm through torture'... 'Dismembered and molested'... 'Blowtorch slaughter'... 'Death walking terror'... 💀🔥 Other members of Cannibal Corpse like guitarists Rob Barrett and Jack Owen would also contribute lyrics... In their documentary 'Centuries of torment'... Alex Webster reiterated that he expected that their audience would know that the band never expects them to do the things they write in their lyrics ever... Paul Mazurkiewicz said that he wrote lyrics because he aspired to deliver that level of gory lyrics that Chris Barnes had written while he was in the band... It was challenging to keep coming up w/ ways to envision brutal violence and death, but they've kept that tradition going til today. Their vocalist George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher said that he approached delivering the lyrics w/ seriousness, but not by the content... more of the attitude and sonic attack of his gutteral vocals. Producer Jim Morris recalled tracking Corpsegrinder in the studio in 1998 and the track was called 'Dismembered and molested' by Cannibal Corpse... and he would go through the lyrics as Corpsegrinder was doing his vocals in the recording booth. Morris found the lyrics so absurd that he had to duck down so that he could start laughing without Corpsegrinder seeing him 😂 Of course, Corpsegrinder came out of the booth and saw Jim Morris laughing and recalled being asked, "How can you sing that with a straight face?" It's all taken w/ a grain of salt... nobody in death metal bands aspires to be a serial killer or murdering rapist as far as I know... I've met death metal vocalists and lyricists like Karl Sanders of Nile, Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal/ Cannibal Corpse, (the late) Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder, Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, Alex Camargo of Krisiun, Steve Asheim of Deicide... they were all very mellow, nice fellows... 😈

I had the VHS tape called 'Live Intrusion' back when stuff was still coming out on Video Tapes, and I remember how Tom Araya introduced the song: "It's time to sing you a love song. Actually it's a new Slayer song. It's about taking someone behind closed doors, ripping her legs off, and then eating her to DEATH". My opinion is that this was the PERFECT introduction to the song. Just my own personal opinion anyway. Oh, and if you want to hear another song about a Psychopath/Sociopath killer, you need to check out the song 'I, Madman' by Ancient.

You just have to love slayer, the insane lyrics, the solos that sound like the screams of insanity itself, and dave Lombardo for his drumming. The intro on this song is one of my favorites , it's unsettling, creepy and readies you for what's coming just like that long held note at the end of dead skin mask.
