He wrote this song shortly after his dad passed and around the same time the 9/11 attacks happened. It was a song to honor his father and also the attacks happened and he worked that into the song. This song is an anthem.

@@bethchisholm4858 Thank you. It’s not very often I hear someone that enjoyed being a dependent of a service member. I’m glad you took the opportunity to enjoy your experience. I tried to tell my daughter this years ago, that she may never have the chance to travel like this again. I understood the constant moving and making new friends every 3-4 years and tried to make it as easy as possible. She finally came around in her mid teens. She now has a son, has to do adult things and told me a few months ago she misses the change of scenery. lol

I'm a military veteran. And as I swore an oath to serve, no flag can or should ever fly higher than Old Glory. Those who intentionally disrespect the flag are disrespecting the ideals we were founded on -- not the flaws and scars we have. Things can always be better, and only by living in America do we have the opportunity to make this nation what it ought to be. Because at the end of the day, we don't have liberty, we ain't got anything worth fighting for and preserving for future generations.

I did it for my family, for my buddies, for my country (of course!), and for freedom for all of us. The current gov't sucks! The U.S. has a LOT of corruption at high level. It's disappointing and sad. BUT! There are a LOT of good people, it's a GREAT country overall, and we became the "leaders". Not so much bc we wanted to, but bc we HAD to! Toby put a lot of time spent with the troops, and believe me, we appreciated it!

I just saw an article today on our local news that makes this song just hit so different, and makes his loss that much more hard in this area. I personally grew up in Indiana and being a military brat (Army) and then myself serving (Marine Corps), I moved around some and only started calling Kansas home in 2013 when I received a job offer as soon as I EASed. Well, during the invasion of Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a US Soldier from the town we now call was captured and became a POW. Valley Center, KS is a small suburb just about 10-15 minutes north of Wichita, KS. This soldier would sing this song to the Iraqi guards to both annoy them and to keep up his own morale. This soldier would eventually make it home and as a thank you for his service and a tribute for the pain he had suffered, the entire town threw a parade for him . Unknown to the Soldier at the time, Toby Keith had heard about the story and had arranged with the town to not only show to shake his hand, but also put on a small concert for him where the Soldier sang along with Toby Keith on stage to this song. Valley Center, even with its growth today, still has a population of under 8,000 people - and back them probably closer to 5k-6k. It just blew my mind and really shows the type of people in the community but also, and very importantly, the kind of person Tony Keith was.

OEF/OIF Veteran Toby Keith will definitely be missed by many! His patriotic songs always seemed to make you feel better even if just for a little while. I can't speak for every veteran, but when I see people do reactions to patriotic songs and react at certain times and moments the way you did it shows that even though you feel one way about the government you still love this country! It was an honor to serve this country! If my body didn't give out I would still be serving!

As a Retired Marine I loved this man for everything he did for us Veterans and active duty members. As a man in his 50s fighting cancer now... there are no words to express how I truly feel about his loss. This song and a few others of his have all been anthems of sorts for me at different points in my life. This song and this performance is one that carries meaning and helps me keep fighting.

I understand how you're feeling. I come from a family of soldiers with pride and love for this country. Several years ago I just beamed with that proud Patriotic feeling and the last several years I have been so disgusted and embarrassed. I miss that feeling and this song just brings that amazing feeling right back. Toby Keith made this world a better place.

Toby was hands down the most patriotic celebrity in America and the biggest supporter of the men and women in uniform and we all loved him for it as well. You should try "I love this bar" that was my favorite song of his.
