This song is a Simon and Garfunkel classic. Written and performed by them originally. Johns version is brilliant as is Elvis's.

When John covers a song he always makes it his own. Yes it was a TV show. Yes it was Live. This man sings the shit out of this song like no o e else can do. I don't know how you found John either. But I'm so glad you did. You give the most sincere reactions to John and the Farnsey Army just lives that. Can't wait to see your Elvis reaction now. Don't try and compare them their styles are so different. Baritone v Tenor. Both sing from their souls and are kings ❤❤

I think this was an appearance on the Don Lane Show. He was a regular on that show. It was just before he joined the Little River Band. John singing Reminising and We Two when he was lead singer. This song was originally sung by Simon and Garfunkel. It is worth a listen to them too. Their version is awesome too. Love John and everything he does.

Thank you for your genuine and heart felt reaction CV. I have listened to the covers by John & Elvis, and have thoroughly enjoyed both. It's not surprising as I grew up with John's music, but also Elvis (my Mum loved playing Elvis records - love you Mum RIP 💕). IMO it is unfair to compare them as John was much younger/yet to fully develop his style & reach his peak, Elvis was a true gospel singer from the South, John is a tenor and Elvis I believe was a baritone (please correct me if I'm wrong). One thing I do feel they have in common is the emotion when they perform, not to mention their presence and natural charisma - truly beautiful! To conclude I believe what Elvis is to the United States, John Farnham is to Australia - both one of a kind, never to be replaced in our hearts 💕💕🌝

Great reaction as always. Your genuine love of John is very evident. The thing with John Farnham is there are just so many amazing performances in so many different genres and over so many eras. I think most people will recommend his most popular stuff from the mid 80’s-early 90’s, but there is so much other gold out there where he has sprinkled his magic that is less known. From the early clips on late night tv, to the LRB performances. One of my favourites is a very stripped back version of You’re the Voice that has very low views. It’s mind blowing that so few people have seen that amazing performance! PS I didn’t even know about Thunder in Your Heart until you spoke about it and reacted to it, and I’ve trawled through to the bottom of KZbin looking for rare clips of his!

I came here after watching the Elvis version, to be honest I never heard of John Farnam he has got a voice and i will be looking up more of his songs...that said, I do like Elvis' version best even more than Simon and Garfunkel who wrote it! I love their version too, its beautiful but man when Elvis sings it he's singing it from experience and like he's talking to you like an older brother or how an older brother should be, giving you solace telling you" I know, what you've been through, I see you and I'm here for you " while wrapping you in his voice like a warm hug!! ❤️

You like Elvis best because you know him and thats what you like. John Farnham fans obviously think differently. It really is unfair to compare them because they are totally different types of singers, its like comparing apples and oranges.

@TheBrownlj I wasn't comparing or saying John Farnam sucks or anything. He's a beautiful singer just stating in my opinion why I like Elvis's version best it touched my heart and soul and brought me out of a greif funk I was in! You obviously like John's version best and it ouched you the same way Elvis's version toiched me and that's okay. I don't feel slighted or find it unfair! Different versions hit people differently, and thats okay to like and have opinions on the version you like best I find it fun to analyze songs on how they affect you it's not a diss on artists or people's tastes that's how I feel any way!

Simon and Garfunkel wrote it and performed it. They did it really well and that is the version I grew up to. I love Elvis and I adore John. They both make it their own but John always takes a song as far as he can. Yes, it would have been TV for John to wear a suit again after his first manager made him wear them with really high necked collars and a tie. He found the picture of what he wanted John to look like on a Scotch bottle. He was a fool and he almost destroyed John’s life and career.

Tragic management for John was nearly seeing him give it all away.

A heart starter on the way to the gym "This Time I'm Playing to Win" which he also wrote is motivational, for gospel - Amazing Grace which he sings dripping in sweat after a concert with 2 of his backing singer friends of a few decades. Angels about love &.....Angels, with Lisa, another backing singer & decades long friend. Duet about forbidden love in his 50's with Olivia Newton-John "Please Don't Ask Me", light opera "Grenada" with Anthony Warlow, My Yiddish Mama with Tom Jones on Hey hey It's Saturday where Tom Jones seems to get a shock that John knows the song let alone hearing his voice. One of my favourites, the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar as Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane 1992 last night in Sydney. I saw it twice that week though originally saw it in 1972, then 1978 in London then 3 times in 1992 and have always had different recordings since 1972. Some of his concerts for our troops are brilliant for the joy evident when our soldiers know the words & sing along. Whispering Jack, the album that the Melbourne concert is extracted from is the highest selling Australian album in Aust. history & went Platinum x 24. We love our Farnsey, for the kind & honest man, as well as the sublime singer.

You should do a reaction to “Thunder in your heart” I believe it was a song of an American movie soundtrack. He also did songs in another American movie soundtrack (Rad and Savage streets 80’s movies), but not bad from memory. Elvis did do this song awesomely, but Elvis had a endless budget, John didn’t but yet John singing this is epic, so much versatility in his voice, so much feeling and passion, and breath and mic control, this was just epic. For me John wins but Elvis very close second. John has so much more, have a look at “let me out” by John.

Critics say Elvis Presley was the greatest artist that didn’t aways write his own songs , well in Australia it’s John Farnham. Don’t get me wrong both was capable of writing great songs but it was only on a casual basis both artist was kept so busy they didn’t have any chance to artistically evolve . So many covers rearrangements interpretations was thing . Originally a Simon & Garfunkel song it was the biggest hit worldwide in 1970 . Written by Paul Simon . This television performance recording was probably on the Don Lane Show a variety television show in Australia . This was 1979 when John was still in limbo he was just doing television appearances to get some money to stay in the public eye . At this stage John record company dump him he didn’t have a recording deal he was only 30 but critics and the industry regarded John as washed up and unbankable . The following year John gained Glenn Wheatley hit manager of the Little River Band took control of his career and John’s luck credibility within the industry to be taken seriously started to come his way .

@@Saan42 I am a fan of BOTH. Elvius does this song better to my ears. It's as simple as that. Both have LEGENDARY vocal ranges. Farhham sounds like JOHN DENVER to me as he vocalizes this number. I'd rather hear JOHN DENVER sing it. And even if he did, I'd chose the BARITONE and the GRIT of Elvis Presley for this song. Even John tried to do it like Elvis did by highlighting the piano in between the vocal runs. But it's that GOLDEN BARITONE MID SECTION that Presley is SO rich at delivering that brings home the song for me. Elvis builds the song better. I agree with @texasgirl6000 -- John, lacking ANY mid section, just belts out high note after high note. If I wanted to hear that, I'd was America's Got Talent.

@@depper You still haven't addressed your ludicrous "classically trained virtuoso" comment. Again, I don't believe you're a fan of John's, because any fan of his would know he's not classically trained. I mean, I get it, he is just that good that if you knew nothing about him you might think he was classically trained, but anyone who was a fan would know he's not. Especially someone who claimed to be a HUGE fan and know "all about" him. It's also interesting that you think this song needs a baritone, I guess the writers of the song would disagree, since Art Garfunkel is a tenor.

Naah, I like both versions. Farnham sings it a few octaves higher than Elvis but with a MUCH THINNER voice. Elvis provides the wide baritone space that this song needs to connect with the audience. I feel like Im listening to John Denver here. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing, its just nowhere close to the vibe from Elvis' live versions, which is OBVIOUSLY the framework that John used here to perform this song.

@@depper so you are trying to convice me, a John Farnham fan that Elvis's version is better. Seriously go away, you are completely WRONG. Farnham's version is so much better than Elvis's. 1stly Farnham has a much better voice with a far better range and 2ndly he is NOTHING like John Denver at all and 3rdly if you knew anything about him at all you would know that he always sings things his way and dosent try to match anyone else's vibe ever. You seriously need to get your hearing checked. Oh and by the way I never asked for your opinion and I Dont care. So you are an Elvis fan and think nobody else matches him, well good for you some of us dont share your opinion. Looking forward to you reacting to the Elvis version. This Farnham rendition is ok but, for me, Elvis' rendition rings somehow more .... hmm.... what's the word I'm feeling? More genuinely sincere, I guess is what I'm trying to say. I feel like Farnham is more concerned with impressing me with his remarkable vocal gymnastics than he is with causing me to believe in the sincerity of the words he's singing and how he honestly will be my bridge over troubled water if I'm in need. When Farnham sings it, I'm impressed with his vocal chops and I think he's impressed with his vocal chops, too. When Elvis sings it, I believe what he's singing. If a performer can technically sing the living daylights out of a song, that's great and I appreciate his technical skill. But if the message of the song doesn't reach me at the heart/soul/sincerity level then it's probably not going find a spot on my play list.

You're probably the only person I've ever seen say that they think John is more interested in showing off than expressing genuine emotion when he's singing. Each to their own, but he's pretty renowned in general for being a humble, down-to-earth, and generous person that shares the spotlight and always gives others their time to shine on stage. You won't find a single person who's worked or performed with him in 50 years who says he has a big ego - funnily enough, they all go out of their way to say the exact opposite. Interesting how people can get such different feelings from the same performance.

@@Saan42100% agree. John is known to be so humble. He hates to watch himself sing...and to this day he still doesn't understand what people see in him. He just lives to sing. I see his heart on his sleeve everytime he sings. But no disrespect to Elvis I think he also sings pure and from the heart.

@@devi_- Haha! Yeah, that's the thing about music and all the arts. Emotional responses to any kind of a work of art are always subjective. Responses can be objective but only in terms of technical aspects. In other words it's possible to have an appreciation for a particular work of art (whether its music, painting, sculpture, dance, etc.) and still not like it or enjoy it at all on an emotional level. For example, I have a sincere appreciation for rap music in terms of the skills to write it and perform it but, honestly, I can't stand listening to it.

@@westy4973 I'm a HUGE John Farnham fan, he's like the Rock and Roll John Denver - INCREDIBLE VOICE. John is using Elvis' cadence here. He was heavily influenced by Elvis. Richard Marx told the story of when he first heard John Farnham's 'You're The Voice', likening it to the first time he saw Elvis Presley on television. But John would tell you that Elvis could reach every note that John could, but John COULD NOT do what Elvis could do. Elvis RULED in the baritone space, and Elvis could glide up to tenor or even higher with simplicity. Elvis' connection to his audience was unmatched. Elvis completely dominates this song. Farnham is belting here and it sounds great... but changes the song meaning and loses all of its emotion to me. There is no mid-section and that hurts the storytelling for me.
