Back in the 1980's bands like Slayer, Possessed, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer, Bathory and Celtic Frost influenced the evolution of Thrash Metal into more extreme territories and most important the born of Death Metal and Black Metal, the most extreme kinds of music at that time.

For something gothic/dark, "Dead Skin Mask" for aggression "Angel Of Death". For the Seasons In the Abyss album they slowed down a "bit" and got really gothic, which I love, It's one of my favorite albums of that time. The majority of Slayers music is aggressive, fast & dark, this is yet another side of "Thrash Metal" in all it's insanity. Slayer is a part of the "Big 4" along with Megadeth, Metallica & Anthrax, there were many more bands that were active & coming up but these guys were at the top & fan favorites for similar but different reasons, enjoy. 🤟🤟🤟🤟 👍💀👍

Not aggressive enough for you when the subject is Slayer is a very easy problem to solve. 😂 This song you just listened to is one of the “Let’s ease them into it first so we don’t scare them away.” songs. Haha. The entire Reign In Blood album is required listening, starting with the first track, Angel Of Death. I’d suggest a lyric video for your first listen so you actually hear the majesty of the studio recording. Live versions are great if you’ve already heard the song, but I feel the first listen should be the studio version. Since there is no official video a lyric video is the next best thing.

-This is actually my favorite album from them with this my favorite song. You picked a nice place for new listeners who might not be into metal to get into them along with South of Heaven and Divine Intervention, the album before and after this album. They’re more heavy and less thrash, which might not be someone’s thing initially. - As I stated in the “Damage Inc” reaction, the look on your face during the intro makes me think “Hell Awaits” should be on the list. -I’m sure you’ve seen a lot the same tracks(“Angel of Death”, “Raining Blood”, “War Ensemble”). Your comments about the dual solos here make me think “Dittohead” would be a good one.

What set Slayer apart from the thrash metal scene in the 80's was their affinity for hardcore punk rock fused w/ the proficiency of Judas Priest and the aggression of Venom (the band). Slayer was formed by teenagers in Huntington Beach, California in 1981. Kerry King (guitar) met Jeff Hanneman (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums) in the neighborhood and got together to play heavy metal music. Tom Araya (vocals & bass) had played w/ King in a prior project and joined Slayer... In 1982, they met Metallica in the L.A. scene and became huge fans. Around that time, Jeff Hanneman also got into S. California punk rock music and wanted to play w/ the same speed & aggression of those punk bands, and Dave Lombardo would speed up the tempos of Slayer's music to a frantic pace. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman wrote all the original music and Tom Araya would contribute some lyrics. Metal Blade Records founder Brian Slagel discovered Slayer, but lacked the finances to help them make a record. In 1983, Slayer pooled money together to record their first album 'Show no mercy' which was released late in the year by Metal Blade... they emulated Venom's image early on, but after playing w/ Exodus in San Francisco in 1984, they decided to ditch the ghoulish makeup. Despite releasing 2 EP's ('Haunting the chapel' and 'Live undead') and their 1985 album 'Hell awaits', Slayer was still struggling to find an audience... Kerry King played guitar in Megadeth's first shows in 1984. In 1986, hip hop producer Rick Rubin wanted to sign Slayer to his Def Jam label and got the band in the studio to reinvent their sound... What emerged was the iconic album 'Reign in blood' in 1986 that set a high mark in speed metal drumming and controversial lyrics about real-life horrors... Rubin and Slayer crafted 2 more albums that defined Slayer's career after 'Reign in blood'... 'South of Heaven' (1988) and 'Seasons in the Abyss' (1990)... Slayer's albums went gold (half million copies sold) in the US, and their fanbase in concert were beyond extreme and reputed to cause serious damages (even to themselves). However, the success of Slayer was soon undercut by obstacles... Dave Lombardo was increasingly frustrated in the band, and he was fired in 1992 after taking a leave of absence. Then, producer Rick Rubin was absent from the studio... Slayer hired Paul Bostaph (drums) and recorded 'Divine intervention' in 1994, but despite going gold again, Rubin's absence was felt on that record. A punk rock covers album 'Undisputed attitude' was released in 1996, and drummer John Dette filled in for the absent Paul Bostaph on tour until 1998... 'Diabolus in musica' (1998) was the next album, but did not fare well in the late 90's. A run on Ozzfest '99 helped Slayer pick up new fans and they returned to their older sound w/ the album 'God hates us all' in 2001. In 2002, Paul Bostaph left Slayer, and Dave Lombardo was welcomed back to the band on drums... The band played the entire 'Reign in blood' album in concert in 2003/ '04... The next album 'Christ illusion' finally arrived in 2006. Slayer had to take a year off after the release of the 2009 album 'World painted blood' after Tom Araya had surgery on his back... they returned to tour in 2010... Unfortunately, another tragic setback hit guitarist Jeff Hanneman who was infected w/ a flesh-eating bacteria and survived, but the damage was severe and he had to take 2011 off as Slayer kept touring w/ Exodus guitarist Gary Holt taking his spot. In 2012, a financial dispute led to Dave Lombardo leaving the band... John Dette filled in again, until Paul Bostaph came back in 2013. That same year, Jeff Hanneman passed away from liver cirrhosis at age 50. Slayer dedicated their 2015 (and final) studio album 'Repentless' to the late Jeff Hanneman w/ Gary Holt officially on guitar... In 2018, Tom Araya announced that he was retiring, and Slayer would be playing their final tours. Slayer's last show was in L.A. in 2019. So far, Kerry King has hinted that he has a new band and new music w/ Paul Bostaph on drums, and intends to release it in 2023.

This is my favorite Slayer song from my favorite Slayer album. "War Ensemble", "Skeletons of Society", "Dead Skin Mask", and "Expendable Youth" are great tunes off this album. Kerry King's solo starts it off, but I really like Jeff Hanneman's solo (blonde guitarist). The transition from his awesome tapping to the main riff is sick!!! The most "aggressive" song in terms of speed and just not giving a f**k about feelings (i.e., calling it like you see it) is probably "Angel of Death". There are some other great tunes, but that one will probably deliver on all fronts. . . . For more "don't give a f**k" attitude songs, I highly recommend "Disciple". It's relatively short, but powerful and really pi$$es people off (or it did when it came out). Of course, "Angel of Death" broke the path for that song more than a decade earlier.

Dave Lombardo is arguably the best fill drummer in metal history. He's definitely my favorite drummer of all time (save perhaps John Bonham). Slayer is weird in the sense of "aggression." Yes, they have super fast and thrashy songs but a lot of their slower tempo songs (this being one of them) hit just as heavy. This is the title track and last track on their "Seasons In The Abyss" album. Probably my favorite album by them (close 2nd would be "Hell Awaits" which is definitely more "aggressive") but most fans would probably gravitate more towards their album "Reign In Blood" which is also a metal masterpiece. I have a Slayer tattoo on my left shoulder of their cover to "Divine Intervention." That's not relevant....especially since I'm not the biggest fan of the album itself, just a badass image....but it is a testament (another band you need to check out is "Testament" btdubs) to how much I enjoy Slayer on a whole. Great start song to get into Slayer, though. Awesome reaction!
