something interesting that luke roberts (james’ actor) revealed in an interview is that, at the start of the game, in the bathroom, james is having a ptsd episode. when he looks up and sees himself in the mirror and touches his face, he immediately forgets why he’s there and what’s happened to mary. silent hill then creates all of the monsters based on his psyche, and also creates the story in his mind on why he is there

@hidefiance it tells you it indirectly, the repetition of the shaking hand at the start vs when he next kills again. It doesn't tell you he's killed mary until the end, the whole point is he's forgotten until the video tape section in the hotel. Its not a revelation hes having an episode and forgotten. Its literally a plot point. Im here looking for my wife who ive forgotten ive killed. Silent hills power begins to loosen as soon as he's seen what he's done and he's confronting what he's done for the first time (the dying monsters after he's watched the tape). PTSD specifically being the reasoning is likely also a direction he received on how to play the scene. Because it's infinitely debateable how much of what's happening is james and how much is the place of silent hill. Is james forgetting because he's mentally ill, is silent hill making him forget, is james just forgetting from entering this other fog world of silent hill. We don't know. The answers probably a combo of everything.

it's so insane to me how realistically they tackled the psychological aspect of being in a position you don't want to be in and having to become a person you have no choice but to be, and hate forever. being in a similar situation before (i didn't kill anybody), forgetting things is so real. like you've said before, the mind will go through extended lengths to try and save you when you're in a position you don't want to be in (this does not justify james' actions). having to have lived with someone i loved myself who started to change so suddenly in a way i couldn't catch up to, i felt the same way as james. in a way, you really do start to recognize and remember them by the way you've last felt them being themselves and not the version of them that was changed by whatever disease has taken over (exactly why james made himself believe mary had died 3 years ago). for my case, it was dimentia and the person i once loved was so far from what they used to be that i wanted out, too. much like what he said, i felt like i had my life taken away from me by this someone i didn't even know. having to spend countless of hours with them, being restricted of the things you used to be able to do. your brain starts to put you in survival mode, you're put in a position where you believe it'll be like that forever, but in the end, when you do get what you want and they're gone and have nothing left of them to see, not their shadow, not their favorite food on their table. the only thing left to remember by then is how you'll have to live with yourself, in a perpetual state of hate and regret.

As someone who saw his wife crumble away from illness over 2 years, I can relate to what both James and Mary went through (she's doing better now after a long recovery, but still struggles). Both people are victims of the disease, and no one can understand what affect that has on a caretaker and their spouse unless they go through it. It can break one down in ways we never thought possible... just like you describe. Everyone thinks of the person dying, but there is rarely a thought or support given to those closest to them who suffer the entire time as well, but also have to live with it afterward.

@TerryRed i never really saw myself as one, everyone in my family made me believe i was sick in the head for hating someone who was already suffering. mine was my grandmother who raised me since i didn't have both of my parents. not only was i given the responsibility of taking care of her 24/7, she also became violent and abused me both physically and mentally. shit really gets you considering the unthinkable. she's gone now but my entire teenage years are gone and my family, her children who were supposed to take care of her, all blame me for treating her the way i did then and i still do too.

Congratulations, of all the channels I saw discovering the game thanks to the remake, you were the one who best captured the subtext and unraveled the mysteries of the plot. The remake expanded the areas, greatly improved the combat and boss fights, but the text is practically the same as the original, some lines are the same letter for letter, but now with graphic power to make more use of facial expressions.

By the end of the game all the monsters will stop attacking James because he can't run from the truth anymore, even Pyramid Head will kill himself. But Maria isn't like them because she's a special case, even though she's a manifestation she is still sentient and has her own goals, if James leaves she will cease to exist, she's a very tragic character just like the others.

15:30 This remake is amazing. They expanded areas, added new ones, and reworked the puzzles, but the dialogue... They kept most of dialogue intact, only reworking or adding dialogue for clarity. For example, they gave Eddie and Angela extra lines to hint at their situations and to ground them as real people, not constructs of the town. They also didn't change the major story beats. I remember in the original seeing that video where it's revealed what James did to Mary, and the remake hit all those button all over again. In that moment Laura is the perfect stand in for the player.

The different endings are worth looking into as well as the triggers for them. It’s a very well done system and I think you’ll appreciate the directions they take based on what led to them. The serious ones anyway lol The way I think of this vs the OG is when you listen to a cover of a really classic song and seeing all the inspiration and how talent and love can elevate what is already one of the best stories I’ve ever seen in any media. The story deserved to be retold and I feel the gameplay and VA will allow it be experienced for much longer than what the OG’s aging bones could’ve. Amazing playthrough. One of your best I’ve seen. Thank you so much

I just LOVED watching you play this! Seeing you get blown away like we did 23 years ago, and seeing you feel the same emotions! You are very smart, and it was a joy seeing you try to carefully think things through and piece it together from multiple points of view. This game really is an amazing mind trip. When I played it 22 years ago it changed my life, and how I saw what video games and storytelling could be. Nothing else like it had come before it. As someone who saw his wife crumble away from illness over 2 years, I can relate to what both James and Mary went through (she's doing better now after a long recovery). Both people are victims of the disease, and no one can understand what affect that has on a caretaker and their spouse unless they go through it. It can break one down in ways we never thought possible. Mary didn't die 3 years ago. The disease killed the "person" that Mary was 3 years ago when she first got the disease (in James eyes / mind). She was most likely killed very recently based on other indicators. You also are shown this when Maria was found dead the 2nd time in the hospital bed, when you see her with the start of the same disease that Mary had (she wasn't killed by anyone). There are so many visual cues throughout the game to see. You see the home James and Mary lived in (and the bedroom Mary was killed in) being shown over and over in the Apartment buildings (where you found her hanky where PH mimicked similar acts in the apartment), the Labyrinth, etc. You can also hear Mary's "gasp" from the videotape at different important parts of the game. The monsters are visual representations of Mary and her sickness as well as James sexual frustrations (lying figures throwing up, all monsters having feminine / sexual tones). The locations changing to represent memories of both James and Mary's own otherworld hell (the hospital covered in dirty sheets, the rot, etc). There is a freshly dug (and open) grave in the graveyard on the first play in Silent Hill at the start. All the bodies in Silent Hill are James, alluding to the possibility that he is stuck in some sort of loop and he kept failing until you clear the game. The "memories" from the first game add a nice emphasis to this idea while also being nice easter eggs for players of the original. It also explains why the game and puzzles are somewhat jumbled and different than the original (while allowing the game to be fresh and new for all players). Angela's Abstract Daddy sequence was absolutely nightmarish in the remake compared to the original (the new 1.06 update that just came out adds in a "breathing wall" effect which is VERY creepy). If you watch the burning stairs scene with her (makes me bawl every time), you will see "Daddy" (and most likely her brother) is now on the wall in a frame similar to the Abstract Daddy monster... only now he's been slit down the middle (including his "stuff" now being gone). It's also been thought that Angela was actually looking for her (awful) mother to finish her off as well ("you're the only one left, maybe then I can finally rest"). The last Save point with 9 squares... if you look at James face... he now can't look straight. He only looks to the side and can't bring himself to look at us anymore! You aren't meant to like / agree with James actions. I don't think he was "evil" (he did truly love Mary), as he was conflicted between her saying she wanted the pain to end for years and him being affected for 3 years of his own suffering from slowly losing her (over 3 years) combined with his own guilt of resentment towards her for what happened to them, etc. Its ok to have empathy for the horrible situation he and Mary were both put in, as the disease made them each a victim and a "monster" in their own way... and its a tragic story all round. It's meant to make you think in ways you never did before... and its a special experience you'll never forget. Welcome to the fandom!

Angela’s brother was also abusing her. And the ending as she ascends the stairs is to symbolize her dying and going to heaven. Truly tragic stuff. That why this games been a masterpiece for 23 years. 11:21 I know the comics aren't super popular, but they do explain an important thing. People drawn to Silent Hill have one of three outcomes. One: After being forced to confront the darkest parts of themselves, they rise above it and find redemption. (generally, the games' plotline) Two: They simply can't handle it and are unalived by things spawned from their own mind. Or, very rarely, three: The person accepts what they've done, but choose to forsake normal reality because they think they're too monstrous. They essentially become part of Silent Hill itself and live out their lives in their own little pocket dimension. (one of the comic series go this route)

Both the remake and the original are pretty close in story beats. The remake adds two new endings and expands the puzzles/areas that you go through in the game. As far as the cutscenes go, the dialogue is pretty close to the original but its moved around to make more sense. Really though, the acting is far, far better in the remake than the original, which wasn't great, but the content was there. As far as the series goes. the original Silent Hill and Silent hill 3 are connected story wise. The rest of the games, SH4, SH Homecoming, SH Shattered Memories, and SH Downpour are all stand-alone games, much like 2. However, Silent Hill 1-4 are the only games made by the Japanese teams and the rest are different developers. The quality is all over the place but most fans consider 1-3 to be the best. Glad you liked the game and thanks for the playthrough! Subbed.

When choosing the rotten apple/rusty egg or fresh apple/scarlet egg, to me it felt like I was choosing between diseased Mary or Maria. I also enjoyed the coin puzzle. Who is to blame for the women’s death. The man, the woman or the snake. This felt synonymous with who is responsible for Mary’s death. Was it James, Mary or the disease itself. In each, there were no right or wrong answers but different endings become more likely based on choices the player makes throughout the game.

Someone said in a comment that Angela is looking for her "Mama" to kill her and not to be comforted by her as people would assume. She says at the end " Mama, I was looking for you ! You're the only one left ! Maybe then I can finally rest." Knowing her mother said she deserved what happened to her, I think it's quite possible that she is actually trying to kill her mother hoping her trauma would end doing so. Someone also said in the comments that Angela's brother was run over by a car, I wonder if she did it too.

I always found it fascinating how all the creatures were different manifestations of James's psyche. You don't often see Cyn get emotional over a game, but that just shows how well it's made. I have played the original and the Remake is a worthy successor. I also like that you get more endings in the remake based on your choices. The original will always be special because I assumed it was a simple survival horror game, I wasn't expecting or ready for the emotional impact it caused.

You can only get 3 endings in the first playthrough and which one you get is determined by your behavior: how much time you spend with Maria, how often you look at Mary's photo, how long you run around in pain instead of healing, how many dead enemies you stomp,... In New Game+, you can get 5 more endings (2 of them are new in the remake) by finding secret items and using them in the correct places. It's worth checking all of them out - Leave is the optimal ending to get on the first playthrough because the dialogue with Mary is extremely important, but the other endings are much more interesting.

AAAAAAHH It was so entertaining and glad to watch you go through this story! SH2 is such a classic but it's always great that new people always get to experience why it defined an era and inspired hundreds of games after it! I always admire your emotional knowledge, since episode 1 of your playthrough you called out some stuff nail in the head and even made comments that made me "oop" cause it was like a "subtle foreshadowing" moment it was so funny. Honestly, I understand the confliction to your conclusion about James. Everybody goes through it! Like, wow a husband killed his dying wife how original BUT going through the story, you understand the nuance of James' story despite it being easy to just push him to the "You are a evil person bye" category. Such as in real life nothing is white and black! That going through something traumatic; dying and bitter wife (it was implied in the old version but it was almost akin to verbal abuse how Mary lashed out but cant really confirm), the disease and how it was eating her away. Then how events like these in alter your life so big, it takes all your will power. It was a push comes to shove moment that sadly happens to even to the best people. It shows you how a person, who is generally good in all what matters, can do something heinous in a moment. So James' is judge for what he has done but also given respite for who he is in overall. Anyway, so happy to see everyone in the finish line! We got here! And its so goooood!

RE: Angela, Eddie and James. I feel they all there to be a part of a single scale. Angela is on one end, you just can't really blame her. Eddie is a victim too, but ultimately he's also a psycho. James is exactly in the middle, on the knife edge and the question isn't "hey, is he guilty?" because he is, he definitely did a bad thing, but the question is "can he be forgiven?"

Simply put, having played the original and how the remake stacks up, it's the best remake in how it captures all the essential parts of the original and expands on those. It's not a replacement, it's a kind of sequel or another take, a more grounded one because with the graphics of today facial expressions and subtleties can tell more than back then when they had to overdo it a little with voice acting, that worked for the original.

Great playthrough. I think Angela's probably going off to face her suicide, if anything. Also, the commonly accepted theory is that Mary got the disease three years ago, and it's like a symbolic death from James' perspective. The other Silent Hill games are nowhere near this level, in my opinion, but I dunno, could still be worth it if you're curious. Story-wise, the original is pretty much beat for beat the same, except with differences in hidden nuances/phrasing, less bloated gameplay/pacing, and "bad voice acting" that was originally argued as a deliberate unsettling David-Lynch-esque creative choice (in reality, it's probably more of a "make the best out of what you have to work with" thing, though, where the standards of voice acting in videogames just weren't very high at the time, so you might as well lean into it). It's much more representative of the source material than something like Remake/Rebirth is of Final Fantasy VII. Which also makes giving it Game of the Year a little trickier.

You know me as a Resident Evil fan, but Silent Hill was my first love.. way back in the mid 90s haha. I was so dubious about this remake, with Bloobers not exactly stellar record handling mental health issues in games. But they pulled it off, they handled it so well. The ONLY thing I would change is the enemy quantity. In the original, theyre much more sparse and it really lets the tension and atmosphere build, the fear of running in to one is intense. But in this theyre EVERYWHERE and you dont get a chance to really soak in the atmosphere cause youre fighting. Thats my only gripe. Otherwise, they nailed it.. and the actors performaces are perfection. This is a rough story, that deals with things that are taboo and uncomfortable but dont bask in it. Don't milk it. It's a story that treats it's subjects like they're made of breakable glass.. and as a CSA survivor myself, Angela's story is probably the best portrayal of that kind of mental anguish I've ever seen. I'm so glad you got to play it and that so many people are going to discover the Silent Hill world through this remake/re-awakening of the series. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

He didn't do it because he hated her. He just told himself that because it made the task easier to do. In truth, he did it because she was in horrible pain and was never going to get better, only worse, and he loved her. No slow lingering painful end, no... free. NOW. of the pain she was in, all at once. Because he loved her enough to set her free. It's why the guilt tormented him so. He loved her that much, and doing that broke him inside BECAUSE he loved her that much. How could he say he loved her, ever, if he could do something like THAT to her? No, he had to, HAD TO, have hated her. He couldn't have loved her. Because THAT is not a thing someone who loves you should do. Silent Hill made him confront the truth, in all its ways, ugly and beautiful. He had to face his demons there. because that is what Silent Hill is, and always was, even BEFORE there was a town. He had to first face that he did it at all... a fact he was denying. He then had to face WHY he did it. And then he had to understand, and be at peace. That is how you get to LEAVE Silent Hill. When you have made peace with yourself, when you have faced your demons and understood them. Eddie refused to face his demons, and blamed all others for them, not himself. He refused to even acknowledge they were HIS demons and learn anything until he lost it and went violent. Angela likewise, she just HID from them instead of confronting them, endlessly seeking someone to protect her from them instead of protecting herself. She continued on, endlessly seeking rescue instead of saving herself. And so she was lost. James alone faced his demons. James alone accepted them as HIS demons. And James alone overcame them.

Had to rewatch your last episode of this series after watching some other.. interesting ones lol I think Silent Hill 2’s ending is the game holding up a mirror to the player hence why certain actions like keeping James as healthy as possible through the last fights and giving time to listen to Mary’s whole dialogue in the hallway becomes reflective in how you view James’ journey. The player, in how they treat James, becomes a part of Silent Hill and how it judges James. Players who think James deserves some closure can get it. People who think he should be stuck in a loop can get it and so on. As a nurse who works for an oncology unit, illness and grief is extremely nuanced and life is rarely so pretty and clean. I can’t support nor condemn James’ actions given what little glimpse we see of Mary and his circumstances. But I can definitely understand that it’s not always so simple. I am so glad they remade this game so fans new and old can keep obsessing for many more years yet lol and also so glad you got to experience this blind and gave us one of the best playthroughs of it. Will revisit again someday for sure!

The other silent hills have little to do with psychological horror like this They deal with the occult mostly There is Homecoming and Downpour that are more psychological but those are two of the worst by the fans accord

The original Silent Hill actually does have much to do with psychological horror. The nightmare version of the town in that game just isn't the protagonists nightmare.

Silent Hill 1/2/3/4 are all 10/10 games.. 4 is something extremely unique, and looking back it's also a masterpiece.. But 2 is clearly the GOAT. As a teenager this game was just HOLY SHIT HORROR SCARY.. But replaying it in my 20s, its so much more. This era of early 2000s games was imo the start of taking this medium seriously is an amazing way to tell an emotional story. I just wish this series continued in Japan, when it was given to US studios they butchered it every time. I'd love a remake of 1 or 3.

It is not a happy ending. But it is the happiest ending possible for James. I think James killed Mary to end her pain, ultimately. But he could not get away from the fact that part of the reason he did it was for selfish and ugly reasons. In the end he finally confesses to that truth, but ignoring in his self hatred that was not the whole truth. As Mary says "If that was true, why do you look so sad?" The fact that any part of himself killed Mary for selfish reasons is something that I doubt he will ever really get over, but I'm happy he'll try to live on. I hope he and Laura can find some small happiness. If it is not clear "Leave" is my preferred ending.

the main other games worth playing are 1-4. 1 is probably the roughest around the edges, so if you would just wanna watch a video that goes over it you could do that too - but it's required for 3 , cuz 3 is a sequel to 1. 4 is kinda a different game, but still good, but like 2 where it's very standalone besides just background lore mainly.

Oh and as for the endings they are all dependant on whether or not James passes his "session" or not in Silent hill. With the exception of the infamously hilariously joke ending......woof. You managed to get the BEST session cleared ending. And there are only two ways to pass the session. But the rest are failures and im sure you can guess what one of the failures to the session is.

It’s a great remake. Pretty faithful. I do think the original Mary/Maria VA is better. I think she’s more emotional in her delivery. I prefer her OG cell scene, her OG letter read during the ending, and I also prefer her hallway dialogue. Having said all that, I think the VA is better overall in this game and they cleaned up some weird/awkward lines. I think the Chase sequence is undeniably worse in the remake, including the cinematic of Maria being stabbed. I think the boss fights are undeniably better in the remake. I like most of what Bloober added as far as new areas and stuff, but the game is probably 2-4 hours longer than it really needs to be, and I see some complaints about pacing because of that. Again, I love the remake. I think games like SH2 are why remakes need made. So many people would never go back and play the old game and now you get to enjoy the old story with a new coat of paint. Edit: I dislike that this game is up for best narrative at The Game Awards. Team Silent wrote this story in 2001 or whatever. Bloober did not change anything substantial. I love the narrative, it’s my favorite SH game. Bloober just didn’t make it (the narrative). I think they should be eligible for every other category and should win sound design.

The OG Mary VA was drawing on something heavily personal to do her scenes. I don't think anyone could have improved on that. But everyone else is so vastly improved that the result is so much better overall.
@TerryRed

If this game won for best narrative... that's also a win for Team Silent (who's also included in the credits for the remake). I don't think anyone is going to look at it like it was all Bloober's original creation. The award is geared towards "the game". No matter who's name is mentioned... its a win for the original game also, and it's creators.

@ If you’re gonna do that, have Team Silent come out on stage instead of Bloober for this particular award.
@TerryRed
@TerryRed Ай бұрын
@@marwynthemasterful6369 I can guarantee you that if they even had anyone come on stage (they usually don't at those awards... its just Geoff yapping)... Bloober would be the first to want to have TS members come out (if they could even get them to respond, etc)... and I guarantee you Bloober would mention TS and give thanks to them for their creation.... just like they gave thanks when the Director of the original SH2 game praised the remake.

@TerryRed I think best narrative usually gets a speaker but yeah, Geoff blows through a lot of shit. I think he should drop about 5 categories and some ads, and give more time for everyone else to speak. I don’t think most ppl care about the E-sports awards, for example, and these are awards he always glosses over. Content creator of the year sometimes speaks (like Ironmouse). I hate that Best Music is usually in the pre-show. I feel like music is so important.

My advice is you better wait for future silent hill games that will lean more on the psychological aspect insted of you playing the old games. While in my opinion this is the best horror series in videogames, it is just not for everyone. SH2 is an anomaly. Most streamers that experience silent hill for the first time with sh2 remake, have not really liked the other games. They could be a little bit outdated for newer generations, and the stories are nothing like sh2.
